tiatia··on Why Germany Still Has So Many Middle-Class Manufacturing Jobs
Did you bother clicking the link? No.
tiatia··on Why Germany Still Has So Many Middle-Class Manufacturing Jobs
There is nothing bad in being a large or the largest exporter. Germany exported a lot and imported a lot. But recently this had led to the absurd situation, that Germany exports both, goods AND capital: https://www.querschuesse.de/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/1a18....

This is not sustainable.

tiatia··on Why Germany Still Has So Many Middle-Class Manufacturing Jobs
Germany's real secret is that they don't pay their engineers.

An engineer, even with a PhD from a world class university, makes around 55k. Even in cities like Munich they will laugh about you if you request 60k.

Sure, if you have tons of experience, industry contacts etc., maybe more SOMETIMES. But let's get back to the 55k. A short internet search (www.nettolohn.de) tells us this is approximately 2600 Euro net pay per month. And this is for a full time job that is likely very stressful and comes with tons of responsibility. An English teacher in China (Shanghai, Beijing) can make 3000 Euro net a month.

Even if you claim my numbers are a bit off. It gives you an idea.

I think peak war production was end of 44.

But in the end this is not extremely relevant. They still had the knowledge.

tiatia··on It's Never Too Early to Fire
I have a different take. Never forget that you can get fired but also never forget you can fire!

You can fire jobs.

You can fire friends.

You can fire customers.

Makes life so much easier!

tiatia··on 1Password Travel Mode: Protect your data when crossing borders
Upload an encrypted image of your OS (Linux in my case) SSD on your server. Install an older legit version of windows (which was likely provided to you when you bought your computer).

Add some nasty gay porn and you are all set for the border.

tiatia··on US Household Debt Surpasses 2008 High
Why should we pay for "these" people.
tiatia··on FastMail lifetime member plans to be discontinued
You are irrational expecting any other outcome.
tiatia··on FastMail lifetime member plans to be discontinued
"..or changes it mind."
tiatia··on FastMail lifetime member plans to be discontinued
I mean, this is the case with every "life time" plan. Valid until the company goes bankrupt or has financial issues or changes it mind.

Once there were life time "all you can fly" airplane passes for US$ 100k.

It is supposed to have GBit Ethernet now: http://www.banana-pi.org/r2.html

tiatia··on Airbus A380 – $6.1B in additional costs due to project delays
Where? In the US?

I am not sure this is the case in markets with hight growth rates.

tiatia··on Bill Gates questions worth of space exploration for improving humanity (2013)
"Look at all the greed, corruption and anger around us."

"Erst kommt das Fressen, dann die Moral" (first we gorge ourselves, then the morality.)

These are interesting thoughts. But lets not forget what unsound good old Billy used (and MS still used) to establish his former OS monopoly.

tiatia··on China's $1T Plan to Shake Up the Economic Order
Well, they build roads and trains. Something that they know. The Question: Will it be enough? Some people claim that there are no more reasonable investment opportunities left in China.

"The power plants in Pakistan, as well as upgrades to a major highway and a $1 billion port expansion, are a political bulwark. By prompting growth in Pakistan, China wants to blunt the spread of Pakistan’s terrorists across the border into the Xinjiang region, where a restive Muslim population of Uighurs resides."

Well, yes. But there may be other ways to do this. China just wants to have Pakistan as a close ally. If India is an ally of the US, it is a good idea to have an ally that can counter India.

tiatia··on Airbus A380 – $6.1B in additional costs due to project delays
Don't write it off.

1. They say the plane may have been "10 years too early"

2. It will get more fuel efficient engines.

tiatia··on Isdal Woman: A mystery death haunting Norway for 46 years
It sounds odd for a suicide, I admit that.

I was several times in the situation that I had to check into Hotels without a passport or with "modified" data (don't ask). It is nearly always possible. Even in CHINA I was able to stay into hotels without a ID/passport. Something that should not be possible by law.

"Still, if she had multiple fake passports" You phrase this like a fact. If you tackle such a problem the right thing would be "she might have had..". You can never take such information as "proven facts". If I would assign something then: a 50% chance that she had faked passports.

Also, spies normally don't use so many different passports in the same country. Looks odd to me.

tiatia··on Isdal Woman: A mystery death haunting Norway for 46 years
"The multiple passports are fascinating"

1. This is a broad assumption. "this means she would have had several fake passports." Make this a "should". I have checked so often into hotels that either did not check my passport or did not look at it.

2. 70ies passports were easy to fake. In fact, I knew somebody who "professionally" faked and manipulated passports to help people escape from the GDR (East Germany) when he was a student.

tiatia··on One Day, a Machine Will Smell Whether You’re Sick
You measure the spectrum.
tiatia··on One Day, a Machine Will Smell Whether You’re Sick
"But what sensor tech can be used to smell odor?"

Measure the far infrared spectrum.

tiatia··on One Day, a Machine Will Smell Whether You’re Sick
"Odours are just organic molecules"

Yeah. Right. This is why Yeah. Right. This is why H2S has no smell. (in fact, some claim is has not and we smell something else).

"that are detected by the cells in our noses, and it's possible to identify them with various techniques."

Well, I think this was not the question. Yes, the mentioned start-up in this thread (owlstonemedical) uses a "Field Asymmetric Ion Mobility Spectrometer", might work, but I am not too impressed by the approach. Also, would not call this a detection of "scent".

Would be more impressed if they really build an artificial nose that can smell. They eye has not receptors to detect dogs, chairs, cars but detects a spectrum. Same with the ear and actually, the same with the nose. The literature is out there.

tiatia··on Facebook to add 3k people to community operations team to improve moderation
Agreed. But I took the first English news site that showed up. There are enough others.
tiatia··on Facebook to add 3k people to community operations team to improve moderation
1. That this "moderation" is probably not a very good thing

2. In other countries are already highly intransparent and opaque organizations like "correctiv" involved in these "fact checking" and "counter news" operations. https://correctiv.org/en/

3. To make things worse, people (like Soros) donate money to these organizations that have their own agenda.

(not to mention the boulevard style exposure of this politician who is unfortunately form the wrong political party)

tiatia··on My coffeehouse nightmare (2005)
Wow. Downvoted again. I guess the people who downvote me are the same who would make such blog posts.

From the article: "The small cafe connects to the fantasy of throwing a perpetual dinner party."

Face it gentlemen. This guy was an idiot.

tiatia··on My coffeehouse nightmare (2005)
Nah. Next time I make a blog post.

I go into the farm business because cows are so cool and cute animals. Then realize that money does not flow into my window but that farming is actually really a business. Then I write a blog post and resubmit on hackernews: "My farm nightmare (2018)". The TLDR would be: idiot opens farm, goes bankrupt, posts on blog.

tiatia··on My coffeehouse nightmare (2005)
Do you know the 3 most important things in Real Estate? Location, Location and Location.

Also, besides the location, a cheap rent is crucial to your success. I have seen dentists (in Europe) going out of business because of the rent. In many businesses you are in fact in the real estate business. Have you seen the recent movie about McDonnalds? "Founder"?

Quote: " You build an empire by owning the land. You're not in the burger business. You're in the real estate business."

tiatia··on My coffeehouse nightmare (2005)
You phrased it more friendly. But let me rephrase:

TLDR: Idiot opens coffee shop goes bankrupt, writes blog post about it.

tiatia··on My coffeehouse nightmare (2005)
"Food is not an easy business."

Business is never easy, except if you are lucky. They guy was an idiot. Rule #1 in many businesses (e.g. coffee ships, restaurant, hotels, hostels etc.) you are not in the food business or hospitality business but in the real estate business.

tiatia··on Thunder Run to Seoul: Assessing North Korea’s War Plan
Well, so it did definitely NOT lose. The same reason why it won't lose the next war. A Chinese/Russian brokered Regime change is still a possibility. But Kim is not an idiot. He had his brother killed just to eliminate one of the options for a regime change.
tiatia··on Thunder Run to Seoul: Assessing North Korea’s War Plan
North Korea, like the Sow jet Union, has fought a war that the US can not imagine. They fought a war in which they lost 10% of the population. If the US would lose 32 Million in a war maybe the US would lose the taste for war too.

Not going to judge their outdated equipment. But they will fight. This a not Arabic troops from tribal societies who will run as soon as they are given the chance. In fact, North Korea CAN NOT lose this war. They have not lost the last one, they won't lose the next. North Korea is too important for both, China and Russia as a buffer country. Both countries have moved a lot of troops recently near North Korea. If there is a conflict we may seem a regime change (supported but Russia and China). What we are not gong to see is a US occupied united Korea.

One risk with Trumps pressure is they it works two ways. North Korea could reasonably assume that they will loose most equipment if the US attacks. So why not attack first? Use it or lose it. The safest place for a rocket or artillery shell is still in the air....
