throwaway55421··on Remote Work Is Failing Young Employees
Nah, I want to work with actual people.

I have literally zero interest in a Zoom call to someone who's in the same town as me, I'd rather jump on the bus or train and see them.

I don't see that as being increased friction because to me travel and seeing people is _better_ than sitting in front of a screen for longer - it provides a welcome break and helps me to see more about the world.

I just find the entire thing odd. Like, being in the pub is better than on a phone call. Being at a theme park is better than being in a sim. Being at work is better than being at virtual work.

The whole situation is absurd to me, like a bad movie plot.

So you can _apply_ for permission to take part in everyday life.

Great. It's a no from me.

throwaway55421··on Remote Work Is Failing Young Employees
I'm 30 and quit the field indefinitely because working from home feels like an enormous backward step.

I spent most of my childhood in my bedroom grinding to make a better life and "get out" of the small town I grew up in.

I got there, and after a few short years the world decided to retreat to their bedrooms.

I enjoy riding the Tube, or cycling, or walking. I enjoy driving too. I enjoy seeing people on busy high streets, I enjoy chatting / playing card games over lunch at work, etc.

I never made work my entire social circle, my colleagues were always colleagues, I have other avenues for that.

There's also the whole "corona theater" element, with people pretending that they don't want to come in because they'll die or whatever, which might have made sense for a month or two in March last year but now is just a sign that you're dealing with someone who is either deliberately lying or just has no understanding of the situation.

I genuinely think that WFH for the vast majority is just a step towards the dystopia of having people live in endless tower blocks somewhere, plugged into a wall with a VR headset and a nutrition drip. It'd be more efficient and convenient.

But I don't want to be efficient. I could maximize my efficiency by jumping off a bridge.

That ain't life.

throwaway55421··on Tracking Covid-19 variant B.1.1.529
Right, so when do we start?

I don't see coronavirus going anywhere.

throwaway55421··on Tracking Covid-19 variant B.1.1.529
Sure, but despite global leaders knowing that this would be a forever thing, barely anyone has even begun to train more healthcare professionals.
throwaway55421··on Tracking Covid-19 variant B.1.1.529
Except our current vaccines only act as a reduction in severity/spread of disease.

We could have 100% worldwide vaccination including animal reservoirs and still get mutations.

There is no easy out here unless we develop sterilizing immunity. Life is just a bit more dangerous now and that's that.

throwaway55421··on New German government calls for European ban on biometric mass surveillance
Yes.
throwaway55421··on New German government calls for European ban on biometric mass surveillance
Non issue, if you are vaccinated and not old you will not die to 3dp.

If you're not vaccinated and not old you will not die to 1-2dp.

It's finished, done, boring now.

throwaway55421··on New German government calls for European ban on biometric mass surveillance
Yeah, no, being logged everywhere you go is not "small".
throwaway55421··on New German government calls for European ban on biometric mass surveillance
Why does anyone care about cases?

If I get corona I get a bad cold.

Non issue for the vaccinated below 70.

throwaway55421··on New German government calls for European ban on biometric mass surveillance
Until it auto updates.

If it even matches the source as is. Play Store and App Store are non reproducible.

throwaway55421··on New German government calls for European ban on biometric mass surveillance
Oh do pipe down.

If I am in Germany, I can choose not to show a QR code if I _never go out_.

Thankfully I live in the UK with none of this nonsense _and better outcomes_.

throwaway55421··on New German government calls for European ban on biometric mass surveillance
Yet scanning a QR code which uniquely identifies an individual to get into any venue is totally fine because we didn't update the source code yet and so it's not phoning home this week.

Well, if the source (of the scanner) is even legit, since the app stores provide no way to verify that anyway.

throwaway55421··on Greening of the Earth Mitigates Surface Warming (2020)
My argument is that eating vegetarian does not reduce land use for agriculture.

It does to first order. Then we just end up with more mouths - like what happened after the Haber-Bosch process.

throwaway55421··on Greening of the Earth Mitigates Surface Warming (2020)
Evidence? It's mathematical, not scientific. Derivable from first principles.

I can eat meat as much as I want provided another 7 billion people don't also do the same.

The issue is with the number of people, not the activity. Literally any use of land is a bad idea at that scale, we end up in rabbit hutches.

throwaway55421··on Wall Street grudgingly allows remote work as bankers dig in
I just wish I could find a 100% normal in person job. Like I had in Feb 2020.

I don't want to work from home.

I don't want to interact with others through a screen. Zoom calls are like torture to me.

I don't want to spend all of my time in the same place.

I want to go to work on the Tube, have lunch and go to the pub with my colleagues, and then go home.

I think video work is another thing we'll just regret in 10 years time, like how social media and the Internet fucked up communities. A sugar high for some, and then a crash.

throwaway55421··on Greening of the Earth Mitigates Surface Warming (2020)
Nah.

The obvious endgame there is that you reduce the amount of land required per person and then increase the persons, ending up with the same land requirement.

Then we look for the next thing to cut.

I'll just keep my current quality of life and outcompete others for resources, thanks. Carbon tax pls.

throwaway55421··on Boards are dangerous to founder/CEOs
If you give up your 51% share, sure.
throwaway55421··on Overloaded: Is there simply too much culture?
There is a difference between what you describe, and "being cultured", which is an attempt to elevate one's self above others.

UK class system stuff vs. being in a subculture on a forum. "The" culture, vs some shared interest.

throwaway55421··on Overloaded: Is there simply too much culture?
The Guardian aims at a particular kind of person who essentially spends their entire life in artistic theory and not the real world. They derive their worth from being able to quote at each other.

For those people I'm sure it does feel like an enormous struggle.

If you watch for enjoyment rather than as an attempt at gaining social cachet then it's fine.

throwaway55421··on Ask HN: I feel so shallow and dumb when I see what other smart people are doing
Doesn't matter.

You are you. No-one else is you, and you are no-one else.

throwaway55421··on Taproot, Bitcoin’s long-anticipated upgrade, has activated
There is no future tense here.

Bitcoin is designed to be fungible - it's digital cash.

throwaway55421··on There may be a steep privacy cost if you park here
If people don't park, and this is more than a minority use case, there probably shouldn't even be parking, because it's probably a massive waste of space.

None of what you've written sounds convenient, it sounds like a massive pain in the arse. If I do have to pay, I'd rather just stick some cash in a machine on the way out, paying for the time I used then and there and making it impossible to be fined or get stuck messing about with an app when something inevitably goes down.

Cashless systems for physical places should honestly be illegal, it would fix a lot of this scammy nonsense.

throwaway55421··on There may be a steep privacy cost if you park here
I agree that the better solution would be to just scrap the parking.

I don't think urban parking makes sense (other than parking in/outside of homes).

throwaway55421··on Will real estate ever be normal again?
Yep. I live there and it's great. Love the transport links.

If I were mentally handicapped and stuck working in a supermarket earning a tenner an hour I'd have long since flipped the table, though - playing when the deck is stacked against you makes no sense.

In the 1960s we had a system that allowed the majority to live in reasonable conditions. Nowadays it's get rich or die trying and no-one seems to really see a problem with this.

throwaway55421··on Will real estate ever be normal again?
Workers rights were not generally gained by moving jobs, it was unionization and protest.

Moving house doesn't change the market unless everyone else does it, and even then, the major benefit would come from something like large numbers of people agreeing not to max bid (i'm not suggesting that such a thing would be realistic, but it's an example of unionization)

throwaway55421··on There may be a steep privacy cost if you park here
I already address this in my earlier comment, there is an obvious distinction between urban and rural locations.

If you're not paying more for your shopping in an urban location then this is almost always going to be because the costs are amortized over all the stores in a chain.

There is no free lunch, someone ends up paying more than they should somewhere.

throwaway55421··on There may be a steep privacy cost if you park here
If it's walkable then the car drivers are paying more than they should because rent is bundled in to the prices.

There's no free lunch either way here.
