totony··on IRS will look into setting up a free e-filing system
It isn't. Most people only pay tax on their income, which is already sent to the IRS. Just pre-file it and ask the payee to approve it. If you have more complicated taxes, you can just decline the pre-filed and file your own, like you already do.
totony··on San Francisco decriminalizes psychedelics
ketamine also has been shown to cause brain damage in addicts afaik.
totony··on IRS will look into setting up a free e-filing system
For most people, you won't have these issues. For those that do, what difference does it make to fix it vs making it all on their own?
totony··on The future of cryptocurrency is at stake in Ethereum’s switch
You can buy GPUs/ASICs with $, so can you buy coins with $. PoS is as "open" as PoW, except the means of exchange is different. For PoW, you convert electricity (capital) into coins, whereas PoS you convert money (capital) into coins.
totony··on Kiwi Farms has been removed from the Internet Archive
So, twitter? /s

What's the rationale in accepting Twitter stay online but not this website? Plenty of harassment goes on there as well.

totony··on Microbiome-driven effects of non-nutritive sweeteners on human glucose tolerance
Organic and inorganic molecules are way different. Most small changes to organic molecules are somewhat predictable as to their outcome, afaik.
totony··on YouTube joins Facebook in banning Andrew Tate
Monopoly and antitrust laws have yet to be enforced for tech giants, but that doesn't make it right.
totony··on Investors bought a quarter of US homes sold last year
You are acting like owning a home entitles you to dictate how other people get to live. It does not. Owning a home shouldn't allow you to dictate that someone cannot build a home near you. Unfortunately it does in some places, but this is fixable.
totony··on The existence of the 50-year mortgage shows lenders are desperate
Credit being normalized increases demand which increases prices, which forces people to take a loan (ad infinitum, one of the reasons real estate is always in a bubble)
totony··on Serving Netflix Video Traffic at 800Gb/s and Beyond [pdf]
I see netflix has an office in Toronto, but the jobs are "remote, US". Any idea if remote is also an option for canadians?
totony··on Skin exposure to UVB light induces a skin-brain-gonad axis and sexual behavior
"The questionnaire we used measured romantic passion, rather than physiological/sexual passion, due to institutional review board (IRB) ethical concerns regarding sensitive sexually oriented questions."

Curious about this. I understand ethical boards for psychological blind studies and such, but for questionaires?

totony··on Former Coinbase PM charged in cryptocurrency insider trading tipping scheme
Unless it has changed, that's not true. Monero obfuscate but does not hide (unlike zcash?)
totony··on Rogers letter to CRTC on cause of Canada-wide service outage of July 2022
Very light on details. The cause is discussed for 1 paragraph and then it's "Rogers understands... will work on..."
totony··on CEO and COO of Mindgeek (Pornhub, Youporn, redtube) resign
I worked there and met Feras and only have good memories of the place. It's a very difficult industry to be in and it sucks that fair criticism gets mixed with a hate train.

Feras himself seemed very motivated to make the company and industry bigger. He was a very motivated guy and I look forward to see what he'll do next.

totony··on Kickstarter Union voted 97.6% to ratify one of the first tech union contracts
But aren't those low-paid, high skill jobs likely to be unionized? Only issue I see with that term is that union affects pay.
totony··on Kickstarter Union voted 97.6% to ratify one of the first tech union contracts
Skill is a proxy for supply whereas pay is a proxy of supply-demand. It might actually be a better term, since even if you do very skilled labor, you would prefer an union if there was no demand.
totony··on Kickstarter Union voted 97.6% to ratify one of the first tech union contracts
Do you have a better term for it?
totony··on Tesla to Cut 10% of Jobs
If you accept an offer letter, wouldn't that be a tacit contract?
totony··on We reduced 502 errors by caring about PID 1 in Kubernetes
A pod can be unready but still live, which is what should happen if its a temporary failure.
totony··on Disinformation Is a Threat to Our Democracy
Disinformation is not. A lack of critical thinking is though.
totony··on Ask HN: Advice for a New Technical Lead
Make responsibilities clear as soon as you enter a project. The closer you get to management the more overlap between responsibilities there are (e.g. you don't want to redo what the PO or the architect are doing).

Also there is a difference between tech and team lead. Team lead is more about mentoring and project management whereas tech lead is more about ownership of the tech afaik.

totony··on Modern Python Performance Considerations
>Instead of performance, I’d like to see more effort in portability, package management, and stability for Python because, essentially since it is often enterprise managed, juggling fifteen versions of Python where 3.8.x supports native collection typing annotations but we use 3.7.x, etc. is my biggest complaint. Also up there is pip and just the general mess of dependencies and lack of a lock file. Performance doesn’t even make the list.

I have been leading a Python project lately and, yes, the tooling is very poor, although it is getting better. I have found poetry to be a very good for venv management and lock files + having one file for all your config.

totony··on We fixed f-string typos in popular Python repos
Yeah I got bitten by the same-color syntax highlighting a few times.
totony··on SELinux is unmanageable; just turn it off if it gets in your way
You hit the main issue with selinux: most documentation is aimed at policy developers and not end users. Your main issue was that you were trying to adapt the reference policy without knowing its inner workings.
totony··on SELinux is unmanageable; just turn it off if it gets in your way
http://www.selinuxproject.org/page/Main_Page has some good resources, but most documentation is aimed at policy developers and not end users.
totony··on Whats New in PHP 8.2
alternatively, they could add calling functions with keyword arguments as in python, where you'd call key_exists(needle="needle", haystack="haystack")
totony··on Ask HN: How to overcome fear of the unknown when applying to jobs
In my experience it does not matter if you have a weakness. Just acknowledge it and move on. The only reason someone would fail so late in an interview imo would be either we found someone better or the applicant didn't acknowledge that he didn't know or wasn't familiar with what we asked.
totony··on Ask HN: How do you give advice?
Make them figure it out themselves. Advice is rarely acted upon, but nudging someone will make it "their idea."
totony··on Python’s “type hints” are a bit of a disappointment to me
>My editor now has a fairly deep understanding of my code, and can tell me of all sorts of surprising errors I'm making before I run the code.

I agree this is useful, but to me the most useful feature of types are the self-documentation. It's crazy the difference between a non-typed library with shitty documentation vs a typed library with shitty documentation.

totony··on Ask HN: What should I bring up during salary negotiation as a junior developer?
Let's say you normally get 5%/y augmentation, but you can leverage a job offer to get 20%, that's 15% more. If your salary is 100k usd (55$/h for 35h/w), then that translates to 15k. Assuming it takes you (6h x 6 potential companies) 36h, that's 420$/h (assuming you work the whole year).

All this to say, with charitable estimates, this seems very worth your time.
