thr0way120··on I'm rebelling against the algorithm
The algorithm is far worse than people realize. It is a pan-platform behavioral nudge strategy to contain people to behave a specific way and box them in. It is an effective social credit score.

After watching how it behaves across X, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube - its clear the recommendations and nudges are coordinated. It is more than likely there are secret data sharing agreements to enable it.

Its insidious because it controls your reach and "score" across all platforms and then can "attack" you by attempting to surface content to push your buttons negatively across channels.

My opinion is this isnt anything to do with advertising, its a kind of government level shaping operation to try to create societal stability.

I personally have seen:

- The algorithm deliberately "neg" me multiple times, it knows what I don't like and shows me content to trigger keywords it knows will get my attention or deliberately cause insecurity ("old" "broke" "loser" "creep" "bigot" "fat"). I never interact with any content with these words, but it shows them - My conclusion is this is some sort of behavioral nudge. It happens across platforms.

- After I spoke out about Microsoft's approach to H1B, my content was permanently shadowbanned and limited on LinkedIn

- YouTubers continually censor themselves. Instead of "sex" they say "ess." Instead of "murder" they say "delete." They are consciously changing their speech. This is pure 1984.

Furthermore, I am convinced the algorithm also "shapes" the opinions of those around you in relation to you. Something much bigger than simply "being advertiser friendly" is going on, its a back door social credit score, emotional containment and psychological warfare structure. It will only get worse.

thr0way120··on How the Valley treats its experienced people (2018)
I want to note this story got spiked off the home page.

I cant identify any reason other than it is potentially "anti business."

thr0way120··on How the Valley treats its experienced people (2018)
It is very difficult being a parent, also.

They dont talk about how parents get treated.

It is another form of discrimination quite rampant in tech.

thr0way120··on Institutions try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution
I decided I NEVER wanted to manage anyone at a large or even medium sized tech company.

Politically there is no winning:

- Your peer competitors (other VPs) are after you - Your direct reports are after you (or you are accountable for them) - The direct reports of other VPs are after you - Your CEO is after you

You only have ways to lose. I dont know why anyoner would ever want one of those jobs, they are horrible.

thr0way120··on Institutions try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution
It is also why nothing ever gets built (trains etc)
thr0way120··on Institutions try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution
I had same experience at a large company.

Guy had a very simple project. He came to me and asked for "help." I found an external vendor who specialized in solving that problem (building a basic product extension) and got it done in two weeks.

When I gave him the solution, he immediately stopped talking to me and wanted nothing to do with me.

It turned out he had gone to a VP, cleared a 50 person team to work on this problem. He had a weekly call with like 10 people (tiger team he called it) to do nothing but this and nine months later they released the solution and had a giant party.

Everyone got credit, high fives all around.

AT that point I realized that work is a huge scam at large corporations. He was optimizaing for a "promotable event" that "spreads the credit far and wide."

Nothing to do with solving the problem efficiently.

thr0way120··on Why Americans Have Lost Faith in the Value of College
How come no one has run a study to ask men, in particular, why they are leaving?

You haven't seen that data because that study is not politically popular so it will never get published.

Instead this article averages men and women and sort of goes: "well, college students arent going."

The data clearly shows men are leading the way.

Why would men be quitting more than women?

thr0way120··on Why Americans Have Lost Faith in the Value of College

thr0way120··on Why Americans Have Lost Faith in the Value of College
Why did male enrollment fall off a cliff post October 2017. Look at the 2018 trend. That is immediately after Me Too.

The article conflates men and women leaving college, but the data clearly shows men are by far the biggest defectors.

Why didnt anyone ask men why they are leaving more than women? Is it because the answer is not politically acceptable (democrats) who run the media?

Yes. Ask any man in industry or university and they will tell you there has been a witch hunt against men.

Thats the data, its in the actual article.

Can you explain any other reason why men would suddenly check out en masse at that time? The economy was good.

thr0way120··on Why Americans Have Lost Faith in the Value of College

This article is a PsyOp. Look at the data. Men are the ones leaving. The catestrophic drop in male attendance is due to the Me Too movement (2018) and the 2009 election of Obama.

They are trying to cover up the fact that the majority of reason that men are leaving university is that it has been politicized against men.

Two data points important in this data:

1. Obama elected in 2009, and began a full-nation emphasis on making things politically correct and installing DEI at every level of society, including universities. Men began checking out of college at that point.

2. October 2017 ( 2018 ) the Me Too movement began, causing a catestrophic dump in male attendance of college

Its the toxic politics in the united states that are turning institutions against men, not all these other reasons.

Women are getting the memo, they are a lagging indicator. Men leaving is causing the exodus in women.

The Democratic party, and it's influence organs, turned against men as a class, and men decided to check out of every institution, marriage, dating, college, work.

thr0way120··on Office politics is not optional: learn to play the game or you'll be its victim
I have been thinking a lot about exactly your point here: That a lot of knowledge work seems to emphasize letting the employee manage themselves. SCRUM is this also. Which leads to the question: "what is management even doing / what is management for?"

I once read a book that management is purely about surveillance. They are purely there to watch you. Narcissists, as a personality trait, are people watchers who like control. So basically you end up creating a class of people who are almost guaranteed to be narcissistic in nature.

Corporations are veritable laboratories of mind control, psychology and propaganda. It is really quite complex and weird about how it actually works. It is otherwise totally illogical.

thr0way120··on Office politics is not optional: learn to play the game or you'll be its victim
Hiring "The Best" places a frame on the employee. Now they have to compete to retain the status of "the best."
thr0way120··on Office politics is not optional: learn to play the game or you'll be its victim
I have been in multiple situations where they actively plot, or simply dont care, and come up with some plan without you at your expense. Very challenging to deal with.

I prefer small companies.

thr0way120··on Ask HN: Is the job market dead or something?
Read this post by a Google Data Scientist who has been unemployed for a year (!) https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7154741...

This is not normal, or what we had seen at all the last ten years.

We are hitting a brick wall.

You know who I am talking about. lol.
thr0way120··on Office politics is not optional: learn to play the game or you'll be its victim
I was at a AAA++++ brand FAANG.

The politics, from the second I joined, were so over-the-top. It was like Wrestlemania. Everyone was smashing eachother and throwing elbows and it was like a spectator sport about who could club who first and the loudest.

I had just gotten out of a super toxic prior employer and had zero motivation to engage in corporate politics so I just decided to wait and watch and try to understand how to be effective.

I waited. And watched. And waited. And watched. And raised some ideas. All shot down. Finally I came to the realization that if I wanted to "play this game" I would need to get into the ring and start shutting people down, throwing elbows, telling other people their ideas suck etc.

After thinking about it a long time, I decided:

(a) I didn't want to do any of the above (b) I cared about building things good for customers (c) I hated the VPs involved and had nothing in common with them (d) I didn't want their jobs, because it would require doing what they were doing

I ended up leaving for a startup.

It was a very good company. I still think about if it was the right thing to do. But I was not growing, not getting to do anything, it was antithetical to my personal and career growth, I wasn't learning. It was just a wrestling ring with morons yelling at eachother and acting out their insecurities loudly.

I couldn't do it.

Contrast to prior employer: EVeryone was political, but in a sneaky, underhanded way. It was all covert assassination.

At a startup, there was no bullshit. It was: There is the work, do the work. The end.

No politics.

With remote work: Politics is even worse in my opinion. Remote workers are at a huge disadvantage.

thr0way120··on Ask HN: Is the job market dead or something?
This is a good argument because those posts get a lot of interaction
thr0way120··on Ask HN: Is the job market dead or something?
In my life experience, anecdotal data always signals trends weeks, months, years before the experts catch on.

I have never seen it otherwise. Whenever I talk to a range of people, they all tell me X is happening to them more often, the media take another 6+ months to report on it.

thr0way120··on Ask HN: Is the job market dead or something?
I have never seen so many people in my linkedin feed who are begging for work after being unemployed for a year EVER
thr0way120··on Ask HN: Is the job market dead or something?
It was dead as a doornail the last six months. It had a little bit of life in August, then it fell off a cliff. Zero. Only fake job postings, ghost posts, fake interviews, interviews at weird companies and interview loops for information espionage only pretending to be real interviews with no intent to hire.

In the last couple weeks a couple decent, actually real, roles showed up versus the fake / ever posted roles or spam posted roles to "pretend to be hiring" by companies trying to pump their IPO or whatever.

It has been brutual.

I dont think its "because of AI," Its because the economy is dying.

Judas fits the covert narcissist persona. He gains your trust then betrays you in the worst way imaginable.

Reading this thread has been fascinating.

Most people have never experienced it.

If you have been through it, YOU KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.

Everyone else: "Nah thats normal."

WHAT HAPPENED TO ME IS NOT FUCKING NORMAL

thr0way120··on Open-relationship enthusiasts crash mainstream romance apps
FinDom is when you know what you are getting into it and do it anyways.

If you hire someone to dominate you, because you enjoy it, that is between you and them.

If someone comes into your life, mirrors you, pretends to be into everything you are into, gathers personal info pretending to be someone they are not, then turns it around and begins abusing you.

That is covert malignant narcissim.

thr0way120··on Open-relationship enthusiasts crash mainstream romance apps
If they are open with it, that is definitely not narcissism I agree.

If they hide it, plus express all the other dark triad traits (sadistic / malignant behavior) I agree its different.

thr0way120··on Open-relationship enthusiasts crash mainstream romance apps
Yes, but COVID and social media has put them on STEROIDS.
thr0way120··on Open-relationship enthusiasts crash mainstream romance apps
I wouldnt have believed what happened to me until it happened.

If you are not familiar with narcissistic abuse, they approach pretending to be someone they are not. They pretend to be your mirror, study you, use your language, mirror you.

Then they begin abusing you, it triggers something called a "Trauma Bond."

I had never experienced or even heard of this before. I could not stop thinking about her.

It is extremely addictive and sinister. The only solution was to get away to break the trauma bond.

These are things you simply cannot understand if you have never experienced it. I am a different person now, I never knew that something like this could happen.

thr0way120··on Open-relationship enthusiasts crash mainstream romance apps
There is an epidemic of narcissists in society which is not being talked about enough. And when I say "Narcissist," you have to understand it goes WAY BEYOND the idea of "oh, this person is just selfish."

I was BLINDSIDED by running into a woman at work who was: - Dating a dozen different men - On every dating app - Pathologically flirting with new men everywhere she goes - Flirting with me and co-workers - Texting / Calling me all the time at odd hours - Living a lifestyle of traveling all over the place every weekend, maintaining multiple relationships with multiple men at the same time - Constantly on the hunt for new men - Meeting and immediately texting broad and deep with new men on the spot - Deliberately hurting / breaking up with men in a nasty way just to enjoy harming them and gaining power over them

IT WAS WEIRD.

It wasn't until I learned about Covert Narcissism and how it is a really severe psychological condition that I understood what I was seeing.

These are the people who are pretending to be "polygamous" or "dating multiple people." It is NOT NORMAL and NOT HEALTHY and you DO NOT WANT IT AROUND YOU TRUST ME.

Society has become extremely sick, and social media, dating apps have given the sickest people the equivalent of methamphetamines to feed their addiction for relationship "supply" nonstop.

IF you grew up in the prior era, you may not understand JUST HOW BAD AND TOXIC IT HAS GOTTEN. It has FALLEN APART.

Stay away from these people, learn to spot them, they are sneaky and out to harm you ( I was personally harmed by this woman who was playing games with me ).

There needs to be broader awareness of narcissists, how they act and how to spot and avoid them. They are a societal cancer and the cancer is spreading.
