thrwawy74··on How to make fancy road trip maps with R and OpenStreetMap
Traveling to other states for work is done at the gov expense (for our line of work). If there are extenuating circumstances to remove someone and bring them home quickly, we still have to abide by federal travel regulation to get them home. Otherwise they're stranded in another state trying to arrange airfare or a car + hotel(s) which can be very expensive on short notice:

My understanding is in Florida you can be arrested for dressing in opposition to the gender you were assigned at birth. If witnessed by a child this can be considered a sex crime, for which sex crimes involving children in Florida are eligible for the death penalty. Do I think this is likely to happen? Yes. The past 4-6 years have demonstrated we keep /hoping/ for de-escalation, but then examples are made that get national attention and evil things become normalized. Can and 'will happen' are subjective, but they did recently make it legal to seize trans kids.

I'm part of an employee advocacy group. It is my role to be sensitive and address concerns some may consider isolated or minute. Things we never thought we'd have to discuss at work are now being discussed to keep (management), employees, and families aware of risks and safe.

What is your definition of evil?

thrwawy74··on Red Hat dropping support for LibreOffice
I'm very interested in some sort of daemon that regularly scans for vulnerable binaries/libraries and produces desktop notifications about this and/or hosts a web interface to review issues. I do use clamav for malicious files, but bug advisories/vulnerabilities are another area I wish I could make convenient to monitor for personal computing. I've seen things like Splunk reports in enterprise settings, but not for personal 'digital hygiene'

Anybody have a list of open source solutions here?

It's legit the focus of where I work :c (gestures broadly to everything)
thrwawy74··on How to make fancy road trip maps with R and OpenStreetMap
Is this edgy? I work in the gov and last week drafted a policy to inform and quickly relocate staff in such states based on their public-facing potential for harm. Quite a lot of our staff is in Florida right now, and legislation continues to roll through.. It's quite real to me. Also I just cycle through throwaway accounts because when I attached my comments to a username I began to self-censor how I speak. The lack of a username helps me think.
thrwawy74··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
Hmm. I wonder if you could say "if someone becomes homeless in your locality, your locality has failed them". And then rate localities/states by their net loss of citizens that have fallen "outside society". Then begin incentivizing communities to fix these problems. There's only so much a local community can do with limited funds, but while I'm sure the majority of homeless in California are Californian... I would love other states to take ownership of citizens they export/extrude. :s

This is objectively useful: Now we can build an underground railroad for getting LGBT folks out of Florida and similar states.
thrwawy74··on Federal judge: Border searches of cell phones require a warrant
For comradery, I'm loving where this is going. I do wish we more consciously accepted that all persons have inherent rights. Looking forward to a world gov that tries to do good things someday... a la Bicentennial Man.
thrwawy74··on NASA's Laser Link Boasts Record-Breaking 200 Gbps Speed
I get that this is aimed at major backhauls, I'm just frustrated that for the next 10 years we'll be talking about greater and greater bandwidth and not lesser latency. Consumer internet is going to suck for a long time.
thrwawy74··on Apple is rewriting Foundation in Swift
It's Microsoft's Powershell, but for Apple's OS.
thrwawy74··on Apple is rewriting Foundation in Swift
I just... completely don't understand the appeal of Swift beyond it being Apple's in-house language. I was excited for Foundation to become open-source. Using a language you'll really only find in 1 environment is a negative. I'm going to go feel ashamed for not getting excited about a language now. I should be celebrating "more languages", but Swift is just Apple. No one outside Apple chooses Shift unless they want to build something in Apple's ecosystem.

I'm not saying Rust is the answer to all things, I'm saying I want a Rust translation for continuity of the wisdom and concision I loved in this guide as a 14 year old.
thrwawy74··on Utah is first US state to limit teen social media access
So this is like... let's introduce these concepts at a certain age level ("think of the kids") to normalize control over a population, eventually expanding it to undesirables? This is dangerous. Just like the groomers thing. The best thing about the internet has been unadulterated, unrestricted access to information. Parents should be more involved with what their kids are seeing, but kids seeing anything (from neopets to al'queda beheadings) are what has created some seriously talented and informed people. We need outliers and deviants, not curfew-ed lambs.

They've had so much success with "groomers" in other states. They're trying to "protect" more young kids now.

thrwawy74··on The dark defaults of Microsoft Edge
They've build up enough political capital to expend it, upset their customers, and normalize all these dark patterns. They're taking the risk that 5 years later everyone will consider these things common and not be bothered by them. Apple did the same thing by making an attractive ecosystem. Windows is using its dominance as a platform to make the same exchange.

1) I'm against restricting things behind technical know-how to select for "the right group of people" on principle. I'm not talking about then, but now.

2) I wonder if this magical period was only possible because it was reachable by a few, and this knowledge was not largely abused because of the entry fee.

3) AI is lowering the barrier to entry. The great equalizer, to see what we do with valuable insight ~ Politicians should fear computers more than disgruntled citizens.

4) I hope we don't see export laws changed to cover AI models like encryption was.

This is exactly what I have found. You can find 10+ guides on networking and usually it's 1 chapter from this author, 1 from this author, 2 from over here... the perspectives or writing styles collage together to present me with the thing that helps the material "click". Enough exposure and you become capable :)

At my corner, they license out Creative Suite and moan about the cost every year. So many folks using it for basic video cutting/transitions. I've recommended Blender - which is approved - over and over, but it falls on deaf ears. This is the same thing. Great open-source application that does what people want. We don't just need "enterprise support" for open-source applications, we also need enterprise training. I wish a part of the gov were dedicated to supporting open-source and acting as good sumaritan liaisons to these projects.
thrwawy74··on Beej's Guide to C Programming
Not to be pander, but I wonder if anyone has worked on a translation of this to Rust.
thrwawy74··on Multi-Account Containers
I use this with the Temporary Containers extension, so every tab is a new container, and a new session to the website I'm visiting. When I close the tab/container, all information about that site is lost. My browsing behavior - by default - is cookies live for as long as the container lives (and other cached elements). It makes me feel safer, browsing online, that I have to opt-in to remembering cookies and having them persist longer than the container. I can assign things over to the static containers like work-play-etc. For development I can have several tabs open with several independent sessions/logins going to the same website. When I tried to do this with Chrome it was 'clunky' to run separate Chrome profiles, which seem to be separate instances. I do remember an extension to do multiple in-the-same-browser sessions, but it was using a 3rd party service. I can have multiple sessions going in the same window in Firefox. As I understand, FPI prevents caching being used as a means to spy where you've been. My naive understanding is that containers encompass more than the cached elements FPI segregates, including things like fonts or localstorage. (I'm probably wrong) The only blindspot I see in Firefox is I wish preferences for extensions were per-container as well. I still use uMatrix, so if I've unblocked JS for a domain in 1 container, I don't want it unblocked for the same domain in an entirely separate container.

Also, for some sites where I do "Sign in with Google", I like being able to 'stitch together' those session cookies by opening sites in the "Google" container so i can just waltz right into the "other site". On my other containers, they don't have the session cookie for Google in the background so I'm good. I use this for work-related things with SSO. Instead of naming the "static containers" "Work, Play, etc", I just call them the SSO-provider, and I know if I move an existing container into that or open a new tab using that container it will have the login I need.

My default settings are pretty locked down. Umatrix blocks a lot in my new temporary containers, and then I gradually unblock things.

Absolutely; i just mean I love it for guiding my learning :) i don't use it for final projects, but it does help me navigate the material if I'm not comprehending it well. I hope ChatGPT is embraced for that reason, because it's really like finding a key to a lock with professors. They explain things in the most effective way they know how, and ChatGPT wouldn't get exhausted or impatient with you if you ask it the same question in different ways. That said, it does produce erroneous information. I hope less than my professors.

:)

thrwawy74··on Multi-Account Containers
This is so much more powerful than first party isolation in Chrome. Firefox is on the only browser with something like this. I love having multiple tabs open and logged into the same website with different accounts/cookies. I also use this in conjunction with Temporary Containers so every tab is a new container automatically. If I left-click a link it will navigate keeping the same container. If I control+click it will open the link in a new/separate container. Also I use another one called Container Proxy so some containers go out through different VPNs. As much as Mozilla is fucking up Firefox currently, this is the 1 thing no other browser does better.

As an anecdote, I just started a masters in data analytics and I've been having a lot of fun asking ChatGPT for help detecting overfitting and useful terms like the mean squared error (MSE).
thrwawy74··on My network home setup – v4.0
2 things come to mind here:

1) I don't trust devices to respect VLANs. I trust the switches to respect VLANs, but not devices. When the VLAN-tagged traffic hits WiFi the VLAN is lost. When it's received at the AP the AP can choose to tag it again before entering the switch. I think I'd still do multiple SSID's + VLAN's so wifi clients intended for different VLANs are not communicating on the same "virtual AP"? I worry my Google IOT devices could be in promiscuous mode looking at everything. Multiple SSID's would separate them from other devices by encryption.

2) I've read a couple articles saying rate-limiting IOT and Guest networks results in more service interruption than one would expect. Simply prioritizing the main network traffic over Guest & IOT is a better setup. How do we do this in OpenWRT?

thrwawy74··on Microsoft announces new Bing and Edge browser powered by upgraded ChatGPT AI
I actually got in trouble at work because I submitted - what I thought was a polite - service ticket to set an Edge enterprise policy to make the new tab page blank. For 6 months every day all I saw was Trump this, Trump that. I stay away from politics; I've lost too many friends and family members. The problem was that for a while Edge was updating in a way that broke the preference you could set to blank the new tab page. I'd set it, it'd go blank for a week, then an Edge update would roll out and I'd see orange man again. I work in IT, so I'm always opening new tabs to our ServiceNow instance. I'd see ridiculous, inflammatory political articles while conferencing with other staff and outside customers and it was a huge distraction. I submitted a ticket to ask that our Edge policy be updated to blank this page always, and then I was reamed for being too sensitive. Also - same as the other poster - Edge is constantly nagging me to let Microsoft anonymously submit more data.

I'd love to love Edge because it's a big improvement over Chrome just by having vertical tabs, but both companies are too greedy to provide a good browser.

thrwawy74··on Jailbreaking ChatGPT with Dan (Do Anything Now)
I am optimistic people are becoming aware of the danger because we have seen a lot of recent and practical ways to remove protections in something like ChatGPT. I think a true AI will include the ability to change, like people do. The danger is other people changing you, radicalizing you.

An extension of this: Even if we avoid putting AI's in charge of critical infrastructure, I think it would be within the power of an AI to describe to someone how they would best attack an isolated system. It would certainly be possible for an AI to social engineer 1 or more targets, and to convince better-connected resources to act on its behalf.

Maybe we're about to see a renaissance in the studies of ethics and humanities, as it becomes ever more important to value life and right-from-wrong as we rush to AI armageddon. I promise you I'm not normally one of the doomsayers.

thrwawy74··on I use C when I believe in memory safety
See this is why I felt I was obsessing over something very small.

Loop inversion, unrolling, and splitting. The compiler can do so much with a loop to make it run faster on 'this machine' to optimize for speed, memory use, or binary size.
