tobych··on Things We Forgot to Monitor
Or a service like Twilio, with an HTTP API for this.
tobych··on Lottie Dexter should quit – and take the Year of Code board with her
Ain't it program, not programme, always?
tobych··on Removed use of gendered pronoun
Or they could use one of various invented gender-neutral pronouns, including those listed here:

tobych··on Magnus Carlsen is World Chess Champion
And women?
tobych··on Show HN: I suck at remembering names, so I built an app to help

tobych··on AMD Posts A Horde Of New 3D GPU Documentation
A hoard, surely, rather than a horde.

Hacker News readers are a horde. The newly-released documentation is a hoard.

Assuming this is correct: http://grammarist.com/spelling/hoard-horde/

tobych··on A friend died nearly 2 years ago. I had no idea
Kinda had this happen. My ex-partner and close friend - "my rock" as I called her - Amanda "Moo" Hearn died a few years ago, just a few weeks after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I'd not called her for a couple of months. Kept meaning to. Then I suddenly had this urge to know how she was, and called, but the number had been disconnected, I think, so I called her sister who said "Oh, I'm so sorry Toby, Moo died yesterday." So yes, that Charles Hanson Towne poem (elsewhere on this thread) rings true for me. I email friends and call them occasionally and flippantly say "Hey, you're alive!" (I moved to the US six years ago and haven't been in touch quite like I used to be) and they don't realize I actually mean it. I hold a lot of guilt inside, dreading learning of another friend's death in a similar manner. Good to read this thread.
tobych··on Show HN: EasyRes – a fast OS X screen resolution switcher with animated previews
Bought. Nice. One thing: the icon has ended up as the far-left icon in my menu bar, and vanishes at anything less than full resolution. I might need to get BarTender, to help deal with that, but perhaps you can do something to help. Maybe I just need to learn how to arrange my icons in a particular order.
tobych··on Steam-powered Blender
Me too. Thought it sounded cool.

tobych··on For Brits: click Republican? on the Guardian front page to hide royal news
Shame they're not tracking its use, at least just for fun: I can't see an HTTP request going out when I click the toggly link. The Wikipedia page quoted elsewhere here cites a Guardian and Observer (same company) poll reporting 54% support for the abolition of the monarchy.
tobych··on Linux has better hardware support than OS X
Do people really do this on the native OS on a Mac? I use Macs for all my work, but we deploy to Linux, so that's what runs in all the VMs I run on my Mac. Currently I even use Eclipse in an Ubuntu VM to do the work. I wouldn't know how to install a package on my Mac if I tried, and given that all the production machines run on Linux, I've never seen the need.
tobych··on StarWars + Git logs = StarLogs
Yeah, that happened to me on the first couple of tries. I parsed the '/' as meaning 'or', but of course it means a slash, here.
tobych··on Inappropriate comments at pycon 2013 called out
And a hashtag. #joanofarc or something.
tobych··on Inappropriate comments at pycon 2013 called out
Exactly. Hopefully she can get some therapy and learn how better to deal with her triggers.
tobych··on The PyCon Incident
In her blog post, Adria writes:

"I realized I had to do something or she would never have the chance to learn and love programming because the ass clowns behind me would make it impossible for her to do so."

Hey, that's a strong claim.

This sounds like an anger management problem to me.

She writes that she's been on the road for ages. Sounds like she's exhausted, and needs a break. I used to react over-the-top to stuff like this, and used to work with others who did. I think the more politically aware you are, and the more your ideals and goals are at odds with how much of society is, the more effort you need to put into being able to deal with the inevitably strong feelings that come your way daily, unless you choose to just avoid being around stuff that triggers you, assuming that's even possible.

tobych··on Goodbye, Malcolm
I've been working with @birdsarah at the PyCon sprints on our first commit to Django. We've had super patient help from core developers Julien, Carl, Aymeric and Honza. Then I wanted to get in touch with one of the people who'd originally worked on the refactoring we're working on, and it was Malcolm, who I'd never heard of, and I was told he'd died the previous evening, and obviously I felt sad about that.
tobych··on The Explosion of the Ariane 5
I worked on the Cluster project as a software developer for many years, at the University of Sussex in Brighton. My first job. And it blew up. Great first job. I was watching live with hundreds of engineers and scientists at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. There was silence. All we could hear were birds singing, coming over the satellite link. Quite an experience. Amazingly, the Cluster project got up and running with replacement hardware a few years later, and I was back on the job.
tobych··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2013)
That is so me. I'm too busy right now though.

My LinkedIn profile starts with "Not looking for free soda, free lunches, nerf guns or ping-pong; just a nice cup of tea in the morning, a few potted plants, mature processes, and perhaps a great view of the city..."

tobych··on Django 1.5 released
A triumph of hope over expostulation.
tobych··on Ruby deploys temporarily disabled
We're trying out DjangoPyPI 2 to host our own PyPI. Seems very actively maintained, and works a treat, despite it being still early days.

http://djangopypi2.readthedocs.org/en/latest/

For now though we'll probably just create a new git repo with a folder full of source distros (tarballs and zips), as mentioned above.

tobych··on Is this a good commit message?

tobych··on Suite of 300 icons for web and user interface design
Thanks!

Not to be picky about the punctuation or anything, but I would have thought a comma would be good here:

"Each icon is a single Photoshop shape layer, meaning ..."

Alternatively, replace "meaning" with "so"?

Thanks again!

tobych··on iPad mini
I recall he said it can be held in one hand, not "used" with one hand.
tobych··on GPS equipped shoes that will lead you home with LED signals
Designated shoes.
tobych··on LIFE on the Moon (1969)
Yeah, that was the one that grabbed my attention. My mum and dad met in 1968 through a computer dating agency in London. Friends are often skeptical that such a thing existed back then. Nice to have this to show them.
tobych··on Waking up early, 10 tips that worked for me
I realized this about me too, the other day. I'm completely unrealistic about schedule for the first half-an-hour or so after I wake up. So I try to get as much done the evening before so there's less risk of that unrealism trashing my morning.
tobych··on Ziptastic: Isn't a zipcode enough?
I worked for Avalara.com for a while: they help companies calculate sales tax based on location. I learned there that the five-digit ZIP code is certainly not enough. Some five-digit ZIP codes cross state boundaries, for one thing.
