throwaway3699··on Valve Steam Deck
Cmon, don't gatekeep games. There are inputs, outputs and challenge. Fits the classical definition.
throwaway3699··on Valve Steam Deck
It can be about that, but it's also about the low end, the modders and weird hybrid devices like this.
throwaway3699··on Windows 365 Cloud PC
Outsourcing something that is not a core competency (like running virtual machines) is cheaper and safer for all but the largest organisations.
throwaway3699··on Windows 365 Cloud PC
The idea is that your "personal" computer at work follows you from the office to a laptop, not that this is for consumers (I hope).

Malicious compliance is a great strategy when done right.
throwaway3699··on Twitter sees jump in govt demands to remove content of reporters, news outlets
Moderation a conversation implies somebody is getting threatened with their comment being deleted or account suspended. That is censorship. Moderation is just the brand friendly term for it.

With great time, and care. Discord managed to do this in only 4 years, so it is possible. The cynical side of me says that a distributed social network, by definition, doesn't have the ability to run large marketing campaigns like Discord.
throwaway3699··on Study finds 83% of software developers feel burnout
It's worth mentioning that this is a myth. Invisible maintenance work on old products can be very impactful if done correctly.
throwaway3699··on Study finds 83% of software developers feel burnout
Part of the issue is the constant churn, not just change. It's change for change's sake, and more broadly, complexity for it's own sake.

Take microservices for example. Classic cargo culting development of what Google and Facebook are doing, but usually without a dedicated staffing team of hundreds. No wonder devs are burning out if they have to learn how to run a k8s cluster where a simple binary would've sufficed.

throwaway3699··on Google and Microsoft have opaque and unpredictable ad moderation
If it looks like a scam, then false positives are unavoidable. These companies are trying to protect average people from being scammed on their services, and I would honestly prefer they keep doing this. I do not want to spend hours on the phone to the bank with a shaken grandparent again (after they get cryptoscammed).

Claiming they are against "privacy-first services" is just creating a victim narrative where one does not exist. As people keep saying here on this very website, these platforms do not owe you a microphone.

Also, just one bit of advice, most developer types will have adblockers, so you're really not going to have a great time trying to target them with adverts.

throwaway3699··on EU withheld a study that shows piracy doesn't hurt sales (2017)
As far as I'm aware, it's just Google Search underneath but with telly included. I doubt they'll charge for inclusion but do expect ads.
throwaway3699··on Instagram Has Become SkyMall
Instagram is a closed source, proprietary app developed by a megacorp. Freedom has nothing to do with anything on that app. Or so I'm told...
throwaway3699··on Instagram Has Become SkyMall
I'm not a puritan by any means, but literally millions of kids use this app. It's not a good idea to have these things mixed.
throwaway3699··on Behind the scenes, AWS Lambda
My point is that the industry really hasn't moved on from the old LAMP stack if it's been replaced by a single company. When it truly comes down to it, the day-to-day tools are not ours if they aren't open.

And if deploying a lambda function on my own hardware is vastly more complex, then the tools haven't really changed, they just got outsourced.

There are a bunch of semi-standards like Serverless Framework and Knative, but nothing concrete.

throwaway3699··on Behind the scenes, AWS Lambda
Lambda is a proprietary solution that only works for people on AWS. Linux is open, and I just need to put it on a box. How do I install the AWS Lambda stack on a standard Linux box?
throwaway3699··on 80% of my traffic is excluded from Google Analytics
No, of course not. On a small website, the bots are such a huge part of the logs that the whole exercise becomes an attempt at extracting understanding from random noise. It's why those visitor count widgets died out years ago.
throwaway3699··on Google Internal Comics
Google used to give away phones as part of the "holiday gift". Basically the suggestion is to give the phones away if they're not sold.
throwaway3699··on Google Internal Comics
He left a few days ago, but as far as I'm aware, nobody is going to get fired for a comic at a well functioning company.
throwaway3699··on Neurons unexpectedly encode information in the timing of their firing
If we want to reach AGI within the lifetime of the universe, and quantum effects are required for consciousness [within the lifetime etc...], it stands to reason we'd need quantum computers.
throwaway3699··on A call to minimize distraction and respect users’ attention (2013)
Digital Wellbeing on Android was one major example of something that seemed to have come from this. I believe iOS also built something similar.
throwaway3699··on The cost of the “new way to message on instagram” (2020)
Agree personally, I just mean the general population doesn't care anymore.
throwaway3699··on The cost of the “new way to message on instagram” (2020)
People stopped caring about Windows being dominant years ago. Mac and Linux became competitive for those who wanted it, mobile ate the world, and Windows only dominates in Office and gaming, neither of which are apparently worth fighting over.

If memory serves, this presentation was created at Google years ago by Tristan Harris, who also had a huge part to play in The Social Dilemma.
throwaway3699··on How useful was the Netflix Prize challenge for Netflix?
TikTok has two advantages:

- lots of short content

- viewing metrics to the second

Within an hour of usage you could've browsed through hundreds of TikToks, and allowed them to classify many tastes for you.

You'd need to sit in front of Netflix for an entire month for them to get the same amount of signal.

throwaway3699··on DoD cancels $10B Jedi contract
Maybe the DoD protests at Google pushed them away?
throwaway3699··on Pro-Trump social media app hacked on launch day as half million sign up
Sure, but aren't you implying there no female developers that would work on this software?

I'm sure AT&T was a very diverse place when Bell invented the telephone. Same with early Microsoft or Google.

The likely answer is lack of funding. The median app is very poorly made.

throwaway3699··on Students flee field as computer 'fad fades' (1987)
I was able to build a decent intuition in both maths and programming before going to university. It's not something specific to higher ed, just experience.
throwaway3699··on Is Alexandra Elbakyan in real trouble this time?
It used to be, but recently I've been able to view Sci Hub again.
throwaway3699··on I do not agree with Github's use of copyrighted code as training for Copilot
Are people angry at copyright violations, or Microsoft? Copyright and patents have their place, but they've clearly overreached long ago.
