tim333··on To Grieve, or Not to Grieve?
As a non mathematician I think it could be kind of interesting to see what the AI can come up with.
tim333··on Fuck Android Developer Verification Program
Maybe they could count users and reviews?
tim333··on Let's Ditch Google (Verb)
I tend to say googled still as google has the AI thing. Asked AI?
tim333··on Gemini 4 Argon
Google would be quite a large snail.
tim333··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
Trouble is Putin is not prepared to freeze it where it is now.
tim333··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
Huh? Geography shows NATO borders Russia in Latvia and Estonia, now also Finland. Ukraine was neutral till 2014 when Russia invaded it. Russia is so full of shit. It's like 1984 war is peace type stuff.
tim333··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
I think weak compared to people thinking of them taking over Europe. They still have a lot of military though and the result in Ukraine is up in the air still.
tim333··on Anthropic's IPO Prospectus Is a Fucking Doozy
I guess they are subsidising things to try to get ahead of openai, google and similar but not sure how that'll work.
tim333··on Anthropic's IPO Prospectus Is a Fucking Doozy
I think AI will transform things but the Anthropic financials are crazy. I suspect you'll get your crash. It's like Webvan saying the internet would transform commerce. Yes but...
tim333··on Ukraine Can't Stop Russia's Jet-Powered Shahed Drone
Or more usefully they could send some fighter jets over Ukraine to shoot down the incoming drones and missiles like they did for Israel.
tim333··on Ukraine Can't Stop Russia's Jet-Powered Shahed Drone
It's like calling a ball point pen a biro. Not that weird. Or propagandic.
tim333··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
For Altman to be banged up you'd have to convict him of some actual crime.

The article seems mostly to go for copyright infringement in training on public data which the companies dispute and is not the sort of thing you generally get jailed for.

If anything, given the current admins talk about beating the Chinese in AI being the main thing, he's more likely to get an award for it.

tim333··on AI is a normal technology? (Claude 5.5 video in musical style)
I thought the Gary Marcus bit funny.

The vid is well done too - probably than your typical human one.

tim333··on Where's the "Intelligence Explosion"?
If you look at computer chess it improved steadily, there was a bit of a fuss when it beat Kasparov, then it kept going. People still play each other at chess much as before.

I figure it'll be like that with general intelligence - bit of as fuss as AI overtakes but humans will keep on humaning, making things, competing for status. Maybe like Jeeves and Wooster with us as Wooster and the AI as Jeeves. Most of their activities didn't bring much value apart from keeping people busy. AI will probably keep improving a few IQ points a year, not exploding but gradually getting pretty good.

For me the more interesting sci-fi is the merge / immortality stuff, curious how that goes.

tim333··on Where's the "Intelligence Explosion"?
dupe of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49883815
tim333··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
(3) it could be real but with new jobs and increased output rather than depression era unemployment.
tim333··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
The $6T / yr seems to be to justify future data centers much larger than we have now.

I guess either we get human level AGI so it can do human like jobs, or they'll have to trim those plans a good bit?

tim333··on Where's the "Intelligence Explosion"?
I'm not saying they won't improve or self improve, just that it'll be steady more than explosive.
tim333··on Where's the "Intelligence Explosion"?
This seems to skip over or underplay the main reason why we will not get a “FOOM” intelligence explosion. It's that it's constrained by hardware and the chips and electricity supply are maxed out.

It's like for a real explosion you need a lot of energetic stuff, say methane and oxygen, mixed up and ready to go bang. Instead we are burning all the gas as it comes out of the stove.

tim333··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I wonder if clickbait / online entertainment is replacing booze as the opiate of the masses? People have mentioned weed but I see few stoners and like 90% of people staring at screens.
tim333··on Windows 11½
I see on the market share thing here https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/worldwide...

both Linux and macos are roaring ahead and Window declining. I've not really used Windows for years but if it's like this maybe that explains it. Currently on last years macos which is quite good for just plug it in and it works.

tim333··on Windows 11½
7 had the advantage that the drivers didn't muck up the system requiring a re-install. I liked both - I had a saved image to reinstall when it inevitably screwed up.
tim333··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
One example where there are problems is crypto wallets - fake ones can steal all your crypto. Not that it's solved that well with apps - Apple has run ads for fake crypto stealing ones as no 1 in the list on its app store.
tim333··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
I can understand how they can't afford humans to chat to a million app developers but you'd think in this day and age AI could do a decent job of explaining what's up in a polite way?
tim333··on What would a serious AI product look like?
How do you know they can't think? They appear to think if sometimes not very well.
tim333··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
Satire has its uses:

>Although satire is usually meant to be humorous, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using a combination of hyperbole and wit to draw attention to harmful behavior... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satire

Long tradition too.

tim333··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
Millions of peoples computers run malware without them knowing. I've yet to hear of one of those being prosecuted.
tim333··on Cambrian Explosion of AI
>we know what triggered this Cambrian explosion: GPT

I'm not sure it was that so much as the exponential improvement in hardware over many decades reaching roughly human equivalent levels.

I mean check out Moravec's 1997 paper predicting things will get funky in the mid 2020s long before anyone had thought of GPTs https://www.jetpress.org/volume1/moravec.htm

tim333··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
Maybe Trump is a secret green energy fan and figured the only way to convert the world was to shut off gulf production? Also Russian production is not doing well and the final step may be taking out North American production in the Canada wars.
tim333··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
Some Europeans are capable of converting currencies and volume measures.

As a Brit it can be confusing converting gallons to gallons as Americans don't gallon properly.
