timeimp··on 2023 State of Software Engineers [pdf]
>The most in-demand skill was Ruby on Rails, with engineers skilled in this framework and scripting language receiving 1.64x more interview requests compared to the marketplace average. Ruby on Rails bumped Go from first place in 2022’s report to fourth this year.

Woah. That’s an interesting finding.

I wonder what RoR is doing to make it so in-demand?

timeimp··on Time to get the Posix elephant off our necks?
But that would require effort, organising and building!

I come here for the snarky comments and the “walking away feeling good” feeling, not actual action! /s

This post feels like it falls into the XKCD trap of “soon: there are 15 standards”

If you remove POSIX, what will replace it? If the answer is “nothing” then now on earth do you compete with a “build once run 99% everywhere else” mantra?

You’d end up with IE6 and ActiveX all over again, or HFS resource forks

I find it amusing that in the US its "cash back" when getting money out at a retailer using debit cards but here in Australia its "cash out."
timeimp··on Apple announces ‘upgrade’ to App Store pricing, adding 700 new price points
10x the number of price points is nuts.

Then again, at this point, Apple is a treasury operation that also sells phones and computers.

timeimp··on Towns are testing new ballot counting machines that use open source software
How else can the TV networks know on the day!?!?

I mean, run the elections on Saturday instead. Then you'd have a whole weekend to count without work getting in the way

timeimp··on LGP-30 found in basement, the same model of drum computer programmed by “Mel”
That was a great write-up to have a squizz at.

Amazing to see how many different arch's will run from 1 set of binary.

timeimp··on Microsoft Full Circle
The “death blow” for macOS would be when you can develop, compile, test and publish iOS apps without a Mac.

It would become on life support at that case.

Any Apple engineers reading this - an update like Snow Leopard would go a long way!

timeimp··on Ask HN: Why do we allow Equifax, Transunion, and Experian to exist?
The idea of government doing this is laughable.

Not on principle, but on reality. They’d be slow to get started, and change would take forever (short of legislation).

These companies exist to serve legitimate needs in the various industries they serve (as yuck as that statement may be) and have hundreds of years of experience judging people.

Yeah it sucks, but what’s the solution? Rely on people’s “feelings” about other people?

You’d bring back community bank managers in a heartbeat if you did that!

timeimp··on Why is Canada euthanising the poor?
Yeah but my feelings.

My feelings override everything in this article.

My feelings.

Could you imagine being in this position? Could you?

It's all about the goal here - peace and no pain.

Nope, not about the system. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.

timeimp··on TikTok and the Fall of the Social-Media Giants
I've heard (anecdotally) that the attention span of all the younger users has taken a dramatic shift south.

Educators and employers are noticing they cannot keep students / new employees engaged.

Makes me wonder what damage is happening, long-term, with all these short bursts of dopamine that TikTok gives it users.

timeimp··on High tuition costs mostly stem from the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act 1993
Why not penalise tertiary institutions by stating that if students don’t find employment using those credentials, within 2 yard, their alumni fund / endowment fund gets raided the cost the degree?

timeimp··on Telegram Ad Platform
Here's hoping there will be a way to pay for no ads.

But a question to HN: why have we not seen a mass-market adoption of a P2P, non-centralised messaging system that requires no external services to work?

Mesh and other sorts of networks are cumbersome and have not reached mass-market adoption, so what (technically) is stopping a true E2E P2P platform?

timeimp··on Google Is Testing End-to-End Encryption in Android Messages

timeimp··on From McDonald's to Google
What an amazing "fill-in-the-gaps" comment!

I wonder, what was it like being the people who helped YouTube before they were a Google company? Did you ever interact with them on a day-to-day basis?

And with your payments stuff - how did those changes help the business you worked for? Faster batch reconciliation / processing or something else?

timeimp··on Maine Becomes First State to Use Ranked-Choice Voting in a Presidential Election
