tobias3··on The European VAT Is Not a Discriminatory Tax Against US Exports
B2B sales from the US to the EU have no VAT. B2B sales between European countries have no VAT. If you sell to a consumer you pay the VAT where it is consumed.

Please stop spreading lies.

tobias3··on The European VAT Is Not a Discriminatory Tax Against US Exports
B2B sales between European countries don't have a VAT.
tobias3··on Argentinian president backs away from LIBRA memecoin after 90% crash
What was the hope here? That it replaces the Pesos? Privatized money creation like in the middle ages?

(My guess is that he was just scammed himself or it was corruption)

tobias3··on DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via RL
Seems bad for those GPU backed loans
tobias3··on Jürgen Schmidhuber – Can All-Purpose Robots Fuel a Comeback?
It's the eastern european development strategy. Have lower taxes on software engineering to grow that industry.
tobias3··on Jürgen Schmidhuber – Can All-Purpose Robots Fuel a Comeback?
We already have Airbus Helicopters development and production in that area (Donauwörth).
tobias3··on Base-Rate Blindness
That was not going where I expected it to go.

Please also account for all the marketing companies on top of the social media game on all platforms kept busy with the AI hype.

tobias3··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
We recently had a few submissions about this topic. Most recently Ilyas talk. Further improvement will be a research type problem. This trend was clear for a while already, but is reaching the mainstream now. The billions of dollar spend goes into scaling existing technology. If it doesn't scale anymore and becomes a resarch problem again, rational companies will not continue to invest in this area (at least without the usual research arrangements).
tobias3··on Star Citizen Is Nearing a Billion Dollars in Crowdfunding, Still Not Out Yet
If you live in a country that has consumer protection laws maybe you can get a refund. There is a whole sub-reddit about recovering the money ( https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen_refunds/ ).

Do this soon before they run out of money.

(It is just a scam, not a pyramid scheme. E.g. it is perhaps the same as the Tesla full self-driving)

tobias3··on Bots, so many bots
European eID solutions can do some of those (e.g. is over 18). Let's see if usage becomes more wide-spread.
tobias3··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
The history as a prosecutor might be a significant advantage in a general election. The anti-police senitment has waned and she can position herself right at the center w.r.t. rule of law.
tobias3··on Science fiction authors were excluded from awards for fear of offending China
I wouldn't care if this wouldn't impact winner quality. Presumably there are a lot of authors which need discovering (or perhaps not, idk).

But a book like "The Calculating Stars" is just so bad, I'll never trust the Hugo award again.

tobias3··on Tell HN: Wise froze $40k+ in funds for 10 days and counting
Funnily enough Wise is the only "non-bank" that currently pays me interest on my money voluntarily (that is going to be fun doing taxes for). All other banks are currently forcing me to open new accounts and shuffle the money (triggering god knows what checks each time I do this).

> Netherlands

Yeah, the neo-liberal tax-haven narco-state :)

tobias3··on -Werror Is not your friend (2017)
You can do that if you have full control over the toolchain.

For example I ran into this issue with the AWS C++ SDK ( https://github.com/aws/aws-sdk-cpp/ ). And then I had to go into several CMake files and remove Werror. What do I as a user care about warnings? Can I only use that SDK once I have fixed (probably more like silenced) all the warnings?

At least they added a option now after a few years of this annoyance: https://github.com/aws/aws-sdk-cpp/issues/2555

tobias3··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
You are basically describing what Windows has as appx/msix. The decentrialized notarization authorities are the code signing certificate providers.
tobias3··on WEKA Responds to Allegations Made by MinIO Regarding OSS Licensing
MinIO had a large investment round at unicorn valuation at the end of last year. Watch them desparately move up market (or more like flailing around) to recoup that investment.

Meanwhile they cannot get their software to work on ext4 and it is apparently ext4s fault[0].

tobias3··on The venture capitalist's dilemma
“Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.”

Applies to the democracy + capitalism combination, as well.

We can try to improve upon it, but should be carefull to not kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

tobias3··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
Looking at the bigger picture, I do not know if this was the correct decision. The depositors were bailed out (it wasn’t just a liquidity issue) and the FDIC is paying for it.

This means all FDIC members will need to pay less interest on deposits to make up for increased FDIC insurance cost.

This will increase the speed with which people take out deposits and put it into e.g., short term treasuries because they get more interest. Enabled by easy-to-use fintec made in Silicon Valley.

This will decrease bank profitability.

And this is on the “Liability” side of the balance sheet. If the FED is successful in causing a recession surely there will be a lot of insolvencies (people swimming naked etc.) and there will be problems on the “Asset” side as well.

How can this end well? We just failed at most easy hurdle here.

tobias3··on My ADHD founder toolbox
Well, that is how the best content marketing works. You make a good write-up of an area, then casually mention the product somewhere -- also needs to look natural. If author got paid it needs to be marked as sponsored in some jurisdictions.

I'd also guess that many with the condition have tried all the common treatment options and will zero in on the one thing new that the person saying they have the condition under control offers as new treatment option.

tobias3··on Ask HN: Corp gives “contractor” benefits, want “employee” obligations, what now?
In my country one can report employers that treat contractors as employees to the customs agency (idk why that one) which may investigate the company and rectify the situation.

Given that the company doesn't have an office in the country the most likely outcome will be that they will just give all the employees in the country the option to move or get fired, though...

I also don't know how and if a local agency would have any way to enforce employment laws across borders.

tobias3··on Mtime comparison considered harmful (2018)
Good news is that there is work on making the i_version field available via statx in Linux: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-nfs/20220826214703.134870-1-jl...

So we might have a reliable mtime alternative in Linux soon in 2022.

tobias3··on Nuclear turn green as EU parliament approves new taxonomy
RBMK-1000 is actually still in use in Russia at three locations (they obviously fixed the bug that lead to the disaster, so it won't repeat 1:1...).

That also points at one issue. All the now >50 year old reactors should have been replaced with newer versions at some point. Just think about what kind of electronics there is in those things. This didn't happen anywhere. Not in Germany and not in France.

tobias3··on Google Search Is Dying
The problem is that ads price discriminate. Google may not get much money off of you, but there are other users that are very valuable (think of a manager in a billion dollar enterprise searching for a subscription product to buy). Would you be okay with it costing 0.05% of your income?

Of course it will be hard to compete with ads as business model if the alternative doesn't allow for price discrimination.

tobias3··on Apple will charge 27% commission for alternative payment systems in Netherlands
That's a good point. They are taxing paid apps and not taxing ad-supported apps. Which incentivizes the ad-model and therefore reduces the number of paid apps.

This has been the case since the beginning with mobile app stores so who knows how the distribution of paid vs ad-supported apps would be if this wasn't the case.

tobias3··on Microsoft’s new Windows prompts try to stop people downloading Chrome
Use Windows Pro and Group Policy Editor. There isn't a checkbox there but a radio box that allows you to configure update behaviour in detail. Never had an issue with it during all upgrades.

And if Windows Home users should be able to disable automatic updates is debatable.

tobias3··on Covid-19: stigmatising the unvaccinated is not justified
Difficult to categorize as such, because the vaccinated still spread the virus. And as long as R_t>1 pretty much everyone will get it.

So unvaccinated cause harm to others indirectly by burding the healthcare system. And one also does that by socially acceptable stuff like motorcycling (or maybe that's a plus if one is organ donor?).

tobias3··on Against Discord Channels
Someone who actually used this and made the transition should correct me:

I bet the usage of "server" came from the TeamSpeak world where you had to self-host it on your own (dedicated) server.

Of course giving away the hosting for free is going to attract users and one doesn't look a gift horse in the mouth.

tobias3··on How Microsoft reduced Windows 11 update size by 40%
On Windows an admin can selectivly apply individual updates, which isn't possible on macOS, I think. The core algorithm that calculates the dependencies is horribly slow. They are working around that with update rollups and cumulative updates since Windows 10. There are multiple layers of snapshotting going on during updates (VSS + Transactional NTFS).

Then for example "Update telemetry" scans all applications on the system and only gives you the option to upgrade to Windows 11 if it doesn't find anything incompatible. On Apple you just get the option to upgrade and stuff just stops working afterwards.

tobias3··on Canada's 'gamble' on delaying, mixing and matching Covid-19 vaccines paid off
Yes, the US didn't ever have an explicit export ban. But the US government had passed the Defence Production Act, then went to the vaccine manufacturers and made priority contracts with them. What did you think would have happend if the vaccine manufacturers had say no, we'll supply the highest bidder from our US plants first?

The only other production locations were in Europe, so guess where the vaccine manufacturers thought Canada's doses would come from?

Please don't fall for the obvious obfuscation from the US government.

tobias3··on Open Source Tax Software
The German tax system works this way. German authorities specify the rules in a DSL and e.g. https://www.elster.de is generated from them where you can fill out all the tax forms (also e.g. companies). Stuff that they already know can be pre-filled.

Sure it would be great if that was Open Source, but it does its job this way as well?
