throwaway1777··on Rust has been forked to the Crab Language
This is the power of the media and why people fight over it so much. Whenever you see content you should not only question the content itself but also ask “why am I seeing this now”?
throwaway1777··on I criticized Amazon’s policies in a blog – their lawyers have subpoenaed me
One of the most toxic work cultures in tech
throwaway1777··on How to Stare at Your Phone Without Losing Your Soul
I disagree that it’s a problem and with your analogy. The internet is more like a giant sprawling suburb where one house is studying advanced maths and the other is throwing a keg party. Sure it might disturb you to have neighbors like that but you have your own space.
throwaway1777··on Breakthrough deal to prevent Colorado River from drying up
Yeah but the point is they may “use” that much water, but not even close to that much is coming out of the rivers and reservoirs. Of course there may be some less sustainable golf courses which do use that much, and those should be fixed, don’t think many folks would debate you there.
throwaway1777··on Breakthrough deal to prevent Colorado River from drying up
Counterpoint is that imperial valley farming is very productive because the climate is great for many crops other than the lack of water.
throwaway1777··on Breakthrough deal to prevent Colorado River from drying up
It does seem like a percentage or sliding scale is needed. Likely it didn’t seem like something worth considering many decades ago
throwaway1777··on Breakthrough deal to prevent Colorado River from drying up
Since this always comes up I feel obligated to point out golf courses don’t use near as much water as people think. They can use a lot of reclaimed and grey water for grass and ponds.
throwaway1777··on The Staff Engineer's Path – Book Review
At meta and google they certainly don’t make more, the L6 manager and engineer bands are the same. Same for l7. At director level the bands are so wide it may not be the same between ic and managers even if it is in theory.
throwaway1777··on Brian Chesky: Ability to hire from anywhere is more valuable than in-office work
Name such a company.
throwaway1777··on Brian Chesky: Ability to hire from anywhere is more valuable than in-office work
Yeah except this time we are outsourcing to AI.
throwaway1777··on Brian Chesky: Ability to hire from anywhere is more valuable than in-office work
Yes, some people like their jobs or see a way to advance their career.

throwaway1777··on Animals Are Dying in Droves. What Are They Telling Us?
Does anyone have a realistic comment that isn’t some Malthusian doomerism? There must be a solution to this problem besides drastically curtailing people’s lifestyle, even if it involves technologies that aren’t quite here yet like genetic engineering, space travel and fusion power.
throwaway1777··on Story: Redis and its creator antirez
Caching is cool.
throwaway1777··on ‘Nearshoring’ Push Is Fueling Tech Job Demand in Latin America
I care where my coworkers are based, but not for business reasons as much other than preferring in person work for some tasks.
throwaway1777··on The world’s oldest ultramarathon runner is racing against death
I respect that though. Like what is the point in leaving if you’re happy?
throwaway1777··on Ocean-surface temperatures are breaking records
I looked up a source since everyone loves to downvote controversial statements these days. https://www.rmets.org/metmatters/atlantic-hurricane-season#:....
throwaway1777··on Ocean-surface temperatures are breaking records
Could be true. What I remember is the Atlantic being cooler and below average hurricanes, and also some of the major reefs recovering.
throwaway1777··on On Having Enough Socks (2019)
That’s mainly because many Americans have a coffee maker instead of brewing tea. But electric kettles are increasingly common. I have one, as well as one that I can put on the stove.
throwaway1777··on On Having Enough Socks (2019)
Ridiculous. It depends on the style of shoe and the setting more than open or closed toes.
throwaway1777··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
Thai food near me- chatgpt can give you a list of thai restaurants near you. IRS phone number has a definitive answer. Chatgpt can also spit out the golang documentation for cmp or even give you sample code.
throwaway1777··on Beware of AI pseudoscience and snake oil
You actually don’t have to pay to use Xcode. You only need to pay to build for real devices and submit to the App Store.
throwaway1777··on Ask HN: What tech is under the radar with all attention on ChatGPT etc.?

throwaway1777··on Netflix to invest $2.5B in South Korea to make TV shows, movies
Ironically there’s probably more authenticity and realism in the western shows than the fantasy worlds of most kdramas and animes.
throwaway1777··on Meta's Head of AI Has Some Interesting Beliefs About Dominance and Submission
Of course. But people will only read the headline.
throwaway1777··on Starship launch debris landed 6 miles north, residents report broken windows
the negative press around this launch is pretty odd. It was actually a huge milestone for the company. Move fast and break things used to be cool. But now people don’t like Elon and Zuck or ruffling anyone’s feathers.
throwaway1777··on Will boiling water ruin green tea?
Yeah my kettle as a 140F setting. Works for me. I also use 170F for Yerba mate.
throwaway1777··on America’s $800B climate splurge is feeding a new lobbying ecosystem
Failing dollar will take a very long time if it even happens. The dollar is actually pretty strong right now despite people trying to hype china pushing the yuan.
throwaway1777··on A trick to reaching flow: Leave your work broken
Are you younger than 25? Because working 100 hour weeks used to be common in startups. Look up stories from the early days of google and Facebook. People lived in the office. It was by choice. No one forces you to do it and plenty of other companies to work for if you wanted balance.
