torh··on Blizzard Revives 'StarCraft' Franchise with Open-World Sci-Fi Shooter
All I could think about watching the trailer was that this must be a game based on Starship Troopers.
torh··on Matrox: Graphics for Professionals
I remember people I knew wanting the Matrox because it was possible to have duel screen on Linux. They usually had a huge grin on LAN parties, once they got their breath back from carrying two heavy CRT monitors and a PC tower. Good times.
torh··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Earlier this year, a few weeks before the price hike, I bought an MacBook Air M5, and it was everything I hoped it would be. Long battery life and silent. The last part is important for me. I've gotten so fed up over the years by Wintel (Windows/Intel) machines where the fans are always running, even when idle.

My last Mac was an MacBook Air from 2011 (now we can talk about "a little sluggish"). I also don't dislike the current MacOS, although I do prefer the older look to the new one. But this is from a person using Windows 11 at work, so everything is a step up, right?

torh··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
At least there will be a copy left for us. The AI companies won't share these books in their original form.
torh··on Why Microsoft Entertainment Pack had a sticker announcing that it had Tetris?
Thanks for the patience. After a good nights sleep I see it straight away... "Now includes well rested brain".
torh··on Why Microsoft Entertainment Pack had a sticker announcing that it had Tetris?
Yeah, sorry... It did not. Is it a reference I don't get?
torh··on Why Microsoft Entertainment Pack had a sticker announcing that it had Tetris?
Link number 2, about Tim Paterson, was new to me. Thanks.
torh··on Why Microsoft Entertainment Pack had a sticker announcing that it had Tetris?
As the article stated; they made the boxes before they had secured the license. I.e. the boxes were made before the content was ready.
torh··on Why Microsoft Entertainment Pack had a sticker announcing that it had Tetris?
I can recommend "The Digital Antiquarian" for games (https://www.filfre.net/) and "Abort Retry Fail" for hardware companies (https://www.abortretry.fail/)
torh··on Why Microsoft Entertainment Pack had a sticker announcing that it had Tetris?
Maybe it's as simple as for the people making the boxes, it didn't contain Tetris from the start. And when they got the license, in their head, it now did have Tetris.
torh··on Zuckerberg encouraged growth over child safety, ex-Meta executive testifies
It's a long time since I used Facebook on a regular basis, but Instagram is a weak spot where I have had to set the phone to give me just 10 minutes per day, then shut it off. Now I can go days without opening the app, and I usually manage to exit before the time is up.

I can highly recommend the book "Carless People" by Sarah Wynn-Williams if you want to know just how bad it really is/was. Just remember that this is just one side of the story. Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg (no longer at Meta) probably have a different story.

torh··on How Did Poland Get Left Off the Windows XP Map?
I read somewhere that Microsoft stopped doing these maps because of border disputes.

Don't mention Taiwan to the Chinese, etc.

torh··on Show HN: Desktopcolors.com – A museum for solid background colors of classic OS
My favorite was the blue in Windows 2000. Never cared much for the green in Windows 95/98. When installing Windows 98 later (because games) I would try to set up the same blue. Instead of getting it correct, I guessed, and ended up with #336699 which was easy to remember and "close enough". I see now that it's closer to Haiku (almost perfect, #336698) than Windows 2000.
torh··on Codex in ChatGPT desktop app for Linux is now in preview
FYI; This link shows Codex based on your current OS. I get a norwegian landing page with a download link for Windows.
torh··on Zuckerberg's superyacht ignored emergency channel, failed to aid stranded boat
So, different rules for the rich?

I fail to see how a rescue mission is more likely to get you boarded, with all the attention a mayday will attract.

torh··on The Story of Mac: A Just-So Story
What a lovely little story. Inspiring even.
torh··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
> to make their installations work just to get a UX that's almost as good as Windows from 20 years ago

To be fair, that was the peak of Windows UI. Also, KDE Plasma is way ahead of Windows (any of them).

torh··on Cool URIs Don't Change (1998)
Not that long ago I clicked on a link that Microsoft provided somewhere in Windows -- could have been the event log, I don't remember. I do remember it was for a specific support article, but it ended up at a generic landing page for something. I am not talking about a link from Windows 95, it must have been Windows 10. But regardless, it is all gone. Then again, it probably wasn't a cool URL to begin with.

It's amazingly many news sites that also seem to scrub their URLs every time they do a redesign. Also uncool.

torh··on Windows died inside Microsoft, a 25-year veteran on how Azure took over
Yeah, it was better. Windows 8 and 8.1 was a disappointment with its "metro style".

It seems that way. And most people would probably follow along, not knowing any alternatives. But I like the idea of "local first", no online account required.

torh··on Microsoft filings suggest "around 70%" of its AI revenue is on OpenAI
Ed Zitron wrote about this (at length) earlier this week: <https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-ai-demand-bubble/#analysts-e...>
torh··on Windows died inside Microsoft, a 25-year veteran on how Azure took over
At some point I guess things became "good enough". The leap to Windows 95 was huge. The leap to Windows 2000 was huge. Leaps in hardware was huge as well around at that time.

It's many years ago I felt things started to plateau. When was the last time you were excited about a new processor? Or a bigger hard drive? If Microsoft makes their money from OEMs, and OEMs want to sell new hardware, I guess Windows needs to demand more resources... to keep the OEMs happy. TPM 2.0? For our security, or an easy way to sell new hardware, since Windows 10 will be "obsolete" and you "have" to upgrade to Windows 11.

And just to squeeze out some extra bucks, Microsoft discovered what Google and Facebook found out years ago... there is serious money in advertising.

I have an old Windows 8.1 PC in a corner. It has all I need, really. Enough disk and RAM for my usage (not a gamer).

torh··on SpaceX at $100 Would Imply Zero AI Value, Morgan Stanley Says
I'm not so sure. Is there really a demand for more AI data centers? Has anyone been turned down by OpenAI or Antrophic because they are out of capacity?
torh··on Why malloc always does more than I asked for?
This puzzled me as well.
