tmilard··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
No. You are not declining. You just need a break. Go out with friends. Do some Sports, socialise. Take oxygen. I am 55 and still ok.
tmilard··on I am done. I give up
In a way the tremendous success of YC drove this false belief that :

- Creating a startup is fun & rather EASY success.

It's not. It's never been. It will never be.

I am fifty three: I now know.

I also was a teenager then a young adult, influenced by "entrepreneurs" of their time.

Entrepreneurs dream is RISKY.

Start-up's future is 90% of the time doomed.

Worse : Chance plays a big role.

tmilard··on One of France's oldest butter producers makes 380 tons per year [video]
Nice to see someone so in love and dedicated to a single product.
tmilard··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
In the 2005 I published a guide (cafes-wifi.com) to 130 cafés in Paris with good free wifi and electrical plug. Tested myself. Made it for my friends, nomad software workers. But quickly became a big success among many nomads workers but also tourists in Paris who needed connexion.

In 2017 The website was closed.

Overall for a decade I had 10.000 unik visitors / month. Impactfull I would say

tmilard··on Show HN: I 3D scanned the interior of the Great Pyramid at Giza
It's nice. Maybe the best matterport's example I have seen so far... The 3D in the transitions [of two 360 photos] are really good and the pixel quality is great.

But still... The very limited part of Matterport is that it is "mostly" a series of 360 photos.

Now, because a pyramid is mainly a long corridor, you do not see too much those limitations.

So great.

tmilard··on In a Way, 3D Scanning Is over a Century Old
Yes, The target ( of Scanning 3D objects).

But not the solution witch I bet, has had many differents solutions.

This one solution ( 'slices od 2D'), one century old, still used in 3D laser scanning and printing, is poised to have a more robust and fine grained one.

tmilard··on In a Way, 3D Scanning Is over a Century Old
It is a good reminder that today we are not more clever with time. We come here only with more tools, easier tools and more time to think...

Also a reminder that the 3D scanning is still unchanged after 1 century. Odd...

- But why ? 1) Because it was the good solution ? Maybe....

2) Because no one has had the new-thing that will level up the way we do 3D scanning ? I hope so

tmilard··on Tell HN: A disabled 40-year-old person founded a startup and makes a living
Great job. Very inspiring project...

I also think it is best to keep a job in the beginning. At least keeping a half time job. In France we have a great unemployment benefit (2/3 of salary Netto). This is great for founders to be full-time on the project on the first year and a half. I used it.

According to many business Angel, unemployment benefits counts for the BIG majority of 'investment' in a startup.

tmilard··on Ask HN: What do you do to get new ideas for projects?
I agree. Because you are parallèle in two disciplines.
tmilard··on Ask HN: What do you do to get new ideas for projects?
I just look at the world. Objects along the subway. It slides in my mind to "why did they choose to build this object this way". Then I kind of guess the why. Than it shifts to "Why don't we build an automat/or/ device that takes the imput and product the object automatically.

So, This is ho I get ideas for projects.just observe the world of man-made-built

tmilard··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
Working on Distance-immersion Example: click here (twice) https://free-visit.net/fr/demo01

Ps : I knew today's Standard technology was 360°photos. But I was convinced this was not an immersive enough technology.

Immersion, for me, should feel more like a video game FPS.

So I gave it a try: - A No-Coding Editor, just photos as input, plus 20 minutes of clicks and you have your immersion.

Solo project

tmilard··on JDeploy – Deploy desktop Java apps as native bundles on Mac, Linux, and Windows
Thanks Shannah for the tool. I have always thought oracle was so uncool (and shooting in its own foot) not investing in better and easier deployment tool...

I really will definitely try it out for my free-visit builder installer. If it works well like some have said, boy you saved my day ♥. Love

tmilard··on Instant neural graphics primitives with a multiresolution hash encoding
Magic, impressive. I have no word.
tmilard··on The Essence operating system at Handmade Seattle 2021 [video]
It is refreshing to see so many good new GUI ideas. Most of them I had never thought of.

Some people are born more creative and more clever than others. A leader

tmilard··on Ask HN: What do you think about the no-code movement?
Software == a NO-CODE tool
tmilard··on About that time I had an outburst during the Y Combinator Interview
Yeap. Deep burst of personal explanation is rare, and we hide it. -How can my untested thought can be better than the leadings explanations on the subject?

In our work, when we explains things, even When my brother does his YouTube family video... we always follow "today's" way of doing things. It does feel ok, but it taste like déjà-vue.

I find it so more captivating when suddenly a unik-and-personal approach steals the show.

Even if the personal approach can be wrong or ridiculous, it feels always very fresh, compare to the me-too explanation.

It's sharp, it's bare bone, it's naked, it's trurth.

It's worth

tmilard··on Ask HN: What excites you today (technologically speaking)?
3D-scanning of, places....

All the trend of VR usually forgets that until now it was very difficult ( & costly) to have the 3D scan. Of shops, malls, indoor homes, cities, so we can get web users to immerse into. This excites me because it is happening now.

Examples : Matterport, Unity, free-visit ( https://bit.ly/3BIMfwl )

tmilard··on Ask HN: Why is my Kickstarter failing ?
Thanks.
tmilard··on Ask HN: Why is my Kickstarter failing ?
Got it.
tmilard··on Ask HN: Why is my Kickstarter failing ?
b) The 'video game ' thing was the 'FPS' as opposed to 360-visit, the standard technology. A was told lost people do not click with "FPS" acronym.

Re: who is your audience ? -Well I would guess photographer who want more than photos : virtual visit

tmilard··on Ask HN: Why is my Kickstarter failing ?
Thank mojomark for the long answer. - Re: "shooter". Maybe use First Person Walker?" --> This is a great idea . Thanks.

Honestly I do not know yet my target customers... Kickstarter was also a way to find my market, or if there was even one

tmilard··on Ask HN: Why is my Kickstarter failing ?
Perhaps yes : a franchise with photographers. Like people of Matterport do. This is a reason why I thought photographer would have been more interested in my crowdfunding.
tmilard··on Ask HN: Why is my Kickstarter failing ?
- Q1 Yes it is rather easy to use

- Q2 I try to avoid showing to much of the editor because no-patent issue.

- Q3 For now, only tablet, PC or Macintosh

- Q4 you provide the software the floor plan

tmilard··on Ask HN: Why is my Kickstarter failing ?
( and of course like most people, I had a secret dream to make 30K$ so I could stop my job and be full time on the project for one year )
tmilard··on Ask HN: Why is my Kickstarter failing ?
I did put the goal very low. I must admit. I hoped that much more people would pledge. This is not obiously the case. I secrettly hopped for 3000$ pledge, not 320$

tmilard··on Unity but Simpler
Good engine is like unity : a full fledge 3D editing tool. I built a tool that is not full fledge --> it is "only" if you wish to do a FPS game with photos
tmilard··on Unity but Simpler
Not at all. Free-visit is not flash at all. It uses hlml5, javascript API like Babylon.

And moreover : 1) it is higher level : no programming, just cut paste, drag and drop 2) photos are the main data free-visit uses

tmilard··on Unity but Simpler
Unity 3D is great but still too difficult of us. So I build free-visit. From photos you build your game on any web platform.
