thuuuomas··on Paris preserves its mixed society by pouring billions into public housing
Why was this headline changed in such an editorializing way? “Mixed society” is a loaded term not present in the original headline.

Regardless of what’s “natural”, widespread contamination from industry should reduce or remove the limits to industry’s liability. Externalities are real & must be accounted for.
thuuuomas··on AI Is Bad/Good Actually
I agree with your concerns.

To me, it seems like AI boosters subscribe to the ideology of Infinite Growth Forever & all their claims of “AI creating new types of employment that will provide for displaced workers” rest on that hollow rhetoric of prosperity gospel.

Their optimism on behalf of the to-be-displaced is mere PR & not stopping them from privately wishing that the proles, who are Not Gonna Make It, Have Fun Staying Poor.

thuuuomas··on "AI will cure cancer" misunderstands both AI and medicine
> The patience and understanding of an LLM cannot be beaten.

Embarrassing. Hope somebody hugs you today.

> AGI would give you access to millions of times more resources than you currently enjoy. So I would suggest that you have absolutely nothing to worry about on the income/employment front.

Pure theology

thuuuomas··on Commercial property deals in the US are starting to pick up at deep discounts
I love to live within smelling distance of the urban slaughterhouse. I love not knowing what chemicals may be wafting out of tanks buried, forgotten beneath my brownfield luxury condo.

Curating training data is an exercise in editorial judgement.
thuuuomas··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
Why is this relevant to the performance of a computer program? It makes sense to me that computer programs & humans should continue to be judged by different standards.
thuuuomas··on Physical cash is dying–and you don't need to be a conspiracist to worry
Every gas station in my area offers a lower cash price.

Have you checked out any of the minikanren logic programming environments people have implemented in scheme?

The Reasoned Schemer is an accessible introduction to that space if you’re not put off by the socratic-themed dialogue.

& the Barliman demo is still pretty exciting even after LLM codegen.

Wow, that’s insightful. I bet nobody’s ever examined contemporary capitalism thru the lens of the cellphone before!
thuuuomas··on The Knowledge Economy Is Over. Welcome to the Allocation Economy
Need someone to write something anthropological about crypto/ai/eacc utopian futurism & our society’s historic levels of stimulant/dissociative use.
thuuuomas··on Declinism
I consider this an over-correction that serves to benefit the status quo. I’m interested to hear why you think otherwise.

Here’s my pithy slogan advocating this -

If your safety systems fail, we pierce the corporate veil.

thuuuomas··on First look at Microsoft 365 Copilot
This tedious, snarky response is neither clever nor insightful.

Like, we get it - you resent your coworkers & consider them beneath you.

Hopefully, your unique, elite output keeps you employable for a few quarters longer than them.

I wonder if that Tesla that exploded at the Canadian border in NY prompted threats of regulatory action.
thuuuomas··on Murder is a pixel art ECS game engine in C#
Sounds like a good reason to promote the merits of your own project, instead of the tools you use.
thuuuomas··on Don't build AI products the way everyone else is doing it
LLM codegen should herald the death of the MVP. It’s time to solve problems well.
thuuuomas··on Food and Generative AI
> It doesn't matter what the cook thinks.

This is the fantasy of GenAI boosters stated concisely - that these statistical methods present a new objectivity that avoids the shortcomings of human subjectivity. Of course, these web-scraped models are distilled subjectivity in aggregate, subjectivity at scale. ChatGPT is made of people!

> that labour can be reallocated further up the value chain

Not in America - upskilling workers is too expensive.

Displaced workers are gonna break rocks in debtor’s prisons & the median voter already thinks they deserve it.

AI will bring mass downward mobility.

thuuuomas··on Labelling soya foods as ultra-processed is unhelpful
