thomaspark··on Ask HN: Share your personal website

My blog and personal projects.

thomaspark··on Show HN: I turned my kid's worksheet into a math game in 10 minutes with Claude
My kids love Duolingo so I just started turning their spelling lists into this: https://thomaspark.co/projects/cleolingo/

Without Claude so it took much longer than 10 minutes.

thomaspark··on “A calculator app? Anyone could make that”
I solved this by making a calculator that rounds to the nearest 1/16. Tiny app for Americans doing DIY work around the house:

Querymon is a more tutorial-like SQL game:

Just added it here:

thomaspark··on Show HN: Scorecard.gg – minimalist scoring tool for your favorite board games
This project was born out of regular games of Dutch Blitz.

For gaming, existing scoring apps had more complexity (and friction) than I was after. I wanted something quick & dirty.

I ended up on Google Sheets with some simple formulas. Other groups also started using it. It seemed to be something I could generalize with a bit more work, and here we are.

Welcome any and all feedback.

thomaspark··on Show HN: Scorecard.gg – minimalist scoring tool for your favorite board games
Thanks for the feedback, the current iteration is definitely a work in progress and mobile needs much polish. Your bottom tab idea is a good one for mobile.

I'm not a regular Scrabble player so feedback from actual players is helpful. I've seen the play column and thought it was a neat-to-have feature, but on mobile it's a different story.

thomaspark··on Show HN: Scorecard.gg – minimalist scoring tool for your favorite board games
Good thought, I'll add it to todos.
thomaspark··on Show HN: Scorecard.gg – minimalist scoring tool for your favorite board games
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add it.
thomaspark··on Show HN: Scorecard.gg – minimalist scoring tool for your favorite board games
I'm accepting suggestions for games to add, since pretty I'm out of touch with the scene and there's so many amazing new ones to keep up with.

As far as contributing, maybe I'll put this up on GitHub...

thomaspark··on Show HN: Scorecard.gg – minimalist scoring tool for your favorite board games
Absolutely! I meant to add it back, I originally had one front and center on the landing page. Lots of uses for it.
thomaspark··on Codections #1
My take on NYT Connections, aimed at devs!
thomaspark··on CarPlay Karaoke: Playing music videos and lyrics through cover art
Thanks for the suggestion! Podcasts crossed my mind but I didn't find any examples of chapter art or even know if the feature existed. That sounds like a promising avenue.
thomaspark··on Games Worth Continuing to Develop (Part 6)
Cool site. Here's the rest of the series:

I always felt Starcraft: Brood War was a near perfectly balanced game worthy of preservation.

thomaspark··on The original “Bambi”
I made a browser extension called No Scary Parts that skips traumatic scenes on Disney+ while trying to hold together a cohesive plot. Mainly for young kids who enjoy the music and other scenes, but aren't ready for the full story yet.

https://thomaspark.co/projects/no-scary-parts/

Fantasia was easy. Managed to do The Lion King. Haven't been able to pull off Bambi yet...

thomaspark··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
I make coding games at https://codepip.com

Flexbox Froggy took off and I kept going.

thomaspark··on Notches Gone Wild
This takes me right back to those quirky old Mac OS 7/8/9 extensions that destabilized your system.

One for your nostalgia section, Geo for Bootstrap:

thomaspark··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
https://thomaspark.co/projects/no-scary-parts/

A Chrome extension that skips creepy scenes on Disney+. Supports the movies you'd expect like Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Fantasia. Bambi next?

thomaspark··on Show HN: LaTeX.css – Make your website look like a LaTeX document
On a side-note, I made a thing a few years back that does academic papers with CSS, with examples of ACM and IEEE format:

thomaspark··on Toddler Password – Get a secure password generated by a toddler
Well done on the site, lovely style and funny idea.
thomaspark··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
I run Codepip (https://codepip.com), coding games for learning web dev.

Started out making a single game as a weekend project, it got a good reception, so there was obvious demand for learning to code in this interactive way. Have since branched out to more games covering different HTML, CSS, and JS topics with more coming. It's continued as a one-person operation, for the time being.

thomaspark··on Show HN: I've made a rotary dial number input, because why not?
Agreed, it's like the principle of Fitt's Law and screen edges having infinite width.

I made a version a little while back that takes this into account: https://github.com/thomaspark/rotary

thomaspark··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
It's no coincidence that so many phones are adopting the notch right after Apple, like so many other design trends.

thomaspark··on Grid Garden – A game for learning CSS grid
Yeah, although the problem is that using 33fr 33fr 33fr, will have the same effect and lead to that perfectly reasonable conclusion.

I'll work on improving the explanation of level 21 and fr units in general.

thomaspark··on Grid Garden – A game for learning CSS grid
Yup that's the idea. Trying not to overload people focusing on a single new property, while still giving the full context of the ruleset. I will see about bumping up the contrast a bit.
thomaspark··on Google Fonts Redesigned
Lovely redesign that addresses usability complaints I had with the old version. In fact I built my own search tool for Google Fonts a few months back because of these issues:

Some of my critiques of the old version:
