tmilard··on My trip to the Communication and Laptop Museum in Estonia
I absolutely have to go to this cool museum... Estonia is a great startup country: Online administrations, ect... They love startups. Tallinn, the capital city, is an european hub for small startups. And this comes by no miracle: - First let's not forget that Estonia used to be part of USSR from 1945 to 1991. This is not ideal for startup land... - The real trick is that long before communism came, society in Estonia was rich and full steam on trading with boats. Hansea ligua was a big a thing in Northen Europe. Trade, compromise, innovation was already rooted in the Estonian working culture. Vive l'Estonie

tmilard··on Poll: Do you get along with your parents?
Yes, but it took all my 20s to settle this idea
tmilard··on Ask HN: Resources for older developers?
I am not sure older dev need a specific type of resource to learn new language or skills...
tmilard··on Europe’s Longest Bicycling Tunnel Opens in Norway
Bergen is a wonderfully city. I remember. I lived at a families place in my 20s. So nice. It doesn't surprise me.
tmilard··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I built a simple software that generates immersion of artist studios. Example (please refresh twice to visit) here: https://free-visit.net/fr/demo01

- Why ? As a parisian living in Belleville (poorest area), where artistes build things, I used to visit a lot of "artists studios". I have always loved this places. "J'aurai voulu être un artiste", in a way. I always thought that no photography or 360-photo would feel the Space, the immersive feeling.

tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
Yeah you are right
tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
I use this one. Web compliant. https://www.babylonjs.com/
tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
Only once :

- Step 1: download zip file containing my XML point file and my 90 PNG texture files.

- Step 2: open zip file and dezip in 91 filed

- Step 3: run 3D games with all the 91 Assets. The (small) game engine reads each 90 PNG files and - of xccourse- transform each one in a GPU compatible texture.

All zip takes about 6 seconds. Not so bad

tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
Yes I agree but the PNG compresion size is so great ! The Textures in total reduce enormously my game file size. By 15 times : so good. And because it is small the web download is VERY quick. Very.... So in a way I loose a bit on decompresing textures time, BUT a gain a lot od seconds in dowloading reduced textures files.
tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
But not the high texture
tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
Really ? It does not feel this way on my scene that has more than 90 .png files used for texture.

The time to : download the globel zip file + open and reading the points and all textures => 5 to 7 seconds. This is super quick !

tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
And I do not even talk about the GPU work to handle those thousands of triangles. With 300 points, my scene runs quick&fast even on budget Smartphones ! This is an important issues I can tell you. A video game that runs on all devices ...
tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
I it is true : I was very agressive on this one. But still, thousands and tousands of triangle feels like so much overweight for me. Specialy for indoor scenes. Quality for the eye is a lot to do with texture, NOT the number of triangle.
tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
I think in today's machine (be it PC, Mac or even Smartphones) the reading-and-transform of a png asset for the GPU is hard coded in the processor : so VERY fast. It works well.
tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
good idea : one why chitty etxture quality, one with average, one with quality texture. They have done this on web-videos. Why not on video games files ?
tmilard··on Faster LZ is not the answer to 150-250 GB video game downloads
Chocked at FAT size video games file ? Me too. Giga bytes Damned !

To reduce the size, I decided : 1) To use the standard PNG compression. 2) To limit mesh size at less than 300 points for a scene.

- Result : a) File size < 1 mega Byte ( really). b) It downloads in 4 seconds.

Check it here : https://free-visit.net/fr/demo01 (pleaseload url twice : I still have a bug)

Question : - why video games STUDIOS do not use this strategy ?

tmilard··on Text2Room: Extracting Textured 3D Meshes from 2D Text-to-Image Models
I do believe this kind of quasi-automatic 3D-Realistic-scene-generator is great. But maybe at the end useless.

So why you ask me ? - Now while the speed of 3D generating is wonderfull, and the 3D accuracy is "Ok" (but will progress more in the short future I bet). So great. But... But it lacks a unforgiving flaw : - You can NEVER correct the 3D the 'automat' has guessed for you. I mean it will go wrong in a few parts, and you can NOT do anything with it.Sadly.

I believe that once this kind of softwares really gives the user a magic tric to MANUALLY correct some part of the 3D mesh, you have got a winner and a major selling software.

tmilard··on Least Resistance: How Desire Paths Can Lead to Better Design (2016)
Yes. This is why it's always nice to keep a budget after the software is released. Morover for version 1.0. To listen, observe and discover the pain points, the surprising routes users make using the software...

Then you change the code to stock to the user behavior.

tmilard··on Night Train Map with all regularly served night train destinations in Europe
Wonderful global Map of all sleeping train ! My god, I Wish I had this map last summer when using my interrail pass.

Why ? : - All sleeper trains are scattered with so many booking Apps or internet service. A real pain.

Thanks for this wonderful MAP!

Ps: If traveling in Europe, I recommend booking really in advance as most sleeping wagons are usually all booked 2 months before departure. ( In one trains only 2 cars are sleepers).

Also do not even think of jumping into a night train with no reservation : you will be kicked out immediately. Security is king.

PPS : After 20 years of scaling back, sleeping trains are making a slow come-back. Hence, new trains lines should arrive during the next 3 years .

PPS: I work for SNCF ( french rail) so you can trust my words

tmilard··on Death as entertainment at the Paris Morgue
Here is a good visual introduction to the Paris Catacombs . https://youtu.be/la4roWgqriA

As for me as a Parisian I'll probably meet you there in a few decade. Ah ah !

tmilard··on Death as entertainment at the Paris Morgue
Statistics show women read enormous amounts of crime and murder stories. Fascination for death has always existed in a way or another. What is rather new is the fact that we can identify to suffuring more quickly. We can "identify to it" more easily, and I do believe it is for the good.
tmilard··on Death as entertainment at the Paris Morgue
sorry. I meant 1989 of course
tmilard··on Death as entertainment at the Paris Morgue
I am a Parisian. In 1889, at the time the Berlin wall collapsed, as a 20 years your man,I had the chance to meet a cool guys who had the paper map of the "non official" catacombes. Fuck boy, let's go men !

We started at midnight after a few beers in a poor Paris area ( Denfert Rochereau). The entrance of the "unofficial katacombes" was an o small manhole next to an abandonned train track. We had to run into to avoid the "catacombes police". Once inside boy: kilometers of corridors, sometimes mostly dry, sometimes half floaded. I tell you water is cold. After 90 minutes of walk, we arrived at the "pinacle of the night". It was these bones cathédrales or corridors. We would walk into "à Quatre pâtes" on thousand of bones carefully packed. Terrifying but so exciting for a young guy like me. Fuck what a night ! We got out , with a tibia as a souvenir, my sister doing dentist studies at the time took back a full scull with many teeth, Wich apparently was necessary to practice at University.

All this to say that the Paris morgue entertainment show does surprise me but I can understand. Death was so commun, so 'normal'. Today we are also a bit extremist in a way. Perhaps

tmilard··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
Almost gave up this tool to build FPS immersion visits. From photos. In 2021-22 had only little traction.
