throwaway2990··on A brief history of web development, and why your framework doesn't matter
> React (ie virtual dom) is a beauty in this regard and if you don’t use it, you would have a hard time creating any gui with a certain level of difficulty

Anyone who didn’t grow up building stuff prior to 2010 would have difficulty.

we don’t need react in 2024. And it’s only making things worse now. Not better.

It’s a guideline not to. It’s not a hard rule or forbidden.

> I'm not sure if most browsers under iOS already use blink by the way, as far as I know they are still almost all running WebKit.

Google last year stated they are working on bringing blink to iOS. They called it an experiment but obviously knew iOS was being forced to open up. So it’s happening (not yet but they are working on it). IE6 all over again.

throwaway2990··on People are bailing on Safari after DMA makes changing defaults easier
So you’re saying Google does not control the rendering engine and these competitor browsers have contributed functionality to the core rendering engine or added additional rendering functionality that isn’t in chromium?
throwaway2990··on People are bailing on Safari after DMA makes changing defaults easier
How many of the alternatives DON’T use chromium ?

HN driven development! It’s so true.
throwaway2990··on Twenty years maintaining the WiX Toolset
Why because your belovered maintainer is hostile and you can cope?

There are tons of maintainers out there who have poor communication skills who don’t care if you submit a pull request fixing a bug, or raise an issue detailing a bug. They will shrug you off and make you feel like OSS is a waste of time.

Get over yourself and stop getting on your knees to suck him off like he’s some god.

throwaway2990··on Twenty years maintaining the WiX Toolset
When a maintainer doesn’t want something that’s totally fine if he doesn’t be a cunt about it.
throwaway2990··on Twenty years maintaining the WiX Toolset
When you try to contribute to a project and the maintainer just says something isn’t a bug and won’t tell you why and blows you off. They are hostile. So while he’s built an awesome tool. He’s obviously a difficult person.
throwaway2990··on Twenty years maintaining the WiX Toolset
Great product. Hostile maintainer.
throwaway2990··on A first look at Europe's alternative iPhone app stores
> Apple's total control of all aspects of the iPhone platform is harmful to consumers in a way that is not at all obvious, especially not to the less technologically literate.

This would only be true if Android did not exist.

But the reality is it’s not harmful at all.

throwaway2990··on Free shipping isn’t really free (2020)
lol sounds like ebay. Buy a card for $1. They want $35 for shipping. Arrives in an envelope with a $2 stamp.
throwaway2990··on Facebook let Netflix see user DMs, quit streaming to keep Netflix happy
Of course I post on a throwaway. HN is full of idiots who downvote cos it goes against what they believe in.

Fact is Facebook has been advertising using user data on messenger and WhatsApp. Some believe it’s not possible and some theorise that they analysis the message on the device and send metadata over.

But it doesn’t change the fact Facebook is in control of the whole pipeline.

throwaway2990··on Backdoor in upstream xz/liblzma leading to SSH server compromise
Haha yes they do. Everyone stores their 2fa in 1Password so once that’s stolen by a key longer they’re fucked.

SMS is fine on most countries. It’s just America is dumb and allows number transfers to anyone.
throwaway2990··on Facebook let Netflix see user DMs, quit streaming to keep Netflix happy
There’s been many stories over the years of people being advertised to from things mentioned in what’s meant to be a private conversation.

This is true. I bought it because photoshop kept crashing on Mac. And I got tired of watching filters take effect in Lightroom.
