thoughtfunction··on Start Self Hosting
I've been using an app called Mylio as a replacement to Picasa. Everything is locally hosted, the apps are very fast with large libraries and you can have peer to peer syncing between multiple devices for the same library, including your phone. I like it a lot!
thoughtfunction··on So you want to study mathematics
The problem with this approach is your basically teaching this as a side effect and hoping they're smart enough to actually connect all of that together vs. teaching those concepts directly and being far more understandable.

If you want people to understand that numbers are concepts / descriptions of something potentially infinite, and that it's ok to totally work with non-finite describable numbers without ever really writing out their values, just fucking start with that. I honestly think the start of most undergrad math curriculums should be a logic & foundations class with proofs, sets, number theory and the whole "numbers are more logical concepts, not really specific values" vs. calculus. Then teach calculus, with a big dose of 'what is infinity, really?'.

I think it's actually a great disservice and the hand wave that most calculus math classes do about those exact concepts really fucks over a lot of people. It makes calculus a weed out class because the fundamentals are not explained properly so a good amount of people just go into it as yet another thing they have to ape without real understanding. And for the people who don't work well with things they half understand, they really struggle, like I did. It really made my computer science degree a lot worse, because of the instance of starting all undergrad math with hand wavy calculus, for 3 or 4 classes.

I even wrote blog articles about it, it was probably the worse part of my computer science degree, and if math education was done differently where they didn't handwave, I probably would've had a much better time.

I'm glad that other people are thinking of making 'the privacy company', it's something that has been itching at the back of mind to do too, along with research into what is currently around:

thoughtfunction··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
Recently the story has been TSMC is pulling ahead of intel in process nodes and intel has been missing deadlines, but this inversion has only happened in the last few years.
thoughtfunction··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
HK also doesn't have TSMC, which if destroyed would put semiconductor progress and prices back 5-10 years.
thoughtfunction··on Yelp Is Replacing Restaurants’ Phone Numbers So Grubhub Can Take a Cut
It's a network effect. Readers go to databases with the most data, and creators / reviewers go to the places with the best 'audience'.

Same reason why it's been a very long and hard road to replace craigslist for many things.

thoughtfunction··on US proposes barring tech companies from offering financial services
The politicians wont do it and the populace won't like it because tech companies have become a significant part of the economy and are a significant driver of economic/retirement account growth and international political power in the USA for the past 20 years.

1TB TLC was $300-$500 3 years ago, where are you shopping, the expensive store?
thoughtfunction··on What Facebook’s new currency means for the banking system
It's a multi-currency index fund consisting of deposits of currency from users. I think the goal is to make an international currency that would be stable across countries.

thoughtfunction··on Cellebrite claims it can unlock any iPhone, many new Android phones for police
Well for #1 & #2, they don't need your phone for that, just subpoenas to the relevant companies. And most people are not international globe trotters where the extra stuff outside of the country would be of much use.

#3 is the real treasure trove.

thoughtfunction··on Xiaomi explains more about how its under-screen camera works
I do half of that crap on personal calls too. Interestingly enough, I don't get those issues on phone calls! Or most audio only calls over the internet.

The underlying issue is the technical failures of video calling, not the social environment it's used in.

thoughtfunction··on I’m not saving ninety percent of my income for myself
Make $100-$200k/yr from your equity compensation, have that same equity comp go up 2x (amazon) and you get 800k-1.6m for 4 years of work pre-tax. Add a few more years on top of that.

Cells are getting so cheap that almost all adults in the world have one. Something around the number of 5 billion, and 4 billion of those are smartphones.

Fairly soon everyone will have a smartphone and you can get service for one hour of work a month.

France is ahead in fashion and few other art forms. America is ahead in popular art because LA is the silicon valley of culture and has the population of Europe.

After a certain point it's a language and population thing, and France has a language barrier compared to english.

I think that more comes from their society aging than being credit card debt levels of spending.

These videos are hours long, and unless your doing low quality 480p, which will make it hard to follow, would definitely not take 200MB.
thoughtfunction··on The Terrifying Potential of 5G
I based it on this table: https://w.wol.ph/2015/08/28/maximum-wifi-transmission-power-...

2.4 ghz tends to be 200mW, and 5ghz max tends to be 4000mW. I wanted to be as pessimistic as possible to still make my point.

Although with stuff like 4x4 MU-MIMO routers or dual network routers with one for 2.4ghz and for 5ghz, you could say it's 4 radios at once = 16W max. Radiation per inch of 4x4W power sources is different than one 16W source, so it's not 1:1.

thoughtfunction··on The Terrifying Potential of 5G
You also get EM radiation from the electric wiring in your house, lightbulbs, the sun and so on. It's also about the strength of that EM radiation that determines is if it's harmful.

To compare, your wifi router does a max of 4000mW transmission, which is 4W

thoughtfunction··on Turnover Hits Apple’s Famed Industrial Design Team
I actually like the design of the homepod, it's quite clever.

The apple watch being held together by glue vs interlocking plate or screws although is something I don't like. It makes the water resistance fail when you are in a hot situation, like a hot sunny day, a warm shower or a hot tub.

thoughtfunction··on Refused U.S. visa eight times, Zoom CEO is now a billionaire
I see you haven't actually tried to do VATMOSS or GDPR compliance. It might be easy to register a corp, but you're walking into a liability minefield unless you do it right, which will be a few staff worth of people, or hope you're ignored & small enough to never be enforced upon.

And in the USA, you only pay sales tax for customers inside your state, unless you have something called a 'nexus' within the other states, which is simpler to avoid by staying put in a single state.

thoughtfunction··on Refused U.S. visa eight times, Zoom CEO is now a billionaire
With Article 13, GDPR, VATMOSS and other things I heard complained about from small businesses, I wouldn't want to start a company in the EU. At most I would hire employees there to work remotely.
thoughtfunction··on Facebook are 'morally bankrupt liars' says New Zealand's privacy commissioner
We can apply the same argument to governments with their lack of censorship of bad words as people walk the streets. We don't because it's ridiculous on it's face, and we don't want a blatant surveillance society such as that.
thoughtfunction··on Show HN: CryptoTrader.Tax – Tax calculator for your crypto trading
If you didn't keep proper records, then use the cost basis of your crypto as 0 and report the sale price as pure profit. You will never under pay your taxes that way, and if your numbers are low enough, it's probably worth it to overpay on taxes than to spend the time recovering detailed records of what happened in between.

If it's too big of a number for you, then better remake / recover those records. Luckily you have a permanent record called the blockchain.

thoughtfunction··on Ask HN: How do you control your diet while working at a tech company?
It's easier to avoid the food completely vs. just eating once in a while. Make your own food, bring it with you, eat with your coworkers in the cafe. Feel free to drink as many calorie free or nearly calorie free drinks from work although.

I gave up long ago on tech companies serving a 'diet plan' cafeteria line of food, like they may do for vegans or similar.

thoughtfunction··on Man makes money from cold calls with his own higher-rate phone number (2013)
It's about mass marketing spam, not people you know. People you know will call from a consistent phone number, and you can use time tested methods such as not answering instead of making them pay 0.10 to talk to you.
