Take this with a grain of salt as it is speculation, but I'd be very surprised if there were not plans to vacate SF eventually.

Skype is definitely #1 on the list. It is remarkably easy to get an IP given a skype username

That's helpful, thank you!
timboslice··on Nofakeinternet.org
TL;DR:

Zuckerberg's partnership with telecom giants, Internet.org, provides access to a fake Internet where selected services are prioritized over others. This scheme threatens innovation, free expression, and privacy online.

It blocks many of the websites, apps, and services the world loves from being made available on equal terms.

The fake Internet will also restrict access to local service providers struggling to get a foothold online.

Hear hear! If you aren't paying for a product, you are the product.

I'd love to see that project play out. Imagine if consumers could click a button to donate to their charity of choice

I miss the good old days of "If you aren't paying for a product, you are the product." Now, the new paradigm is: "By using our stuff, we own your data. All of it."

How do Global Fortune 500 companies think bundling malware is OK still after all the bad press the last few years?

timboslice··on Facebook Starts Hosting “Instant Articles”
I never thought of it that way, but it makes sense. The rise of RSS in the mid 2000's gave way to all sorts of plugins to inject ads into your RSS feeds as a way to cope with the lost web traffic

From other comments:

Booo zebra mussels... Cutting my feet and killing off fish.

Fun fact, single colonies of zebra mussels may contain over 70,000 mussels per square meter!

timboslice··on Credit card terminals have used same password since 1990s, claim researchers
I wonder what is available in the settings interface? For example, is there some gateway address that could be changed to a MITM transparent proxy? They act like this is no big deal, but 9/10 of these machines has the same password!
timboslice··on Recycling in America
Interesting, I'm in STL city and never heard about that. Granted, I rent and usually trash fees are paid by my landlord.

A similar thing happened to my parents, living in a Milwaukee suburb. They have a well drilled and use well water.

The city decided that this is a health hazard and is forcing everyone to be on well water. Not only do they tear up your yard to drop the pipes, you also have to pay a contractor to hook up the water main to your house. Non-compliance results in a fine. A FINE?! For using your own well water...

timboslice··on Fxpay: Mozilla's JavaScript library for in-app payments
TL;DR:

For developers building web applications on Firefox OS or Firefox Desktop, supporting payments is easy with Mozilla’s fxpay library. In addition to accepting credit cards, it also supports billing to a cell phone #

In the current post Snowden climate, can't we agree that this is at least a good thing? The good it does at the most basic level is protect your communications from prying eyes.

>the tradeoff of getting the bundles right, which of course reduces cachability

If you are revving your bundles with hashes (main.8a4ce55.js), caching shouldn't be a problem. Not sure what your build process is, but there are plugins to do this on most setups.

timboslice··on Guerilla Open Tube: A Distributed, Censorship-Resistant Backup of YouTube
While I agree GH may have a problem with this, in this case they aren't technically a "tracker" as they don't facilitate connections between seeds and peers. They just provide the metadata (magnet links)

Here they are for you:

Samuel Adams is the brand name for beers produced by the Boston Beer Company (NYSE: SAM) and its associated contract brewers.

Battle rapping, which can be freestyled, is the competition between two or more rappers in front of an audience.

In the 1980s, battle raps were a popular form of rapping - Big Daddy Kane in the book How to Rap says, "as an MC from the '80s, really your mentality is battle format...

He is most famous for creating the acclaimed film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, which heralded a new era of African-American focused films.

The gains made by African Americans in the Civil Rights and Black Power movements not only obtained certain rights for African Americans, but changed American society in far-reaching and fundamentally important ways.

timboslice··on Why you can't get 4K Netflix and Amazon
TL;DR - speculation it's due to DRM/pirating concerns. Most TV's have no output and are therefore a safe mechanism to allow playback, whereas a PC could rip the stream
timboslice··on Google AdWords Lightbox ads now available across all screens
>Lightbox ads are great at driving brand consideration because they’re billed on a cost-per-engagement (CPE) basis. This helps your digital display dollars go further because your brand’s experience automatically finds a qualified audience -- and you don’t pay if people don’t expand and engage with the creative experience.

Pretty nifty! Supports standard IAB sizes too, so you won't have to re-jigger your creative too much

timboslice··on Slack vs. HipChat vs. Hall for project communication
It's a slim review really. Like a typical software review they include a feature comparison table, but don't dive very deep into daily usage of the platforms, and really only show demos for Slack.

The overall tone I got was, if you aren't using chat software now, you should really be looking into it and here are three options.
