thinkmassive··on Home Assistant: Three years later
Have you ever used a three-way light switch?

Plus the momentary switches are always centered, they look fine next to traditional switches in either position.

thinkmassive··on Should toggle button show its current state or the state to which it'll change? (2010)
The Tesla app is horrible about this.

What does a greyish padlock icon indicate? Let me tap it twice to cycle through states, then I’ll click once more if the original state needed to be toggled. If there’s any delay in the car’s response, prepare to complete another lock/unlock cycle, more slowly this time to be certain.

thinkmassive··on What happened with the Web Monetization API?
The Lightning Network is a layer on top of Bitcoin, which allows users to aggregate a huge number of transactions into a payment channel that’s tracked off-ledger. The only transactions that need to be settled on the base layer (broadcast to the public Bitcoin blockchain) are channel open and close events.

There are already APIs protected by an L402 paywall that charges tiny fractions of a cent for access to protected resources.

thinkmassive··on Bitcoin is dead, but it was a good try
> if you make a transaction with someone, that person now knows your account and can easily find out your bitcoin balance

What’s an "account" in the context of Bitcoin?

thinkmassive··on Proposed top-level domain string for private use: ".internal"
Kinda weird to blame the people who made an RFC, instead of the industry leader who recommended using .local completely on their own, without support from the wider industry. This is explained in the next couple paragraphs, where you stopped copying.
thinkmassive··on Dungeons and Dragons turns 50 today
Ah, lack of availability makes a lot of sense given these community remakes are now two decades old. Improving the content layout also sounds great. I will check them out, thanks!

Kinda weird to differentiate between B/X and BECMI, considering Companion/Master/Immortals are extensions for higher level characters using the same Basic/Expert rules.

Edit: the distinction still seems pedantic to me, but these helped to understand the differences in the context of OSR:

thinkmassive··on Dungeons and Dragons turns 50 today
I found some useful links below for answering my questions, ironically in a dead (but very informative) comment from johnvak01.

tl;dr: old school versions apply clarifications and enhancements to the original B/X rules for smoother gameplay, some add additional content, and many people want to avoid paying anything to WotC

thinkmassive··on Dungeons and Dragons turns 50 today
How do these community versions, like Old School Essentials, differ from using the real BECMI rules? What would motivate a group to pick up one of these, rather than say a reprint of the Rules Cyclopedia (or using a free digital copy from archive.org)?

thinkmassive··on Why are we templating YAML? (2019)
> I have definitely done some terrible things like "sed -e s/$FOO/foo/g" to implement templating

Next time you reach for this, check out envsubst for a slightly improved solution that’s somewhat standard (at least common).

On the topic of templating or modifying helm charts using jsonnet, you might find Tanka helpful:

The weight of the battery is related to the amount of friction.

> Unless you're a criminal, nobody's looking inside your VM.

> Heck, AWS can't access VMs (of course it's Internet cool to not believe this).

Do the VMs only let someone in if they’re running a criminal workload, or how does it work?

thinkmassive··on Spot Bitcoin ETF receives official approval from the SEC
> If you need an L2 transaction layer to solve an issue inherent to an L1 chain, you're kinda just admitting that the base layer is flawed.

On a similar note, TCP is an admission that IP is flawed. And HTTP is proof that the entire networking stack is a scam.

Clearly, any decent networking protocol would handle any and all information interchange anyone could ever need.

The fact that HTTP is on its third iteration, and it’s still built in top of the same Internet Protocol from 1974, proves that _nothing_ has changed. /s

thinkmassive··on Skyfield: Elegant Astronomy for Python
Cool, it sounds like Skyfield is intentionally made interoperable with AstroPy:

Is it possible to downvote a submission? Do you mean flagging?

That doesn’t seem appropriate for something that’s simply uninteresting, based on the site guidelines:

thinkmassive··on Marines Test Fire Robot Dog Armed with Rocket Launcher
> It's interesting to note that the Marines refer to the design tested last month as a "robotic goat" rather than the far more common robot dog description.

Maybe four legs provides better all-terrain capabilities at lower parts cost than a treaded vehicle?

thinkmassive··on Ask HN: Is anyone using cloud dev environments (e.g. Codespaces/Replit) at work?
My computing environment mostly consists of a browser and tmux, with vim for editing. A few months ago I wanted to try Github Copilot, so I signed up for the trial thinking I could use it in Codespaces. Eventually I gave up and installed VSCode locally. Now I use it a little, mostly for exploratory work, but less than I would if it were in my browser.

Is there any CDE with good Copilot (or equivalent) integration available today?

thinkmassive··on How to cook ground meat perfectly without vision
My most wanted Instant Pot modification is to replace the beeps it makes when it reaches pressure. It should play a chiptune version of Queen’s “Under Pressure”

Edit: mine might only beep when the timer expires, but that’s still a great opportunity to play that tune

thinkmassive··on Every single Onewheel is being recalled after four deaths
Pushback is nothing like “a bump”

The nose starts lifting and it’s quite obvious. I’ve heard the term “Captain Morganing” in multiple groups of riders, because that’s how it feels if you’re not aggressively leaning into it to go faster.

The GT already has an audible alert, it’s less obvious than pushback.

thinkmassive··on Every single Onewheel is being recalled after four deaths
Simply carving , which is how you turn, requires some balancing by the rider. Going fast over anything but ideal terrain also requires active balancing. If you ride one in any capacity beyond a few mph in a parking lot, you’ll feel it in your legs.
