throwaway562if1··on A federal judge sides with Anthropic in lawsuit over training AI on books
For that matter, how dare the government fine me for dumping waste in the river, and stop me from employing minors? Don't they know it will ruin the economy?
throwaway562if1··on Honda conducts successful launch and landing of experimental reusable rocket
Electron is an 18m orbital delivery rocket (14.5m+payload without the optional third stage).
throwaway562if1··on Tell HN: Help restore the tax deduction for software dev in the US (Section 174)
It was passed in 2017 to go into effect in 2023. Trump now wants to suspend it until 2029. You may notice that in both cases it is being passed under a Republican-controlled executive but goes into effect under the next administration. This is the point.
throwaway562if1··on Why are banks still getting authentication so wrong?
Because without thoroughly-enshrined protections for identities, an e-ID system provides an avenue for the government to effectively de-person undesirables at will, by removing their ability to use banks, sign contracts, access healthcare, etc.
throwaway562if1··on Why are banks still getting authentication so wrong?
The current US administration is known for illegally deporting permanent residents and has stated intent to deport natural-born citizens. It should be self-evident why a centralized ID system under the control of the executive branch is a terrible idea.
throwaway562if1··on Anubis saved our websites from a DDoS attack
I am still unable to pass CF validation on my desktop (sent to infinite captcha loop hell). Nowadays I just don't bother with any website that uses it.
throwaway562if1··on General Motors Is Banned from Selling Driving Behavior Data for 5 Years
They keep all the profits and can still sell "anonymized" data. Surely this chilling precedent will have other corporations shivering in fear.
throwaway562if1··on Luigi Mangione's account has been renamed on Stack Overflow
There is a certain irony in this, given that such behaviour (demonstrating that rule of law applies only to the peons) is what has so inflamed the public in support of Mangione.
throwaway562if1··on Autodesk deletes old forum posts suddenly
In case this isn't trolling, it's valuable to any users who have a question that was previously answered on the forums, and to any users who invested time and energy answering said questions. Neither of these show up as a revenue stream, but instead impact customer retention and onboarding - the absence of community support is a major negative when making a purchasing decision as a new customer.
throwaway562if1··on McKinsey and Company to pay $650M for role in opioid crisis
And so we allow people to trivially circumvent the law by shielding themself behind a shell corporation, and never are consequences seen.
throwaway562if1··on McKinsey and Company to pay $650M for role in opioid crisis
It's trivial to find who to blame - just follow the money. Hit the investors with sentences proportional to their stake of ownership, and just like magic, executives who enable criminal behavior will become rather less popular and internal oversight much more so. Of course this will never happen, since the lack of culpability is the point.
throwaway562if1··on How Japanese black companies oppress workers (2014)
"Not everyone works at black companies" and "nobody works at black companies" are very different statements. People going home at 6 is evidence for the former, not the latter.
throwaway562if1··on US probes Tesla's Full Self-Driving software after fatal crash
AIUI the numbers are for accidents where FSD is in control. Which means if it does a turn into oncoming traffic and the driver yanks the wheel or slams the brakes 500ms before collision, it's not considered a crash during FSD.
throwaway562if1··on Correcting the record for Continue and PearAI
Ideally it would have a section on next steps and how YC will prevent such events in the future, but definitely preferable over a corporate nonapology.
throwaway562if1··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
Considering how much negative publicity companies see every time one of they require RTO, and yet not one has published metrics? They absolutely don't have any.
throwaway562if1··on Firmware update hides a device’s Bluetooth fingerprint
Only within one second if fingerprinting can be done from a single data point. If it takes 10,000 beacons to identify a device with reasonable certainty, doubling that count is significant.
throwaway562if1··on Judge dismisses DMCA copyright claim in GitHub Copilot suit
Let's be honest: It will be legal if you're a $3 trillion company, and not if you're not.
throwaway562if1··on ChatGPT is biased against resumes with credentials that imply a disability
I expect this, much like racial bias in many AI applications (e.g. facial recognition), is considered a feature by the companies using ChatGPT to screen resumes - it gives enough plausible deniability to dodge a lawsuit.

Anyone want to bet it discriminates on gender too?

throwaway562if1··on OpenAI departures: Why can’t former employees talk?
You haven't worked with many contracts, have you? Unenforceable clauses are the norm, most people are willing to follow them rather than risk having to fight them in court.
throwaway562if1··on The Downfall of DeviantArt
There really aren't many major platforms left for artists at this point - DeviantArt and ArtStation have both dove down the AI hole, Twitter needs an account to view now, that leaves what, Pixiv and Tumblr?
throwaway562if1··on Literacy in the U.S. has fallen to 79%, down from 96% in the late 1980's
This claims that literacy in the US in 2024 was 79%. Unless I am missing something, the latter half of this post ("down from 96% in the late 1980's") is absent from the linked article, and is seemingly entirely unsourced.
throwaway562if1··on MTA board votes to approve new $15 toll to drive into Manhattan
Presumably the toll is per vehicle, so carpooling already divides the fee among the carpoolers.
throwaway562if1··on Boeing withdraws bid for safety exemption for Boeing 737 MAX 7
Certified variants are currently flying under an Airworthiness Directive. The requested exemption would have allowed the MAX 7 and MAX 10 to be certified despite the EIA flaw, with Boeing having until 2026 to design and certify a permanent fix (not sure about the deadline for actual implementation of said fix).
throwaway562if1··on June 30th, 2024, will bring the End of Life (EOL) of CentOS Linux (2023)
Red Hat had given a lifecycle for CentOS 8 with an EOL in 2029. IBM acquired Red Hat, and promptly announced they were reneging on this schedule. Given that the primary draw of CentOS/RHEL are long-term, reliable, well-supported, stable operating systems, users were... displeased.

CentOS stream is primarily intended to onboard users onto RHEL, which is undesirable when nobody trusts Red Hat to keep their word now.

throwaway562if1··on Cursorless is alien magic from the future
The same reason pilots say "fower" instead of "four" and soldiers "foxtrot" instead of "eff" - a good spelling alphabet is much clearer and ambiguity-free than English letter names. Getting into speculation here, I expect the reason they use their own alphabet instead of something like the NATO phonetic alphabet is a matter of use case: unlike radio communications, transcription provides immediate, unambiguous feedback (the letters show up on your screen) and mistakes are low-impact and easily corrected, so a degree of clarity is sacrificed in exchange for improved speed.
throwaway562if1··on Safety benefits of roundabouts
Having lived in Boston and other areas with roundabouts, I can with confidence assert that this is a Boston traffic design problem, not a roundabout one.
throwaway562if1··on Colorado Law Would Charge Owners for Driving Giant Trucks and SUVs
Note that for an appropriate relative comparison between individual and mass transit, the appropriate measure is per passenger mile. (For a truly accurate comparison, you should also normalize driving regimes; cities, where buses generally operate, have a much higher rate of incidents per mile.)

For an absolute comparison, buses are responsible for 2% of pedestrian deaths, vs approx. 90% for cars (per the same FARS data).
