thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: Where did you first learn to code?
I remember trying to teach myself python when I was 9 years old. I downloaded a book and couldn't understand how while and if statements could be used to build a functioning program that does something cool... So I stopped... Learnt Matlab 10 years later for 1st year university and the rest is history.
thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: How do you come up with side project ideas in 2024?
I come up with solutions to solve my own problems. You get better at finishing things the more you finish things.
thewizardofaus··on Bootstrap or VC? [video]
This has been my observation too.

VC backed competitors can spend 10-50x marketing spend of early bootstrapped companies quite easily.

thewizardofaus··on What I learned selling my company
"Once you get an offer, try to generate competing offers from your key relationships"

I've always seen the statement of getting competing offers but how does it actually work in reality?

Is it as simple as contacting the key decision maker from competitor and saying...

"I've got an offer X, what can you do?"

thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: Are there any conferences for bootstrapped hardware businesses?
Not sure about conferences but I run a sports tech hardware bootstrapped business. Feel free to drop me a line (email in profile)
thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: How much code do you write in your job?
Solo founder; it tends to change rapidly depending on the stage of the product.

Probably 90% of the time writing code currently. Once the hardware product is released publicly it drops to 10% (maintenance) and then ramps up when new significant features are added.

Broadly speaking..

Stage 1: design specs 0% code

Stage 2: prototyping 50% code

Stage 3: the hard work 90% code

Stage 4: selling and maintenance 10%+

thewizardofaus··on 2023: Focusing on a single product pays off
As much as I enjoy linux.. it's just a real pain to use daily for work.

Hackintosh a T480 and it's the best of both worlds.

thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: How is your startup doing?
Bootstrap, solo founder. Everyday is tough but I'm making it work. Had to pick up some side consulting work to make ends meet.
thewizardofaus··on No Revenge for Nerds? Evaluating the Careers of Ivy League Athletes
I had a quick skim through the paper; but I may have missed the breakdowns by sport.

It would be interesting to see the statistics for sports that pay extremely well (NFL, Soccer, etc) compared to the Tier-2 sports (Volleyball, Track and Field, etc).

Tier-2 athletes have always had to juggle the prospect of never earning enough money with their sport and hence have had to focus on education too.

It's not surprising that after sporting careers the skills of being at the top of your sport (ambition, adversity, etc) transfer to Business and Finance.

thewizardofaus··on How I stay motivated as a solo creator
A crucial point the post misses is the distinction between motivation and discipline.

Ultimately it's easy to work on things when they are fun and exciting; but motivation will only last for so long... once that happens it's the discipline that needs to take over for you to keep progressing forward.

thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: Any hardware startups here?
Started a hardware startup from my background in sport. It's very tough, especially being the only employee & founder.
thewizardofaus··on Record labels panic as A.I. generated song becomes ‘hit single’
This concept does already exist to a certain degree. Single Player Project (SPP) for World of Warcraft is one example.
thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: General chemistry book recommendations
"The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements" by Sam Kean
thewizardofaus··on Google releases Flutter 3.7, teases future of app development framework
I am sole founder of a bootstrapped hardware startup.

My main competitor is iOS only. As I'm the only developer Flutter allowed me to create both iOS and Android apps simultaneously (with some tweaking).

My customer base is approximately 80% iOS / 20% Android.

thewizardofaus··on Long Covid: major findings, mechanisms and recommendations
Covid fatigue is no joke.

As an Elite Athlete I'm training 20-30 hours a week. I got covid last year (triple vaxed) and it wiped me out for a good 6 months. It took me 3 weeks to be able to walk longer than a minute without needing to lay down for the rest of the day and sleep.

I have dealt with fatigue problems for 6 months and only just now, do I feel like I'm getting "back to normal".

The most frustrating thing is alot of people are dismissive of the symptoms and generally say, "Oh yeah, I get tired too" but fail to understand the severity of it as they haven't experienced it.

I have a fairly good understanding of my body and the associated symptoms of overtraining/fatigue in a heavy training cycle but covid fatigue was soemthing completely different.

thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: What's your favorite illustration in computer science?
Diffie-Hellman key exchange pictures that use mixing colours to illustrate the concept.
thewizardofaus··on The science of having ideas in the shower
I experience EXACTLY the same thing moments before falling asleep (no thc). It's truly amazing. If I manage to jolt myself awake I will write them down, otherwise they will be surely forgotten. And the ratio is similar to yours, good idea/gibberish(or not feasible).
thewizardofaus··on Less gym time, same results: Why ‘lowering’ weights is all you need to do
This is extremely common in the triphasic training approach.

"Each block focuses on a particular portion of the main lifts—the eccentric (down) phase, the isometric (static) phase, and the concentric (up) phase."

Another common technique for force production in elite sport is to use weight releasers that overload the eccentric phase of a movement.

For example; squat eccentric 200kg, weight releases, concentric with 100kg.

thewizardofaus··on Tesla plunges 250 feet off a California cliff, all 4 occupants survive
Wow. Using a free fall calculator to put it into perspective.

Height: 250ft (76metres)

Speed at impact: 87mph (140kmph)

Time of fall: 4 seconds

I can't imagine the dread during those 4 seconds of free fall.

thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: Why do search functions everywhere not return what I search for?
This topic (or a variation of it) comes up quite frequently on HN.

I agree with your observations. Google search seems to completely ignore search terms in quotation marks. It's like the search favours showing somewhat relevant results instead of nothing at all.

thewizardofaus··on Autopsy-based characterization of myocarditis after anti-SARS-CoV-2-vaccination
"But wait 15 minutes to see if your child gets anaphylaxis from them. We could have tested for allergy before giving the vaccine but its more convenient to have you wait around after."

The waiting period of 15 minutes after a vaccine has always been recommended. It's standard medical recommendation and safety.

thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: 2 weeks off work, what to do?
Spend some time out in nature. Extended periods of time away from the computer and out in nature is good for the soul.
thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: Companies of one, what is your tech stack?
Run a hardware based tech startup.

Main Website: wordpress, WooCommerce, stripe

Mobile Apps (iOS/Android): Flutter, Firebase

WebApp: ReactJS, Firebase

Hardware Firmware: C

thewizardofaus··on Could long Covid be linked to herpes viruses? Early data offer a hint
Doesn't the herpes virus generally reactivate when the immune system is being run down?

I know there is literature to suggest that Cold Sore outbreaks in an individual generally occur during cold and flu outbreaks.

thewizardofaus··on GPSJam: Daily Maps of GPS Interference
Synchronous and Asynchronous GPS Spoofing are the correct terms to use
thewizardofaus··on Reading a Profit and Loss Statement
Nice writeup. Understanding financials is a great skill to have.

For completeness, the author should follow up with articles dedicated to reading Balance Sheet and also Cashflow statement.

thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: How are you hosting email for your startup employees?
GSuite or Microsoft. In another life I would spend time with a custom solution, but now, I just want to get up and running fast.
thewizardofaus··on Managing mental health while running a startup
Some of my tips:

1) Meditation is great. Do more meditation

2) You will have super productive days and you will have super unproductive days. That's okay. Don't sweat it, they will even out. Long term progress is what you want

thewizardofaus··on Ask HN: Have you had any real benefits from apps like Headspace, Fabulous, etc?
I use Insight Timer, completely free. I just use the timer mode in the app, so I can see my stats overtime.

Meditation is one of those things that you do not notice immediate benefits. It takes a couple of weeks.

Start with 5 mins a day and aim to build up to 10mins.

Has it transformed my life? Probably not.

Has it helped me stay calmer under high pressure situations? Absolutely.

The biggest change is you start to become self aware of how you are feeling.

"okay, I am feeling anxious and can feel my heartrate accelerating. That's okay, let's just focus on my breathing and stay calm"

Etc

thewizardofaus··on How to skate a 10k
Truly amazing. Thankyou for translating Jacob.

As an Elite Athlete myself; hoping to represent my country in the 2024 Summer Olympics it resonates with me greatly.

I will be printing this off and putting it in a place I see often.

Thankyou
