tobiasu··on Fastmail: Increased storage quotas and other service level changes
What has your mother to do with this? Have you read Swiss laws on the subject? Have you followed the news about Swiss email surveillance?

You can't go around promoting a service based on a countries privacy laws, when those laws are ineffective against the intelligence agencies the users seek protection from.

To give just one example: The German Bundesnachrichtendienstgesetz simply exempt the BND from entire sections of the Bundesdatenschutzgesetz. The BND says they are respecting the law. What they don't say is that there is nothing left to respect.

tobiasu··on Fastmail: Increased storage quotas and other service level changes
BULLSHIT. Yes it has to be said this strongly.

These guys are reading your mail: https://www.li.admin.ch/en/index.html

Random sample from heise news: http://www.heise.de/tp/artikel/9/9462/1.html http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Big-Brother-Awards-Sc... http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Online-Durchsuchung-u... http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Bericht-Datensammlung... http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Neuausrichtung-der-Ko...

If you can't read German laws and news (or whatever language the jurisdiction in question uses), you can not make an informed decision on these matters.

tobiasu··on The Monster Truck Madness 2 website has been taken down
This isn't bit rot. It's ridiculous to remove a product because it got minor media attention.

They are ashamed of their own history and have no sense for public relations. Many successful companies build museums and archives, support outdated products, sponsor enthusiasts of old crap, etc. In return these companies have dedicated fan bases, enthusiast clubs and whatnot.

But MS doesn't get it, because they are too concerned with their quarterly earnings and the only marketing they understand is paying an agency big bucks for pretty lies.

tobiasu··on The Monster Truck Madness 2 website has been taken down
Nothing but contempt for this barbaric destruction of its own history. A new low point.

tobiasu··on UK police mistakenly believed they found 3D printed gun in raid
Nothing stops you from milling and turning plastic. Not only that, there are many heat resistant plastics on the market that are far stronger than some poorly bonded ABS.
tobiasu··on Seagate just reinvented the disk interface using Ethernet
Yes it has. Being German, please google it.

The Sonderkommando was a special group of prisoners at Auschwitz who had to prepare and cleanup the extermination of millions of prisoners. Their job was to carry the dead from the gas chambers into the ovens. They were recycled every 3 months or so by a fresh Sonderkommando, whose first job was to murder their predecessors. They also made history by starting the only counter-attack at the camp, blowing up one of the gas chambers.

You can write "Deutschland ueber alles" all day, that's a minor issue. But using Sonderkommando in the wrong context can cause quite a stir.

tobiasu··on French Court Allows Reverse Engineering of Skype Protocol
The court follows the EC Directive for legal protection of computer programs, specifically Article 6. Every EU country should have laws in place that allow for reverse engineering within certain limits.

tobiasu··on Nokia unveils Lumia 2520: 10.1-inch tablet with Windows RT
No way. I have no idea how mAh are measured in a lab, but they are certainly not in relation to 1V.

To get Wh, multiply by voltage. 2.6Ah * 1.2V = 3.1Wh. 8Ah * 4V (one cell is my assumption) = 32Wh.

The battery has 10x the capacity of a NiMH (that's the lower limit, it could have two cells but that seems a bit excessive for such a device).

Other than the battery discussion, Nokia devices running RT are about as interesting as the dirt on my shoes.

tobiasu··on CryptoSeal (YC S11) Shutting Down Private VPN
Switzerland is far from being innocent saints when it comes to surveillance:

The Swiss SIGINT equivalent is called PTSS: https://www.li.admin.ch/en/ptss/index.html https://www.li.admin.ch/en/ptss/legal.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_intelligence_agencies

And don't get me started in HK, NZ or Iceland. If you really want to protect Osamas IRC server and worse with your VPN service, you require specific political protection from the host country.

tobiasu··on Nvidia to release documentation on Nouveau project
That is the reasoning I've heard (read on the ML) from nvidia employees working on said driver.
tobiasu··on Nvidia to release documentation on Nouveau project
The nv driver exists for the single purpose of getting into a working desktop, so one can install the proprietary driver.

It is not intended as decent 2D-only driver or anything like that.

With a username like yours, this must be the finest "think of the children" satire.
tobiasu··on The parody shirt the NSA doesn’t want you to wear
Zazzle fears the cost of going to court, even if it looks like a certain win.

That's a general problem with the US legal system, and would be worth protesting about more than any NSA scandal combined.

Discrimination of the poor from access to justice.

tobiasu··on Turbo-charged cracking comes to long passwords
Sure it's fast on algorithms that were designed to be fast (SHA1, MD5, various jokes thought up in five minutes, etc). However, what you want to look at is a proper method. From the performance table:

    bcrypt $2a$ 3788 c/s 1583 c/s 3861 c/s 626 c/s
That will take a while...
tobiasu··on Don't Fly During Ramadan
I certainly agree. Concentration camp is an umbrella term, both in German and English. However, if we're talking about the exact type of camps, it makes sense use the proper words and inform readers of the distinction. It's only fair to the victims to use appropriate language and not play down the severity of their situation.
tobiasu··on Why does NASA use gold foil on equipment and gold-coated visors?
You can buy your own space age gold foil from many places as "rescue blanket". Quite cheap, around $3 for an adult sized sheet.

I've used it to insulate south-facing windows in summer. It's phenomenally effective.

tobiasu··on Don't Fly During Ramadan
Concentration camp (KZ) sounds about right. The term for places like Dachau and Auschwitz is Vernichtungslager (extermination camp). A concentration camp is not set up for industrial mass-murder of its prisoners.
tobiasu··on Ditch Your Passwords? US Gov To Issue Secure Online IDs
You joke, but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De-Mail

The drugs that were consumed when they came up with this must be government issue only. Stuff's too hard for the streets..

Also, the crypto is as secure as a wet paper bag..

tobiasu··on Should you delete all emails you get while you are on holiday?
Not legal in sane jurisdictions. There is no guaranteed delivery of email. Important stuff still needs to be sent by confirmed fax, or snail mail with various options to confirm delivery to the recipient.

They are not making a fully functioning lawn mower that goes 130mph, and certainly not one that you can buy.

Not sure what's novel about this. It's nothing but Honda marketing.

tobiasu··on UK government invests in Sabre air-breathing rocket engine
Thanks for the link, this clears up a lot: http://www.reactionengines.co.uk/images/sabre/sabre_cycle_10...

There is no nitrogen in the system (not as consumable, anyway). Shoddy BBC reporting, as usual.

The heat exchangers use chilled hydrogen fuel they have to take up anyway, before it is burned in the rocket motor.

That makes a ton more sense.

tobiasu··on UK government invests in Sabre air-breathing rocket engine
How and where does the nitrogen boiler(?) get its energy too cool helium to -170C at a constant rate? Is it effective to chill what must be ginormous amounts of air to -150C? It's all nice that the heat exchanger works, but where does that heat go?

There's a large discrepancy between the inlet air temperature (1000C vs 20C) in the article.

Somehow my sense for violation of the laws of thermodynamics is tingling.

tobiasu··on NSA Rejecting FOIA Requests by US Citizens
Voratsdatenspeicherung has nothing to do with the secret services. It is a tool for the police they can access with a warrant. The BND is not complaining that this is currently ruled unconstitutional, they are simply not affected.
tobiasu··on If PRISM is Good Policy, Why Stop with Terrorism?
They did offer him asylum, with the condition to shut the fuck up and not continually interfere in international politics.

He rejected it for his own reasons.
