thirdusername··on The Democrats Are Doomed, or How A ‘Big Tent’ Can Be Too Big
There was an iGNiTE talk where someone visualized how the different groups have voted through time and it seem to also agree with you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8I5iMa_VV0.
thirdusername··on Translation Of Tweets To Other Languages Spotted On Twitter
Us non-English Europeans follow and tweet in both English and our native tongue fairly often. Then there's Belgium that has three official languages and Finland where a small minority speaks Swedish (as opposed to Finnish). So I wouldn't be so sure about that.
thirdusername··on Sam Harris: Science can answer moral questions
If you feel like the material you are finding is too basic for you it probably means you are looking in the wrong places for your knowledge level. At some point there won't be many records available for the things you don't already know and you will have to dig into journals or follow the experts more directly for new material. You could also try to find conference recordings from events that the experts themselves like to attend. That and just avoid places like the Daily Mail like it has the plague.

Examples I enjoy:

thirdusername··on HNRFS: Help me help you; whats missing from your day?
Random thoughts I've had that I'm probably never going to get around to doing:

* Something that will let me automatically backup all my data that is on various services like Facebook, Youtube, Hacker News etc.

* An app that will join and make all my IM logs searchable from trillian, meebo, regular MSN, Skype etc. that I have lying around everywhere. It should let me join logs and people across different services and users on the same service.

* A conference and event directory that will alert me about interesting things happening close to me.

* Something that will let me filter my newsfeeds easier. For example I don't want to be linked things more than once, even from different sources and I want to be able to query say delicious for tags on a hacker news post and filter out things I'm not interested in based on that. I would also like to be able to filter out HN posts that are below a certain number of up votes and maybe put a days delay on when they show up in my feedreader so there will be comments.

* A things I read and watch, scrobbler.

thirdusername··on Kid Cannabis (2005)
Starbucks don't sell weed in Amsterdam either. I think they are quite attached to their image of being clean and smoke free. :)
thirdusername··on Ask YC: Would you fund an adult themed start up?
Vanguard made a piece about porn industry and the what the effects of the internet has on it that had some relevant bits on innovation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LsO5uNVCWI.

One of the porn company's tech guys claimed they were the first to pull of live HD streaming and they had a TV network calling for consultation.

thirdusername··on An attempt at the world's biggest math magic trick.
ISO Dates are in the form yyyy-mm-dd. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iso_date
thirdusername··on Recycling is Bullshit; Make Nov. 15 Zero Waste Day, not America Recycles Day
The only way that graph could be accurate for Sweden is if any non-canned beer counts as refillable. I say that with absolute certainty since we have a state monopoly and government stores with the same stuff in them across the entire country.

Glass bottles don't get refilled, they get recycled.

thirdusername··on How not to write an email opt-out page
I hate the ones that don't let you unsubscribe because they need you to login first. Then you don't have the login information so you need to do a password recovery, which you can't do without supplying the town your mother was born in/a phone number from 6 years ago both of which you either have either have no idea about or have since long forgotten.

This was my unsuccessful attempt at getting rid of the WAR newsletter. :(

thirdusername··on Ask HN: Space in the market for luxury public transit?
They did away with the first class metro wagons in '91 in Paris and unless they've reinstated them since this summer (when I was there), I think you are mistaken.
thirdusername··on JSON visualization tool
There's http://github.com/jamespadolsey/prettyPrint.js
thirdusername··on Proposal: "{" and "}" to be known as openstache, closestache
In Swedish:

  () == Paranteser (Parentheses)
  [] == Hakparanteser (Hook parentheses)
  {} == Måsvingar (Gull wings)
        Klammerparanteser (Brace parentheses)
        Krullparenteser (Curl parentheses)
        Spetsparanteser (Tip parentheses)
Ackolader (Swedification of the French accolades => Hugs)
Swedish uses left, right or more commonly amongst developers start and end prefixes. Måsvingar seem to be winning as the word of choice for braces amongst developers.
thirdusername··on Lessons from eastern Europe's flat tax
Dear sir, you seem unaware of the commenting guidelines for Hacker News that in short state that our community cares about tone and civilized discussions with supporting arguments as opposed to the reddit-style blatant unsupported statements and profanity: http://ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

This is most likely why this is the third comment from you in this thread being down voted.

thirdusername··on Understanding science is not always as hard as you think
Understanding that you are allowed to do random access and skimming is crucial not only to enjoy reading many papers but to technical books as well! You got taught to read something from cover to cover before college and doing otherwise is viewed as laziness, maybe even cheating. It's not until later they explicitly state you should skim and only digg deeper when there's something relevant you don't understand.

It is also often pointed out that great academics aren't necessarily great writers which I'm sure is the cause for a lot of the dryness in papers.

I'm also reasonably sure it has to do with journals enforcing overly strict formating rules to the point of blatantly refusing to publish for no reason other than being slightly over length. A hilarious tale of this is How to Publish a Scientific Comment in 123 Easy Steps: http://www.physics.gatech.edu/frog/How%20to%20Publish%20a%20...

thirdusername··on The Case For An Older Woman
I'm really curious how the Distribution of singles by age is about the younger people being more comfortable with the Internet. Being 24 I know that I belonged to the last generation that had to discover the Internet, unlike my twelve year old brothers generation where it's something that's eternal and has always been there, and definitely unlike my mother generation that seem to have mostly been taught the Internet from the younger generations. (In Sweden anyway)

I'm amazed OkCupid a free dating site has a 11:9 male:female ratio, I would've thought the males outnumbered the women by much more. I'm happy to see my prejudices invalidated.

The author should've pointed out that one possible reason for women getting less interested in marriage and more interested in casual sex with age might have to do with the ones there are interested in marriage and something serious end up in long term relationships. While the ones that are less interested in something long term keep being single and thus registered on OkCupid. Rather than it seeming like it's only about a change in the female mentality with age.

I really hope they redo this OkTrend (and others) in the future if the site is around as there's such a great opportunity to discover changing mentalities in society towards sex and dating.

( Unrelated, I get to tell the wonderful girl I met on OkCupid that shes in the zone of greatness. :D )

thirdusername··on So Where Else in the World Can You Get 1 Gbps to the Home?
I get 100 Mbit/s through SUNET (Swedish university computer network) like almost all students in Sweden, which these days don't even raise an eyebrow. About €20 every six months. It's also worth mentioning that in Sweden download caps in any form are (almost) unheard of. You get what you pay for.
thirdusername··on Will a Space Cannon Fuel the Next Moon Landing?
There was a google tech talk given by Quicklaunch (that this article is about) that was reasonably interesting which also covers other methods and why they are insufficient if you want more details: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IXYsDdPvbo
thirdusername··on Geek behaviors present during conversations
I love your comment, it's really informative and just what I need. Do you have any suggestions of references (online or offline) where a layman can learn more about social queues? :)
thirdusername··on Ask PG: What have I done wrong?
It's the same for me and has been like that for weeks, months(?). Having your votes on hacker news isn't exactly important to life as others have pointed out but it's slightly demoralizing whenever I forget myself and vote on something only to realize the system just ignores me. I'm useless and valued less than even a new user. :(

I'm considering creating a new user because of that as I've tried to just wait for it to work again hoping it's temporary. I have no idea what caused me to loose my voting rights in the first place and there's no way for me to change my behavior if it's undesirable. I've for the record never voted maliciously and this is my username because I've lost my password twice before not because I have several users to vote with.

thirdusername··on I hired 50 people today. This is what they look like
When it's illegal? There's a huge difference between crowd sourcing violence and writing something political (which a lot of people already get payed to do), ones organized crime the other is not.
thirdusername··on The Puzzling Paradox of Sign Language
I think you meant to type the composite word "varsågod" (and not "Be so god" ^^), it's not a phrase. A similar problem exist with "lagom" which roughly means something like: "enough, not to much or to little.", with a strong positive meaning. It also goes the other way too as computer engineer doesn't have a good exact translation as the English "engineer" is more nuanced than the Swedish "Ingengör".

If you feel like procrastinating and want to have a laugh at how ambiguous and strange Swedish can be I recommend Mastering Swedish by slay radio: http://www.slayradio.org/mastering_swedish.php

thirdusername··on Eye Contact
Swedes avoid making eye contact with strangers like it was the plague, a lot of effort is put into not getting caught looking at someone on public transportation or as you pass people on the street.

My friends from CA were really bad at keeping eye contact during conversations and was really off putting at first as I figured they weren't interested anything I was saying, so I kept switching topics until I figured out what was happening and asked them about it and if I was staring ("little bit").

thirdusername··on 37% of people commute by bike in Copenhagen thanks to this infrastructure
Stealing an image from the other person replying to you it pretty much looks just like this: http://www.ski-epic.com/amsterdam_bicycles/pm3s_amsterdam_bi... in many places. Block after block with bicycles although there is room on the sidewalk for people to at least in the parts I've been in.

The most frustrating thing about Copenhagen is all the bicycle repair shops take up the business locations that should be small food places. :P

thirdusername··on Is there any age limit to being a programmer ?
I have a classmate that started his undergrad when he was 24 and were almost completely clueless when it came to programming, computers and nerd culture in general.

Two years in hes hacking on side projects during lectures, referencing xkcd in casual conversation and has found areas of interests where hes more knowlegable than anyone else in my program where some of us have been into these types of things for as long as we can remember.

I know it hasn't been easy for him as the learning curve is rather steep but it flattens out so just don't give up, try to work the problems and questions when you have to (stackoverflow.com and vark.com are great depending on the size and difficulty) and you'll pick things up pretty quickly and I don't think you're starting out quite as bad as he did.

I started programming when I was 11 or 12, so I'm not really sure I can give you a satisfactory answer to the last question. I also learn new things every day so I wouldn't say I'm done and I hope I never will be.

thirdusername··on Twelve Tips to Master Programming Faster
Somewhat related, would you mind answering: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=961172 :)
thirdusername··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
I have the same problem although I think when you see the submissions vote go up it's someone else since they get voted on a lot more than individual comments. For me it's both in chrome and firefox (in Win 7) so I don't think it's the browsers faulth and I noticed it for the first time maybe a 15-30 days ago. I'm guessing one of three things are happening:

1) We banned from voting as the moderators doesn't seem to tell people when they moderate.

2) pg is running an experiment.

3) It's a bug.

I agree that there needs to be a place to report malfunctions. It would also be nice to know when a moderator takes action against you.

thirdusername··on Welcome to HN. Please, read 'Hacker News Guidelines.' We take them seriously.
and/or have hacker news auto-flag the printer friendly / non-printer friendly version where it's possible to do so, could be an idea too. :)
