timdiggerm··on A better Mastodon client?
All the AI generated illustrations used in this post appear to show a wooly mammoth and not a mastodon. Here is a nice comparison; the mastodon is on the right: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon#/media/File:MammothVs...
timdiggerm··on Walk and Talk
I am disappointed that I missed that. Sorry
timdiggerm··on Walk and Talk
He is almost certainly writing about the laktest Walk and Talk from Craig Mod and Kevin Kelley (https://craigmod.com/ridgeline/043/); Jason Kottke was also on that trip (https://kottke.org/23/11/please-welcome-edith-zimmerman-to-t...)
timdiggerm··on E3 Is Officially Dead
> A mix of new competitors, partner withdrawals, changing audience habits and pandemic-era disruptions led to E3’s collapse, ending years of attempts to resuscitate the event, which began in 1995.

This poorly worded sentence can easily be read to state that the years of attempts to resuscitate E3 began in 1995.

timdiggerm··on Modern C++ Programming Course
"A Little History of C 3/3" says that C was used in the special effects for Star Wars. I do not know what relevance this has, honestly, but independent of that is the strange choice of photo: an image from the Empire Strikes Back which shows stop-motion models with optically-composited, rotoscoped lasers. Excepting that this may be from the digitally recomposited Special Editions, no C code was used in the making of this shot.
timdiggerm··on GPTs: Custom versions of ChatGPT
Definitely a very funny example of their own product's shortcomings
timdiggerm··on Moon-forming impactor as a source of Earth's basal mantle anomalies
It seems like the circumstances of our planet's location and the moon and the resulting tides and temperatures are rare. And our evolutionary history seems very dependent on those.

The question is whether or not there are other good ways to end up with an abundance of complex life. We have no idea.

timdiggerm··on Nightshade, a tool allowing artists to 'poison' AI models
"forward" towards what?
timdiggerm··on Orcas that hunted alongside humans might be extinct
Their food source was in steep decline due to worldwide commercial whale hunting; extinction is not surprising
timdiggerm··on Best Buy stores to stop selling DVDs, Blu-ray in 2024
I would bet that the numbers on even DVD impulse purchases are pretty low
timdiggerm··on GPT-4 “discovered” the same sorting algorithm as AlphaDev by removing “mov S P”
His comment "Sparks of AGI" ought to tell us a lot
timdiggerm··on Weird GPT-4 behavior for the specific string “ davidjl”
It is, at best, designed to resemble something human-like
timdiggerm··on The Sourdough Framework
From the intro:

> It is crazy if you think about it. People have been using this process despite not knowing what was actually going on for thousands of years!

Just wait until you hear about literally everything ever

timdiggerm··on CanceledGPT: Finds and revises your old offensive tweets before you get canceled
Ah, but people cast it anyway
timdiggerm··on Adobe Firefly: AI Art Generator
> The current Firefly generative AI model is trained on a dataset of Adobe Stock, along with openly licensed work and public domain content where copyright has expired.

timdiggerm··on Unpredictable abilities emerging from large AI models
Sorry, did it try to predict the output, or did it only predict the output based on what it has seen people say about similar code online?
timdiggerm··on ICC judges issue arrest warrants against Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova
>not that he was very likely to begin with

I feel like this is over-stating the previous likelihood

timdiggerm··on I broke a wine glass with my voice (2018) [video]
It would be great if you told us what the elephant is
timdiggerm··on Consultants: the real reason it costs so much to build new subways in America
Now do the DoD
timdiggerm··on Saying goodbye to Stack Overflow
I would love to see the author's posts
timdiggerm··on Data-Free Disney
Surely the solution is to just not go to Disney
timdiggerm··on Show HN: Find similar podcasts
I am not sure that this works very well. I put in "BibleProject" and "Alastair's Adversaria" which are both Christian Theology podcasts, and I got back "Erotic Short Stories: Read by Mia Hart" as the top result which... I just doubt that's a similar podcast.
timdiggerm··on Find a Font (1976) [pdf]
Pretty funny that their priorities in alphabets were Greek, Cyrillic, and...Tengwar.
timdiggerm··on ‘My power’s low’: NASA’s Insight Mars lander prepares to sign off
Don't underestimate the size of a planet
timdiggerm··on The Last Question by Issac Asimov [pdf]
A classic in the genre of "Technology is so great, maybe...God is a computer?". See also: Simulation Hypothesis
timdiggerm··on Ten years after the Higgs, physicists face the nightmare of finding nothing else
Mathematically, yes. But in terms of value, no.
timdiggerm··on Just another Apollo? Part two (2005)
Wouldn't those crews have all had big problems with cancer and muscular atrophy?
timdiggerm··on Ask HN: Is anyone else glad the crypto market is crashing?
By "potential" do you mean "potential stated by crypto investors & startup founders" or like...something more objective?
timdiggerm··on Nelson testifies cost-plus contracts have been a “plague” on NASA
You mean if they don't deliver the product after they signed a contract?
