tiglionabbit··on V8 adds support for top-level await
Do we really want slow imports though? If you have a bunch of modules with async setup functions, would you not be able to Promise.all() them?
tiglionabbit··on V8 adds support for top-level await
Caching the promise is a perfectly good solution. Locks aren't needed.
tiglionabbit··on Things I Learnt from a Senior Software Engineer
Then the journal could help you notice the problem and take action sooner.

I've had a lot of stress at work. Here's how I dealt with it:

I was once working for a boss who was really infuriating to deal with. To prevent myself from exploding at him, I would take a break, step outside in the beautiful sunlight, put in my earbuds, turn on some good music, and run. I channeled my frustration into exercise. I'd especially make a habit of doing this just before I ate lunch, which would stimulate muscle growth and make me happier and healthier. Somehow that stressful job got me into great shape.

I was once working at a place where all the policies were dysfunctional and things were constantly on fire. I dealt with this by pulling out my phone and using the Headspace app to think about nothing for a moment and calm myself down. When I got back to the work, I'd put on some "focus" music (music for programming, studying, etc) that would help me maintain my calm mood when implementing the fixes. I learned to distance myself from the problem and get people to talk to each other to work it out instead of having proxy arguments on other peoples' behalf.

I've had some pretty bad sleep problems as well. I got into the habit of playing videogames late at night, which really destroyed my sleep. It's really hard to sleep right after staring at bright screens and experiencing intense action. Now I have F.Lux or Night Shift enabled on all my machines and I avoid playing console games at night without wearing yellow safety glasses. Also, I've started adding concentrated lake water to my drinking water since a magnesium deficiency can make it difficult to sleep.

For depression, perhaps learn about Taoism?

If you really can't cope with the job, quit. It'll be even more stressful to try to find a new job while you're already working one. You can search for a new job using TripleByte, which saves a lot of time since you just have to do one coding test instead of 20.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

No it's not. If the syntax is that similar, your metaphor makes no sense.
tiglionabbit··on Monorepo is great if you're really good
Not sure what you're implying about mononoke but the readme says:

> The version that we provide on GitHub does not build yet.

So, maybe eventually. They found that Git didn't do well at their scale, so they modified mercurial instead.

I'm all in favor of a company-wide mono-repo if it doesn't have scaling issues.

tiglionabbit··on Earbuds are bad for your hearing
What’s better than AirPods? And don’t suggest those rubber things that make weird sounds when I move. Apple earbuds are the only ones I know of that I can tolerate.
tiglionabbit··on Earbuds are bad for your hearing
For me it’s not about style but practicality. Headphones are huge. AirPods are tiny. Rubber ear buds make weird squelching sounds when I walk. Apple earbuds are the only thing that works for me.
tiglionabbit··on Canada Border Services seizes lawyer's phone, laptop for not sharing passwords
Then I’d assume it would be confiscated like what happened to this lawyer.
tiglionabbit··on Canada Border Services seizes lawyer's phone, laptop for not sharing passwords
When I was working at Google I had to go through some training videos that explained that you should never bring corporate devices across the border for this very reason -- that they could be searched, thus breaking the NDA. They'll ship you a clean laptop instead.
tiglionabbit··on Canada Border Services seizes lawyer's phone, laptop for not sharing passwords
You don't have any rights at the border. The moment they decide to search you they will ask for your passwords. If you don't give it, they'll detain you until you do.
tiglionabbit··on Canada Border Services seizes lawyer's phone, laptop for not sharing passwords
They should show just one account, but give it two passwords: a real one, and one that secretly takes you to a different account that's also customizable.
tiglionabbit··on The case for rejecting the memristor as a fundamental circuit element (2018)
Is it not possible to create the other "fundamental" components using combinations of other components? I know with logic gates one might think of AND/OR/NOT as fundamental but yet one can make anything out of NANDs or NORs, so they could be considered fundamental instead. It's a thing in mathematics as well that you can often define essentially the same system using different sets of prepositions.

I saw a comment later on in here that explained that memristors, resistors, capacitors, and inductors round out all four combinations of relating charge or the derivative of charge over time with flux or the derivative of flux over time.

tiglionabbit··on The case for rejecting the memristor as a fundamental circuit element (2018)
I only understand your comment enough to reformat it and discover the symmetry you're describing.

capacitors: charge to (flux/time)'

resistors: (charge/time)' to (flux/time)'

inductors: (charge/time)' to flux

memristors: charge to flux

It's every combination of charge or the derivative of charge over time with flux or the derivative of flux over time.

tiglionabbit··on Google cancels AI ethics board in response to outcry
It's not really regional. I have noticed this most from folks who are transitioning genders. Some are OK with "they", but some prefer folks to go above and beyond to affirm their new gender, thus objecting to "dude" and "guys".

As a result, I've gotten into the habit of saying "y'all" and "folks" even though I'd otherwise never have used these words.

tiglionabbit··on COI – Chat Over IMAP
So you mean to say that I can use matrix.org to talk to someone on Telegram? How? I just went to riot.im and I don't get it.
tiglionabbit··on Activision-Blizzard layoffs after reporting record results
This seems like the real answer to what folks are wondering about here. If they just acquired a bunch of companies there are going to be redundant roles to eliminate.
tiglionabbit··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience. I love this simple framework. It's all about how to enjoy learning and improving at things. The author applies it to a wide variety of things, from art appreciation to surviving the holocaust. It really resonated with me. I believe learning anything can be fun.

Atlas Shrugged: I like this book because it attempts to show how things some people think are virtuous can be bad, and visa versa. The protagonists have a sort of honor code to them that defies common ideas of morality.

Don't Shoot the Dog: Describes how to do positive reinforcement training on dogs, horses, and even your children. People don't seem to realize how similar we are to other animals. Also, it's nice to know that positive methods can be more effective than punishments and dominance tactics.

tiglionabbit··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
This book helped me too. I used to hoard all kinds of stuff and find clever ways to store it because it might be useful some day, if I could ever find it at the right time. Eventually I started intentionally buying duplicates of things I needed so there would always be one on hand. I'd especially be reluctant to get rid of stuff that didn't take up a lot of space. I didn't realize how much it added up. Sometimes getting rid of even very small things can make storage much smaller and more manageable. I know where everything is now, and it saves a lot of time! I moved to a tiny apartment and got rid of most of my things and now I'm just nice and cozy with the stuff I actually want.

tiglionabbit··on Why MIT uses Python instead of Scheme for its undergraduate CS program (2009)
Flask is not bad.
tiglionabbit··on Sketches of Elixir
Or because the syntax is directly inspired by Ruby.
tiglionabbit··on The Cube Rule of Food Identification (2017)
It’s not a salad if it’s a single cohesive unit. If you chopped it up, it could pass as a “turkey salad” I guess, in the sense of a potato salad, but that would still be a stretch.
tiglionabbit··on Can We Grow More Food on Less Land?
Is it possible that the soil is also depleted of interesting nutrients and that the fertilizer isn't providing them either?

Our understanding of what micronutrients humans need is not great. For plants, it may be even less understood.

Too many apps are like that.

What you want sounds a lot more like a normal game console.

tiglionabbit··on Paper Airplane Designs
I'm with you on this one.

Virtually all of the instructions on the site begin with folding the paper in half in some way. However, this one breaks that rule:

https://www.foldnfly.com/15.html#Spin-Plane "1. Fold the paper in half about two inches before the edge."

But it doesn't have to! It could just as well have started with a center fold and then folding the corners to the center to measure, then folding that over to measure again. The measurement folds don't have to even be full folds -- you could just fold only at the very edges to lock in the measurement. Also, this plane ultimately has a center fold in it, so it could easily have begun with one.

tiglionabbit··on Paper Airplane Designs
Paper airplanes are generally symmetrical, which means you can begin by folding the paper in half and using that fold to determine where the nose is. Unless you mean something else?
tiglionabbit··on Think Professors Are Liberal? Try School Administrators
He complains about some events. He doesn't propose alternative events. What sort of events would exist if the administrators were more conservative?
tiglionabbit··on Think Professors Are Liberal? Try School Administrators
Well, what defensible prepositions have ya got?
tiglionabbit··on Think Professors Are Liberal? Try School Administrators
The author whines about progressive events existing without conservative events. He never describes what sort of conservative events he would want to see.
