throwaway2046··on Wine 10.16 (Dev) – Run Windows Applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and macOS
Wine has seen a massive improvement since the introduction of WoW64, and now it apparently supports 16-bit programs too. Many thanks to the Wine devs who made this possible.
throwaway2046··on Toybox: All-in-one Linux command line
I really appreciate Toybox for its clean codebase and permissive license, hopefully it reaches feature parity with Busybox in the future. Version 0.8.13 is long overdue.
throwaway2046··on Heavy codes of conduct are unnecessary for open source projects
You can address the contents of the article and the views expressed by the author directly without resorting to ad hominem.
throwaway2046··on Heavy codes of conduct are unnecessary for open source projects
> marginalized groups, who may have faced abuse or violence in other spaces

Can you cite examples of users facing abuse or violence while contributing to a tech project? And how exactly does a CoC guarantee the safety you mentioned?

> when another community member refuses to work with you

Members are free to choose who to work with regardless of whether a CoC exists or not.

> belittles your work constantly

Your work may not be up to the project's standards and anyone pointing that out may hurt your feelings, and that's fine. You can't expect project maintainers to coddle each contributor when there's work to be done. Most CoCs are at odds with that because they value contributors' feelings over clear communication that helps a project advance.

> there is nothing to be done

You could communicate your grievances to the project maintainers directly, but you're not guaranteed a reply even with a CoC. In fact I'd argue that with a CoC it's easier for maintainers to dismiss criticism by labeling it as "non welcoming" or "non inclusive" or any other loose emotionally-driven term.

throwaway2046··on The Other Linux Logo
It's a nice minimalist design, but I think it still doesn't scale down as well as the Apple and Windows logos. The logo needs to be simple yet more expressive somehow, perhaps only focusing on Tux's head?
throwaway2046··on Bazel and Glibc Versions
Is musl not an option? It's best to avoid glibc altogether if possible.
throwaway2046··on Everything I know about good API design
You can find the history of API/ABI changes in glibc since 2011 in this table:

https://abi-laboratory.pro/?view=timeline&l=glibc

Granted it hasn't been updated since 2023, you can still see the trend with removed symbols in each version.

throwaway2046··on I ported pigz from Unix to Windows
Could you elaborate on that?
throwaway2046··on Getting forked by Microsoft
> somehow the GPL seems to have gone out of vogue.

Which GPL is that? The GPL 2 and 3 are incompatible with each other, making cross contribution between different FOSS projects practically impossible. The "v2 or later" licensing model does nothing to remedy the problem. See Rob Landley's talk on this topic.

throwaway2046··on KOReader: Open-Source eBook Reader
I looked into building the emulator for KOReader and it requires CMake, Meson, and autotools... Why are 3 different build systems necessary?
throwaway2046··on Synthesizing Music from JSON
It's amazing to see FOSS music trackers still being made, each time a bit more modernized. Although the new "single instrument tracks" model may take a while to click for me, I think it may allow for more dynamic songs.

P.S. what's the license for pl_synth? I couldn't find one on the repo.

throwaway2046··on Wine 10.0 RC4 – Run Windows Applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and macOS
The new WoW64 mode seems to have matured quite a bit since 9.0
throwaway2046··on Ubuntu Hoping to Remove Qt 5 Before Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
For those who don't know the reference: https://blog.hiler.eu/win32-the-only-stable-abi/
throwaway2046··on Winamp removed "No forking" restriction from license
Audacious supports classic Winamp skins so if you're only after the aesthetics just use that. Alternatively you may be able to run the original Winamp through Wine.
throwaway2046··on PeerTube 6.3
The first one is such a simple feature yet I find it crucial for all music/podcast listeners. Not every video needs to be watched.
throwaway2046··on Show HN: Webaggr – handpicked collection of landing page design
Out of all the other sans typefaces on Google Fonts, Inter is arguably the cleanest looking followed closely by Archivo. I'll take Inter over any of the "fancier" fonts any day.
throwaway2046··on TR1X: Open-source re-implementation of Tomb Raider 1
It seems that TR1X is a game decompilation project while OpenLara is a new engine created from scratch.
throwaway2046··on Ask HN: HN-type platform with in-house content, would you use it?
As a reader I wouldn't mind another source of articles. It surely wouldn't replace HN but more variety is always welcome.

I'm curious as to how you will handle content moderation; will everything be vote-based or will there be free/paid moderators?

throwaway2046··on Zelda 64 Recompiled: A Revolution in N64 Native Ports for PC
> A GPU supporting Direct3D 12.0 (Shader Model 6) or Vulkan 1.2 is required to run this project

This seems to be a rather high requirement for what is essentially a 1990s video game, could you elaborate on why this is needed?

throwaway2046··on Disqualified (1954)
Seconding this idea. IA especially is an astronomical gold mine and its benefits to humanity as a whole are immeasurable, I'm sure it could use non-monetary help beside the usual donation campaigns.
throwaway2046··on Hey Google, what happened to all the fun?
Consider publishing on F-Droid; the platform is open and decentralized, plus it's already gaining some traction outside tech-centric communities.
throwaway2046··on Ask HN: what are examples of successful "open-source alternatives"?
VLC comes to mind. It's been years since I last saw anyone using any other media player.
throwaway2046··on Marion Stokes, the Woman Who Spent over 30 Years Recording Every Minute of US TV
AFAIK all the Marion Stokes tapes were digitized at the Internet Archive after her passing:

throwaway2046··on The Backrooms of the Internet Archive
Got a link to those photos? Sounds like an interesting story, whether true or not.
throwaway2046··on What autoconf got right
>Would be really interesting to see some actual stats about this though.

Drew DeVault did some tests on this subject and published the results here:

throwaway2046··on What autoconf got right
>One additional point: autotools are bootstrappable without going all the way up to C++ (CMake, ninja) or Python (meson).

You do need Perl though.

throwaway2046··on Enthusiast gets Windows XP running on an i486
I immediately recognized the name Dietmar, he was a huge member on the Reboot forum doing all sorts of incredible projects. From creating tiny Windows installations to live booting Windows... It's great to see him still going!
