> Petzold is considering using his rigs for an aspect of digital video production known as rendering, which can require significant computing resources. “There are other uses for the cards”

This is an incredible quote.

People have realized that there are other uses for graphics cards than mining crypto currency - like, oh I don’t know, I guess graphics.

I just did a quick test of cycle.travel using the last couple trips I took, and it’s pretty good!

It’s anecdotal, but definitely better than what I’m seeing with Val halla / google / apple.

Can you share any details about how your route finding works?

tmp538394722··on Show HN: Self-Hosted Maps Stack
Very nice!

I haven’t looked into the code yet, but I’m especially interested in the routing bit.

As a cyclist I’m almost always disappointed by google, apple, and Valhalla. The cycling directions from these systems are usually better than nothing, but almost always have one or two dangerous or ridiculous segments.

I’ve never tried to solve it myself, only day dreamed.

Any insights?

> when you run the program, run it with ` MY_SECRET_KEY=myGitHubPersonalToken npm start`

But where does this live? Or do you literally mean that Jane The Sys Admin is supposed to type this into her terminal every time the service restarts in the middle of the night?

What if I need to replace a node? Or scale a service? How do these secrets get there?

tmp538394722··on Ask HN: Is DBA still a good job?
This isn’t a value judgment on database administration, just an anecdote:

I’ve worked at 5 small companies in the last 15 years, and freelanced for a few years. The dev team size was: (15, 5, 5, 4, 8). None of those companies had a DBA. One company we had a full time IT/sysadmin, but otherwise that role was filled by people with a title like “software engineer”.

In truth, I think we often would have benefited from the expertise of a DBA, but we never made the decision to hire someone for that role full time.

I’m all for respectfully seeking atonement, so long as it’s understood that the victim doesn’t owe the perpetrator anything.

Parts of the article made me uncomfortable, like how after the perpetrator had been blocked, they went through friend back channels to continue to try to communicate with their victim.

Maybe that kind of stalking will ultimately work out for the best for everyone, but that’s pretty presumptuous, and seems more about assuaging the perpetrator’s guilt complex than victim recovery.

tmp538394722··on MIT-0 License
All things being equal, people will use the license that is easiest for them to understand that it meets their needs.

(One of their needs might be that other people also easily understand their license)

Using familiar “branding” like MIT is arguably a way to communicate easily and efficiently.

When people sell “gluten free pizza” they are banking on the fact that people know what a pizza is.

tmp538394722··on REI Workers in Manhattan File to Form Company’s First Union
Do you know the difference between a member coop and a worker coop?

REI is technically a member coop, so members (shoppers) are privileged to some of their profits. Members are also entitled to a vote for the board - but as far as I’ve ever seen this is a sham (two people running for two positions… can’t lose)

But a member agreement has very little to do with how workers are treated.

A “worker coop” might be what you’re thinking of - where all the employees collectively own the business and have some say in how the business is run. (Though how much say varies depending on the coop).

REI is not a worker owned coop. And whatever “member owned” coop benefits they have are basically a sham in my opinion. It’s basically a loyalty fee - like a Sam’s club membership except you only have to pay it once - meaning that your membership at REI is probably less valuable than your membership at Sam’s club.

The small town I grew up in also had a specific Soviet doomsday theory. Which in hindsight, doesn’t feel very plausible.

In the wake of the George Floyd protests family talked about their concern that out of state “Antifa looters” were spotted driving down the interstate headed right for them.

I don’t mean to call you a liar, Im sure there indeed are some obscure targets, and your home might be one.

I do think it’s a fascinating phenomenon- this idea of small town obsession with their own destruction.

A quote from Terrence Malick’s BadLands goes something like:

tmp538394722··on Why Not Rust? (2020)
Just guessing, but speaking from my own experience, the trouble came when interacting with existing APIs, where you can’t choose what to pass around.

Some expect String while others expect &str.

Once you understand why, it’s easy to intuit which one should be used where, but it was a day 1 speed bump for me.

Swift is written in C++

It seems not sooooo unusual.

tmp538394722··on Colorado 'solar garden' is a farm under solar panels
I assume upthread is talking about Boulders “urban growth boundary”.

I think the most likely “free market” result of removing the restrictions would be what they call “suburban sprawl”.

There are a lot of reasons to consider suburban sprawl damaging/harmful/polluting.

There are a lot of valid critiques to be made of an arguably NIMBY policy like the urban growth boundary, but it’s more than just “farms are pretty”.

No one is suggesting it should be impossible to uncover crimes.

But I’d say that we should work to make it impossible for mass surveillance to exist, full stop.

Police should have to do real actual detective work to implicate people in a crime.

If I understand the point you’re trying to make - I appreciate it, but I wonder if you might be talking past each other.

Just to be clear, consensus is intentionally very different from a simple majority system - the way that most of the historical racist systems have perpetuated.

It’s certainly not impossible for these things to exist in a consensus based environment, but it’s a different beast.

tmp538394722··on Don't Be Anti Car. Be Pro Something Else.
As someone who rides a bike for errands and fun, I’m often locking it up.

My unsolicited opinion: I love the plain and simple single upside down U.

My unsolicited rant: I’ve seen and attempted to use many variations, and anything more or less than a single upside down U is always worse.

- usage of space: “racks” that are intended to be used for lots of bikes almost never work out. An upside down u fits two bikes. Simply installing more U’s will have a better outcome than a single “multi-bike” rack because the racks almost never work as advertised - inevitably someone has a kids seat attached to their bike, or a trailer, or a taller bike or shorter bike, or whatever, and then they just end up using the two sides, or going across the whole rack, so all the middle space is wasted space anyway.

- security (eg is it the right height/width/length that I can fit my lock, and lock up all the parts of my bike, not just the wheel). With the U rack, yes, otherwise, almost never as good, and often much worse.

ergonomics - can I easily get my lock around the rack and my bike, lean my bike against it)

I’ll grant that maybe you want to sacrifice utility for a particular “look” but please do so carefully and deliberately. Good luck!!

tmp538394722··on Catholic Church official resigns after cell data tracked him to Grindr, gay bars
Any catholic scholars have a vision for how The Church could remove its prohibition against sex (including homosexual sex)?

It seems unlikely to happen soon, but also it seems kind of inevitable. I’d love for this particular wheel to turn faster.

Some fascinating stuff on Wikipedia:

> In February 2019, the Vatican acknowledged that the policy has not always been enforced and that rules had been secretly established by the Vatican to protect non-celibate clergy who violated their vows of celibacy.[2][3][4] Some clergy have also been allowed to retain their clerical state after fathering children.[2][3][4] Some Catholic clergy who violated their vows of celibacy also have maintained their clerical status after secretly marrying women.

> [Pope Francis (current Pope)] commented that celibacy "is a matter of discipline, not of faith. It can change" but added: "For the moment, I am in favor of maintaining celibacy, with all its pros and cons, because we have ten centuries of good experiences rather than failures.... Tradition has weight and validity. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clerical_celibacy_in_the_Cat...
