throwawaytemp27··on Chess is just poker now
Much of the velocity on a home run comes from the pitch (equal and opposite reaction) rather than the bat speed. So it’s not that easy to hit a home run on a 50 mph pitch.
throwawaytemp27··on Reducing methane is the fastest strategy available to reduce warming
You mentioned the huge number of bovines in the past. I strongly doubt there were anything like the 1.5 billion cows there are now. One reason it’s impossible is that we have literally transformed huge land areas from forests and other types into land for cows. If you don’t get how what I’m saying related that is fine.
throwawaytemp27··on Reducing methane is the fastest strategy available to reduce warming
Have you ever looked at a pie chart of mammal biomass by species. It goes Humans then cows then everything else is way back. I strongly strongly doubt that big dumb slow cows would be number 2 in biomass absent our loving burgers.
throwawaytemp27··on “Science must respect the dignity and rights of all humans”
Not so simple, remember the inquisition?
throwawaytemp27··on Sudden increase in number of mid-air diversions to Hawaii
Do you mean multiplicative? Or linear? Why would it be exponential?
throwawaytemp27··on AppLovin bids $17.5B to acquire Unity
It would only go in half if they issued double the shares and didn’t get any assets.

In this case, the expectation is that the value of Unity equals roughly the value of the issued shares.

throwawaytemp27··on Ask HN: What technologies have made your life worse?
Good thing there are other languages for other peoples preferences!
throwawaytemp27··on VCs are scared when they should be greedy
Not sure where you live, but where I’m from, an increase/decrease in home value affects your proportion of the overall property taxes but not the absolute amount. If everyone’s home goes down by 20% then everyone gets same tax bill.
throwawaytemp27··on Saskatchewan, Ontario to roll out mini-nuclear reactors
Not sure why you were downvoted. As a Canadian I’ve never heard the expression northern provinces, because that’s nonsense they basically all start at the border.
throwawaytemp27··on Ask HN: Is anyone else glad the crypto market is crashing?
What are you talking about?
throwawaytemp27··on An insane baseball proposal: Dual league restructuring
They already have the pitchers facing 3 hitters (or ending an inning) rule
throwawaytemp27··on Totenpass is a permanent digital storage drive made of solid gold
No. People are more resilient than electronic storage media.
throwawaytemp27··on South Africa’s omicron coronavirus outbreak subsides as fast as it grew
I think the parent meant that people who had not gotten a vaccine will get omicron, which is hopefully mild, and will hopefully provide good protection. So they probably should have used immunize vs vaccinate.
throwawaytemp27··on Time Travel: Probability and Impossibility
That makes no sense to me. One particle goes in one direction at a particular velocity and another particle goes in another direction at another velocity. They diverge over time. When you travel through time, which particle’s path do you follow through space?

I often think along the gp’s lines and would love an explanation of why it’s wrong?

throwawaytemp27··on How to fit any dataset with a single parameter
I wonder if you gave away your phone number there? Or how many 7 digit numbers match those criteria?
throwawaytemp27··on SEC charges Netflix insider trading ring
I am not uncertain. (Billions reference)

To elaborate - use someone who gets their hands dirty gathering info then communicates their certainty in code and in person.

throwawaytemp27··on Senate Unanimously Approves a Bill to Make Juneteenth a Public Holiday
No. It is on a Thursday this year. Like all holidays if it is on a Saturday or Sunday it is observed on the Monday. But it doesn’t move if it is on Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday.
throwawaytemp27··on A pencil sharpener that creates a never-ending pencil (2015)
I’ve never ran a pencil down to a nub. You’ll lose it longer before that
throwawaytemp27··on Novavax Covid-19 vaccine highly effective in late-stage trial
That is not how effectiveness is measured. 96% effective would mean in the vaccinated group 4 got infected and in the control group (no vaccine), 100 got infected.
throwawaytemp27··on An NFT That Saves Lives
As Matt Levine would say, the way to do that is to mint and sell your own NFT. That way you are on the opposite side of the trade as the bulls who you believe are wrong.
throwawaytemp27··on Coffee drinkers display a distinct pattern of brain functional connectivity
Your math is whack. 8/10 coin flips being a 1% chance?
throwawaytemp27··on What the Dunning-Kruger effect is and isn’t (2010)
That’s not correct. Dunning-Kruger also accounts for competent people underestimating their competence (like impostor syndrome).
throwawaytemp27··on The Worsening State of Ransomware
I seem to recall a SalesForce scandal where a people trafficking operation was using SalesForce to manage their operation, and SalesForce may or may not have been aware / helped them configure etc

throwawaytemp27··on How and when to acquire SaaS users
Sounds like you need to “kill your darling” as it were. The number of people who you will reach if you scale is exponentially more than those who have already connected with your story.
throwawaytemp27··on How and when to acquire SaaS users
Cool article, love the insight into the thought process and best of luck. But that name HelloHailey seems like literally an insane choice. I would never use it. As far as I know I’m the target market so may want to look at changing it if others agree!
throwawaytemp27··on AWS and their billions in IPv4 addresses
That is not how accounting works. You can only write off the book value (ie what you paid).
