thieving_magpie··on GitHub Incident
I can understand your viewpoint but just to offer a counter I always check HN for major outage news when it comes to github/AWS/GCP/Azure. There have often been comments with bits of information as to the cause and remediation efforts.
thieving_magpie··on Ask HN: Horrible YC startup employment experience, should I speak up?
Personally, I'd just move on. It has limited potential to be beneficial and great potential to be detrimental.
thieving_magpie··on Stealth bomber in flight on Google Maps
Beautiful place to live.
thieving_magpie··on China’s noisy ‘dancing grannies’ silenced by device that disables speakers
>US really underutilizes public spaces and many things become a financial transaction

I cannot understand the underutilization of public spaces. That's very far from my experiences but it may just be regional.

I have no idea what you mean about "many things become a financial transaction".

thieving_magpie··on Facebook banned me for life because I help people use it less
This isn't about criticism though. It's about changing their product.
thieving_magpie··on Anom Encrypted App Analysis
Not to speak for them but I experienced the same feeling of interest in who the author was. For me it sounded like someone associated with CIPHR or another messaging application that did this analysis (still factual analysis) on a rival application. There was some marketing-type language in there that made me think that.
thieving_magpie··on Anom Encrypted App Analysis
I've never considered JIRA would be used by the FBI or intelligence agencies. The user stories would be fun to read.

I wonder why this blog was deleted by the author. Get a phone call from the FBI?

thieving_magpie··on Sublime Text 4
It's appreciated and looks great.
thieving_magpie··on Sublime Text 4
Oh interesting. I had previously read a limitation of changing the title bar to use a dark theme was based on sticking to win32. Sounds like that hurdle was overcome in a different way - either way I'm appreciative.

Here's a reference to the discussion on the 'dark theme': https://forum.sublimetext.com/t/support-dark-theme-on-window...

Hello. How was the transition on the Windows side to UWP?

It looks great.

thieving_magpie··on Linux Foundation’s demands to the University of Minnesota
Hypothetically let's say that is damage that they can be held liable for.

How far does it extend? The patches would have been reviewed and approved by someone at the linux foundation. Are they complicit and liable? Same goes for the person that merged the code. I don't think that's a door I want to open.

thieving_magpie··on A salt monopoly could spike car accidents in the Midwest
Where I used to live used crushed glass as part of a traction mix. They claimed there were no adverse effects on tires but there were many complaints from cyclists that their tires were popping regularly.
thieving_magpie··on A worker owned (co-op) store for sustainable products
I'm interested but looks like at this point you have to pay to attend. Seems like a strange model.

If you open up the meeting to more folks without requiring a donation let me know!

thieving_magpie··on Why I Actively Discourage Online Tooling like jwt.io and Online JSON Validators
> they work at a bank---their threat model is probably rather more vigorous than most

Until one day when you work with ACH files and start having existential dread about the american payroll system.

thieving_magpie··on AI slays top F-16 pilot in DARPA dogfight simulation
>We've seen this before, even for a lot more limited and controlled environment like the game Dota the "AI" can beat the humans a few times before the humans learns to exploit it's many weaknesses.

I recall that there was AI beating top Dota players. I'm not familiar with humans figuring out the AI and exploiting weaknesses. Every search I've done just shows articles about the AI winning. By chance do you know where I can read up on humans figuring out the weaknesses of the AI?

thieving_magpie··on How can Wall Street be so healthy when Main Street isn’t?
I'd really like to read more about how tax payers are paying $18,000 each but all I can find as a source is some twitter comment and a reddit thread where the claim is disputed. Do you have something more substantial I could read? At first glance it seems extremely exaggerated so I'd like to get my head around it.
thieving_magpie··on Introducing Instagram Reels
I think the criticism tends to be more focused on corporate espionage which this is decidedly not. I wouldn't say this is flipping any narrative on its head. I can't even tell the major differences between vine, tiktok, stories, snapchat, and now reels.
thieving_magpie··on Ask HN: How does your company manage its encryption keys?
Thanks for the kind words. Good luck to you as well.
thieving_magpie··on Ask HN: How does your company manage its encryption keys?
Luckily I was in charge of setting up our remote repositories and made sure that by default they are all private repos, otherwise this would have happened without a doubt.
thieving_magpie··on Ask HN: How does your company manage its encryption keys?
We make no distinction between dev keys and production. Consider them production.

Since it's of interest to HN, I am working on educating our very small team on how keys should be protected and used. I am the youngest developer by about 15 years. It's a very rural company and it often feels like all learning and passion for development stalled around 2005. It's a company that gave me a chance to grow into a development role with no previous experience so I feel indebted to try my best to keep the lights on.

thieving_magpie··on Ask HN: How does your company manage its encryption keys?
Someone at my company generated the keys. They then put them on a network share without any security restrictions. They've been there for 5 years with no rotation. At least 2 are checked into source control.
thieving_magpie··on Abe, IOC agree to delay Tokyo Olympics by one year
That's sad but what does "let Japan know that this is not their fault" even mean?
thieving_magpie··on Interpol issues 'red notice' for Carlos Ghosn's arrest
BBC tends to be hostile to any VPNs from what I've noticed, likely to ward off fraudulent accounts accessing live television without paying for the appropriate license.
thieving_magpie··on The old internet died and we watched and did nothing
It's funny you'd link that wiki page in support of Buzzfeed News being reputable and separate from Buzzfeed.

1st sentence: BuzzFeed News is an American news website published by BuzzFeed.

2nd sentence: It has published a number of high-profile scoops, including the Trump–Russia dossier, for which it was heavily criticized

thieving_magpie··on Facebook staff demand Zuckerberg limit lies in politcal ads
I think it's obvious they were not asserting a professional legal opinion when they say "free speech and paid speech are not the same thing".

It's disingenuous of you to tell them to "hit the streets", I think that's basically what they're doing at their place of employment that has a significant impact on our elections. I'm not sure what more you want from them.

thieving_magpie··on Blizzard Suspends Professional Hearthstone Player for Hong Kong Comments
> One super power now has majority ownership of the other.

A few companies and minority ownership stakes does not mean any super power owns the majority of another super power. That's a wide gulf.

thieving_magpie··on Blizzard Suspends Professional Hearthstone Player for Hong Kong Comments
That's vague wording on purpose to cover anything they want. So what we've determined they want is to avoid any public show of support for the people of Hong Kong. I don't know if I'd call it unfair so much as showing their true intentions.
thieving_magpie··on ‘We May Have to Shoot Down This Aircraft’
In the wider context they're talking about if it's going to be used to attack a populated area. If the pilots determine that is the intent, then the most limiting action you can take is to take the plane down. I really don't think being far underground in a bunker Cheney felt threatened.
thieving_magpie··on Verified by Twilio
Thanks for the lecture but we do have regulations regarding phone calls. The laws are just being broken by citizens outside of the United States. This isn't uncommon in countries where English is the most widely spoken language.
thieving_magpie··on Sunsetting Mercurial Support in Bitbucket
I have 92 mercurial repositories at my company that I'll need to convert.
