totetsu··on FTC is investigating OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over product risks
Trump's America’s AI Action Plan[1] already says

>“Review all Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigations commenced under the previous administration to ensure that they do not advance theories of liability that unduly burden AI innovation.”

totetsu··on Doing a Machine Learning PhD While Working in Japan
I have a post graduate degree from a Japanese university. I thought the undergraduate program in my home country was far more academically rigorous. Most of my fellow students here seemed to be trying to just avoid having a hole in their CV while they waited to re-take licensing exams or find a job. I did get a lot out of the experience.. and I there is a lot of learning that can happen in that situation too, but I don't think anyones once noticed that I have this qualification.

I don't think its just religious faith and belief, but also like how much people want to believe that the society they are part of, and that provides for their every day life, is a moral, just, and necessary one. And how much that puts on the blinders to questioning things. Israel is simply labeled a "like minded country".. at this point sounds a lot like "we have certain things in common, Jeffery" to me..

totetsu··on Generate fonts where every LLM token is the same width
I think any of the current interfaces using thinking tokens and other contexts, make the actual input one types such a small part of the total input tokens that it probably doesn’t have much influence.
totetsu··on The internet discovers TLA+. Now what?
The LLMs used to write these things, do not start by using empathy and a theory of whats in other peoples minds.

It is a gamble, and they are basing the policy positions on like a RIETI Technical Paper about the ARI, or automation risk index.. Which underneath is based on a bunch of surveys of "experts" to give a number on how automatable, specific actions are, then breaking up a job into a list of actions, and scoring the job for the ARI.. But the methodology that those experts used to make up the numbers is entirely undocumented.. and the assumption is that a whole job, can be automated if all its actions can.. and that a whole .. business and workplace, can just be switched, economically to an automated workflow, without any consideration of how it all has to integrate into everything else.. and other non-automated parts..

Global right wing parties are connected by strategy sharing institutes. Souring sentiment towards immigrants is part of the playbook of these political movements. Minor parties in japan picked this up and ran hard with it and started to pick up votes, so the incumbent party shifted that way too. I think it's ultimately all part of shifting social norms towards deregulation and privatisation.
totetsu··on Generate fonts where every LLM token is the same width
This made me realize that my usual practice of typing at 80% accuracy, full of mistakes, when sending input to an llm is probably increasing my input token count.

Maybe reading a book or two about media literacy might help you more? It’s a very well studied area. There is lots very basic things about identifying and analysing health claims that is in the public health sector too. Groups like the anti-rumour project also have good materials. https://ccre-cemr.org/impact-community-society/anti-rumours-...

Maybe look for a university that has their critical reasoning or introduction to academic writing courses online and look at the course readers.

All of this will help you more than tweak coding a flash card app with an llm.

totetsu··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
Was this a action constructed so that its suppression makes the suppressed message easier to understand? If meta takes down the video they reenforce that the glasses can be used in a bad way, and if they leave it up the initial critical message can spread. Like the 2012 Barnaul “toy protest” in Siberia.

totetsu··on Asking authors about their own papers
Sorry to be uncool and try and explain away the joke, but. I'm reading three parts to this.. one is the risk to the job of researches, by the impacts of the systems that they have typically used until now, by being flooded with texts that look like research articles, but are produced by llms.. another is a critique of that system in the first place, in the interaction of both for profit publishing, and research funding based on measuring of publishing in those for-profit journals.. and then there is also a concern about theft of work, and plagiarism, by AI providers, ingesting pre-published work, and training on it, and additionally those providers maybe acting as gate-keepers or .. imposing their own normative values or being opaque and not impartial in how they operate.. Did I parse that correctly?
