tomjen··on Ask HN: The Hacker News effect
Properly not - servers are so much faster now than they where back when /. ruled. It is unlikely that we will ever see the slashdot effect again unless somebody submit a geocites page.
tomjen··on Increased food intake alone explains the increase in body weight in US
That might very well be true, but then there should be a small number of slightly (but not all that much) more expensive restaurants, that will rather focus on a bit of upscale food.
tomjen··on Doomed Engineers: Careers even worse than yours
Since he was lost in early 2007, I would say yes for all practical purposes.
tomjen··on Doomed Engineers: Careers even worse than yours
True. Could he be made a British knight posthumous?
tomjen··on An Unschooling Manifesto
You might be able to try it out in Denmark. Granted it would never fly in the public schools, but we have something called "free"* schools that are largely subsidised by the public, but with very wide rules for what they can do, so you might be able to use that.

* Free as in speech, but I don't think there is anything like that in the US.

tomjen··on An Unschooling Manifesto
We all read it.
tomjen··on A few comments on pandemic influenza
There are properly more people living in Washington DC than in Europe during the time of the plague.
tomjen··on Things I’d Tell My 21 Year Old Entrepreneurial Self
If you succed you are basically set for life. If you fail you loose 4-6 years of your life. How is that different from a startup?
tomjen··on Principles of XML design: When to use elements versus attributes
That depends on what you use it for - yaml may also be appropriate for configuration files.
tomjen··on The Power of Nice
You are not thinking this through. Ally yourself with four or five rude people and get them to stand in front of you in the line. Then you get some tickets for the next plane and split them with the rude people.
tomjen··on Yahoo Quietly Pulls The Plug On Geocities
For geocities? That can't possibly be that high.
tomjen··on Game Developers and Porn Stars
Well, they get paid a lot more money.
tomjen··on Ask YC: Innocuous news?
I got a much better idea - why not just spell it hazer?
tomjen··on Haskell: It’s like Klingon, but with math
You can do meta programming in Assembly too, but it is much more common in Lisp.
tomjen··on [dead]
I think all the old WWWII guns are too rusty to be fired at this point - they are almost 60 years old now.
tomjen··on Ruby style guide
Well all it tells me is to stay out of his projects. Everybody knows that there is only _one_ space after a dot.
tomjen··on Why Java Doesn't Need Operator Overloading (and Very Few Languages Do, Really)
It is sort of an unofficial shortcut in UNIX. less use it as well.
tomjen··on [dead]
He properly had the knowledge that the eye could not see the difference, or that the phones did not display more than 20 different colors.

But yeah that quote isn't the best.

tomjen··on [dead]
Well Google adwords will get you from the point where you can start to make money until you are big enough to deal directly with the advertisers. That is not a small benefit.
tomjen··on IE8 will be distributed via automatic updates for IE6/IE7
>Organizations that wish to block the distribution of IE8 should have their blocking in place by the week of April 20th.

Fulfilling Hitlers old plan to take over the universe?

tomjen··on [dead]
Properly, but unlike the rest of the rich startups can leave the country, setup their servers in another country and their customers would never know the difference.
tomjen··on IE6 Upgrade Warning
If it takes twice the work.

Anyway I would just add a small notices on the top of the page saying something like you have an old browser, so this page may not render correctly.

tomjen··on Google App Engine gets Cron
That is indeed pretty stupid, but on the other hand you can set up a task that runs often and then split the time consuming task into several smaller tasks and then only execute on task at a time.
tomjen··on The recession may be lifting
Good credits, and somebody will be happy to lend you money.
tomjen··on Bruce Sterling requests assistance proving the validity of his marriage
How cares if they are an easy target? They are still the ones who are enforcing an unjust law against you.
tomjen··on Ineligible Bachelors: Indian Men Living in U.S. Strike Out
Maybe it is because they have spent time in the US that they want such women?
tomjen··on Will your application scale?
He is partly right, but if you think about what you are doing it shouldn't be such a big issue to scale reasonably well later on. Rails is properly more difficult to get to scale since that was never a concern of DDH when he made it, something like Erlang scales because it was made to do that.
tomjen··on With 'Atlas Shrugged,' Hollywood may have its first anti-bailout movie
You are absolutely right.
tomjen··on [dead]
The annoying thing is that I really want their joke products. I need something to think for me, index my brain and find me a girlfriend.
tomjen··on Western internet censorship: The beginning of the end or the end of the beginning?
It wasn't down for me. You are sure you aren't behind some censorship system.
