The best combo I have found is non-cloud smart devices and a solid firewall. I'm confident enough that my lightbulb isn't going to hack my Mac/Windows machine, and I can still control it when I'm at home with my phone. If I want outside control, then it's vpn time.
Also a lot of non-trash-strict places will take a mattress in the trash pickup if you just put it near the trash can and make it known it's trash. Also, for the same reason it's hard to sell a mattress, it's easy to buy one used in a new city. If you can afford to heat treat it, you can be sure theres no bed bugs, or if you have a job, buy a $200-$300 mattress from amazon - theyre surprisingly good these days.
I moved 10 times in the first 3 years I was on my own, and have done huge moves up/down since (up to a three bedroom, then decided I hated owning so much and downsized to a studio.) - no family, no savings, just a lot of manual labor/smart packing.
I think ops comment stands, unless you are used to some crazy nice cost of living (which is a different privilege).
Years ago, I'd have called myself a dying breed, but I don't think thats true,
As long as the host stays out of your way when you need (eg, anytime other than when you need them), it's rather quite nice. It's hard to beat the conversation you have over a glass of wine after dinner. I've made lifelong friends this way.
Sure, no one wants to stay in someone's studio with a wall divider, but thats absurd.
Beside, most drugs flowing into the US are from underground tunnel, or shipping container, or the back of a commercial truck. At one point they were buying used 747s, flying them full of coke to the US, and then just ditchiing the plane because they made way more than the cost of the plane.
AT&T is currently doing the same thing BT did to you. I closed my account and shipped back hardware a year ago. Since then, they have been reporting either a bill with a random number from $100-3,000 or 0, and being either on time or late or none. It's maddening.
