throwaway5959··on Social Security now expected to run short on funds in 2035, one year later
Quite a few of them will be dead by 2035. The earliest boomers were born in 1946, that’s 89 years old. They’ll have been collecting benefits for decades by then.

They’re also delaying retirement age, which is effectively a benefit cut.

Over 92% of Americans have health insurance. The vast majority DO have access to healthcare.

The real lesson here is don’t piss of Tim Sweeney. Dude just can’t let it go.

The management class has grown fat in the US. Layoffs at my company haven’t impacted management AT ALL.

The Virtual Boy final form.
throwaway5959··on Apple introduces M4 chip
It means a lot to me, because cutting power consumption in half for millions of devices means we can turn off power plants (in aggregate). It’s the same as lightbulbs; I’ll never understand why people bragged about how much power they were wasting with incandescents.

Hopefully in the Mac Mini at WWDC.
throwaway5959··on MIT abandons requirement of DEI statements for hiring and promotions
Well now that that’s sorted, maybe we can start fixing real problems with higher Ed.
throwaway5959··on State Farm announces major change affecting tens of thousands households in CA
Then people just won’t be able to drive. I think a lot of people don’t see how precarious some people’s lives are now, even with what would have been decent incomes five years ago.
throwaway5959··on State Farm announces major change affecting tens of thousands households in CA
Eventually you’re going to see a lot of people just driving without insurance (car insurance is soaring as well as home insurance).

So why is their software still being sold in the US?
throwaway5959··on Tesla retreats from one-piece "gigacasting" manufacturing process
His $55 billion pay package would pay $100k per year for the 14k employees he just laid off for the next 40 years.

I’m surprised the stock is still north of $100.

throwaway5959··on Tesla conducting more layoffs, including entire Supercharger team
Right? Even if they did somehow take over all traditional carmakers, the margins on those businesses suck. It’d just scale a shitty business (making cars).
throwaway5959··on Tesla conducting more layoffs, including entire Supercharger team
> It will take some time to get there and when it does it will destroy the retirements of those Tesla stockholders most active on Twitter.

Well at least there’s that silver lining: a lot less noise in the EV space on YouTube.

Because frankly Google and the open web is so bogged down by ads that it’s become unusable. Try visiting any news site or a site like Fandom. Some sites I can’t even read because the ads take up the whole page on mobile and I can’t close them. Ads just totally ruin it. Meanwhile, with ChatGPT, I can ask it questions and it just gives me an answer. It’s not perfect, but neither are search results.
throwaway5959··on I Witnessed the Future of AI, and It's a Broken Toy
I hope they’re successful. We need more fun gadgets. Phones, tablets and computers are all so boring and functional now.
throwaway5959··on How the right U.S. chip strategy can keep Taiwan free
Do you like using computers and phones? If so an independent Taiwan is aligned with your interests. Unless you’re suggesting that the US is the reason why China wants to take over Taiwan, which is a level of contorted logic to blame the US I haven’t seen yet.
throwaway5959··on How the right U.S. chip strategy can keep Taiwan free
Why is it always the U.S.’s responsibility for this kind of stuff? I’m supportive of an independent Taiwan, but it’d be great if Europe and other parts of the world that benefit from their independence could step up and help out.
throwaway5959··on Google lays off its Python team
A waste of talent not of cash.
throwaway5959··on Google lays off its Python team
All SWEs at Google are well compensated. Not all of them would be a good fit for maintaining Python.
throwaway5959··on Hertz is ditching even more electric cars
Yes, fire them and hire better help, even if it costs more. Giving people a raise doesn’t automatically make them better.
throwaway5959··on Hertz is ditching even more electric cars
You have that backwards. Better performance/value => higher pay. Why should we pay people more if they suck at their job? They should be fired.
throwaway5959··on Google layoffs hit Flutter team
Because outside of deploying your app as a web application there aren’t a lot of other ways to get your app onto Android devices aside from… developing Android apps.
throwaway5959··on Claiming high user satisfaction, IRS will decide on renewing free tax site
Just wait until you see how many people don’t read another book for the rest of their lives after high school/college.
throwaway5959··on Claiming high user satisfaction, IRS will decide on renewing free tax site
TurboTax. It’s really that simple. They pay a very small amount in bribes (er lobbying), and they ruin what could be a very good thing for millions of Americans.
throwaway5959··on Google lays off its Python team
They were maintaining Python itself, likely very well (as one would expect) compensated. It’d be a waste to have these devs do product development.
throwaway5959··on Google lays off its Python team
Sundar take a pay cut yet?
throwaway5959··on Google lays off its Python team
They built a prototype (probably in Rails, lol). Thousands of people built Twitter, including many who have never written a line of code in their lives.
throwaway5959··on Google layoffs hit Flutter team
People have to stop building on Google software/apis. You’re just doing it to yourself at this point if you have any other alternative (obviously Android isn’t included in this).
