thetanil··on Raspberry Pi Server Mark III
cloud style microservice architectures. saves a lot of power and no single node is carrying all the weight. distributed computing is scalable. 1 big xeon is not.
thetanil··on Raspberry Pi Server Mark III
Good to know. I couldn't see any reason that they wouldn't work for a Pi4, but I couldn't find a single manufacturer that said Pi4 was actually supported.

missed the SD cards. I am benchmarking against the best SD cards I can get because that is always the bottleneck on the Pi to my experience. The bandwidth and clock rate on USB3 vs sdcard bridge is just faster, but the media is also cheaper in USB3 format in general.

any usb 3.0 drive works, but I am using SanDisk Ultra Fits. price per byte is less and performance is similar or slightly better for reads and way better for sustained writes.

No Overclock.

99-100% CPU on all 4 cores for hours and no throttling. they do run at 75-78C instead of 65C, but I could not get them to throttle.

Even with the cheapo 3 piece heat sinks there was almost no throttling, but they did throttle occasionally after sustained stress.

yeah, I'm excited to get my hands on some Jetsons too. the 4gb memory on the pi is really a big pro though. when one of these SBCs finally comes with 8GB and GPU acceleration for < 100$ we will see some real progress I think.

Posted before I saw this comment. Yes passive cooling is fine with recent firmware and a good heatsink case. I have stress tested with the following case for hours with all cores pegged at 100% and there is no CPU throttling with passive cooling. They do run hotter, but they do not throttle. Old firware and bad cases will though. https://www.amazon.com/Geekworm-Raspberry-Computer-Aluminum-...

Example case which does away with the need for fans is:

The Pi does not do poe natively. POE is available as a hat, but I have not seen one for the Pi4 yet. The hats are nearly as expensive as the Pi itself.

Running a 6 node cluster of Pi4s at home now. Did some benchmarks. Long story short.

USB thumb drive boot disks are better performance and cheaper than SD cards.

Fans are completely unnecessary on a Pi4 with an aluminum heat shield style "case". They do run hotter than with a fan, but they will not be heat throttled with recent firmware.

i think you will lose in the end this way if you actually factor in power costs.
thetanil··on Ask HN: Where does one search development advice these days?
The python discord help channels are amazing. I want to take their bots and make them available for every language. The whole ask / answer workflow is soooo damn smooth.
thetanil··on Ask HN: Where does one search development advice these days?
I agree with this to a point. I mean, tools really do help. Take C++ or JS which will make every effort to run total garbage that any competent user could see is garbage vs Python or Go which have very strict tooling to keep stupid users on the rails. I think it's the reason python is winning even though the runtime is such a poor performer.

been programming for ages, and just started getting into Go. The Go book by Kernighan is really quite good. Full of excellent explanations of the design choices made in the language and the exercises are better than any I have ever seen. They really lead you into self discovery of the subtleties you may have missed and need to understand.
thetanil··on EA to buy Dirt Rally-maker Codemasters for £1B
Don't worry, you will be able to buy this exact same game for 60$ per year for eternity now
thetanil··on Goodreads plans to retire API access, disables existing API keys
A search engine which only lists sites which adhere to a set of rules / quality standards is the only answer I see here. The question is would people use it? I don't think so. They won't even use DuckDuckGo and similar which attempts to address the issue for themselves but at the same time provide a complete index. Not enough care / awareness.
thetanil··on The U.S. Inability to Count Votes Is a National Disgrace. and Dangerous
there are 100 things which are disgraceful about the american electoral process. Whether or not the votes are counted in one day or three is probably the least important of all of them.
thetanil··on Media buyer: Facebook updates have ‘wrecked the ad platform on the backend’
This makes it sound like FB has done something to improve the tool for the users.

thetanil··on Ask HN: What are the least competitive consumer and enterprise markets?
i'm in automotive, and we've looked into this a few times for commercial fleet telemetry. It's just impossible to beat the pricing of cheap mobile phones when they have the volumes.

thetanil··on Smartphone contact tracing has failed everywhere
Or do it like Germany, no centralized info store.
thetanil··on Smartphone contact tracing has failed everywhere
Ask me if I will volunteer to give apple or google any more information than they already collect and my answer will always be no. I don't care what the reasoning. Germany did it right.

thetanil··on Show HN: UIDesignDaily – soft launch with 600 open-source designs
nice designs, don't like the site. modal popups covering content bottom left, signup pop under my mouse when i tried to download, a bunch of icons and I don't know what any of they mean except the adobe ones. I clicked download and I was astounded that a download dialog popped up and not a newsletter signup. I guess that's coming. obnoxious
thetanil··on Programmer's critique of missing structure of operating systems
most dumb idea ever is a bit strong, but yeah. If you could get OSs to adopt this, then as an app writer, you're going to have to worry about how Microsoft's jacked up version of the standard broke your content when it was moved between computers or even OS versions. You'd have the UNIX/MS line ending problem not just in text files, but with every Type recognized by the database
thetanil··on Video Game Keyboard Diagrams
I had the idea to make a web site like this years ago, but it wasn't nearly this cool, even in my imagination. Nicely done!
thetanil··on Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020?
I also have anxiety. The way you deal with it is to talk with strangers. Start by expressing yourself more with the people you are already comfortable with. Something you might normally not share. Then start with chit chat with people who are less familiar. You will be chatting comfortably with people you don't know in no time. Isolating yourself is the wrong way and will lead you to dark places. I know. I'm better. It's scary, uncomfortable and totally worth it.
thetanil··on Show HN: Gter – A terminal for GUI apps
I don't get it. What can you do here that you couldn't otherwise? You already have a term and an xserver to make it work right?
