therealx··on Elon Musk, master promoter
To be fair, that’s one of the worst tunnels in any city. I’d rather drive into NYC.
therealx··on A “deepfake” is at the center of a harassment case, but what if it’s not faked?
Yes, this is standard in the forgery business - dust and speckle filter, drop the res, ensure the light is balanced, and maybe blur if you can get away with it.
therealx··on Cycling is more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
The thing that changes this is good public transport. Not buses - buses have a mindset issue. Subways, light rail, and bikes for the last mile.
therealx··on Modern CI is too complex and misdirected
I would think the build system would only build the binaries or other compiled source. The CI pipeline would build and test.
therealx··on iOS 14 and Facebook Pixel causing increase in PSL inclusion requests
BGP and DNS survive due to relative obscurity, despite everyone using it in some way. Web devs do not give a shit about BGP (sadly.)
therealx··on Screw it, I’ll host it myself
It's not "hopeless to manage", learn some networking and be forever rewarded. Same with learning to manage devices, servers, etc. I develop now but I'd be much less valiable without that background.
therealx··on Screw it, I’ll host it myself
Amen. I find generic scripts to be way more mangemaable. You can still use them with docker, but you can also just buy any Linux VM and go.

Also, easy to backup.

therealx··on Screw it, I’ll host it myself
It's 1000% worth it. The skills bleed over onto Mac, and now Windows. Best skills of my tech life, almost.
therealx··on Screw it, I’ll host it myself
Just firewall off all management interfaces and allow via IP as needed. It's still possible your webserver will get become vulnerable, but you'll prob here about it here if it is.
therealx··on SPAs Are Dead?
Isn't it so relieving now that the pendulum is swinging back?

I'm so glad I moved into C# and non-web dev/management and got out of that rat race. Tech always swings back and forth, but I'm so very happy to have made it past SPAs being the end all be all.

therealx··on GitHub investigating crypto-mining campaign abusing its server infrastructure
It seems fairly obvious once you trace the funding on a lot of nodes. Plus that court case that got dropped with the child porn guy - they dropped it because they refused to show how they found him. 0day most likely.
therealx··on Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up
So envious of your username :)
therealx··on WRT54G History: The Router That Accidentally Went Open Source
Thanks for connecting those dots for me.

Then you still get a FAILED: meson-install Permission denied: '/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/LV2' error, so change INSTALL_DIR_MAC in install.sh to~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/LV2 and install via the github page

therealx··on Money laundering via author impersonation on Amazon?
It's not too confusing to me. It gets the IRS off the trail of the actual person getting the money - they don't care that the IRS still wants money - they are confident that it wont get traced. It's truely obfuscation.
therealx··on Trump bans Alipay and seven other Chinese apps
People remember HIPAA poorly? Ive worked very closly in the industry, and I think it was a net positive. It could have been better, but it sure beat what was there.
therealx··on Zynga shuts down FarmVille after 11 years
Last I saw her, she had transitioned to WoW and was scraping by running conventions. I wish I remembered her last name, I'm curious what her daughter made of herself.
therealx··on Zynga shuts down FarmVille after 11 years
My favorite story: growing up, I was really good friends with this girl who's Mom was an Everquest dev (like, the first one.)

Post-launch, she became so addicted to her own game, she had to quit her job and lived in a small apt, forgoing clothes and only eaing the easiest of food.

At the time it was funny...

therealx··on Ten year study: No link between violent video games and aggressive behavior
Yeah, they totally are. You aren't able to, in detail, say, operate on someone while they write in pain. Or, slowly cut up someone with a swored and watch their organs fall out as you laugh and kick salt in it. You can't try and force an abortion by kicking a pregnant NPC down the stairs over and over. These are just items off the top of my head.

I am not saying I WANT or would play said game, but that level does not exist in these games.

therealx··on New coronavirus variant: What do we know?
The US is on target to have everyone that wants one jab'ed by June.
therealx··on Jaywalking decriminalization, 100 years after the auto industry made it a crime
What is WITH that subway? Military bases, small towns, everywhere.
therealx··on Show HN: An anti-book recommendation tool, to help you escape your echo chamber
Either op means that going into it, a lof of America was not firm in their predictions - people were firm last time, and a of them were wrong, so were weary to do it again.

It could also likely be that some states were small margins, and some districts even smaller. Overall, though, I agree with you.

therealx··on Team uses copper to image Alzheimer's aggregates in the brain
Use $15 worth of hireable Photoshop to create a decent looking image with all of them? Even just squares of profile photos put together, but I almost guarantee a better job could be easily done.
therealx··on Amazon owns more than $2B worth of IPv4 addresses
If only average grandma's were just limited to grandma's. I don't know a single person who isn't a gamer or IT person that can properly use a firewall as they exist now.
therealx··on Amazon owns more than $2B worth of IPv4 addresses
I'm well aware it's not a security feature and I know there are ways to punch holes, but in practice, a lot of machines are still relying on it. The number of IoT devices alone that would be screwed if they were public is massive.

Yes, everyone should have a hardware firewall, but we both know most people just buy the cheapest thing, and by bad large, real firewall features are mostly targeted toward higher end devices.

therealx··on Amazon owns more than $2B worth of IPv4 addresses
Of course it's more than enough, but it's still barely done. We should have co2 emissions under control too, but we don't.
therealx··on How the novel coronavirus has evolved
Setting aside the idea of intentional coverup, China is still the most likely area origin.

Normalized working/eating close to all animals, wet markets, pollution, lack of food care (incl refridgeration), unclean water, and more all make for a hotbed of potential disease.

therealx··on How the novel coronavirus has evolved
I know vitamine E acetate is a scourage in the vaping community, but I was under the impression that outbreak was a distincly different thing, at a different time.

Although the uninteresting answer is often true, I do dislike that people refuse to entertain anything remotely fringe. Some of the declassified CIA documents stated that they intentionally furthered this attitude as much as they could, as it allowed them to make many of thier projects dissappear.

What is the most promising theory of origin? A 5-10min search didn't help.

The lab theory is of course the most fun, but not the most probable. The fact that they were working on similar diseases, the lab was newish, and the country itself isn't exactly well known for IP security make me not discredit it as fast as I normally would.

The animal->human route via food (or less likely, bites/other contamination) seems to be most likely. It's happened plenty of times in the past, and given the SES level of the area and cultural norms, it could have definitely happened.

The rest of the ideas seem like a long tail where all of them have fairly obvious "gotchas" that make typing them out a waste, but I'd love to hear what other people think.

therealx··on Amazon owns more than $2B worth of IPv4 addresses
I want ipv6 as much as anyone, but we are not spending enough time preparing for NATs death. It's responsible for far more security than we as a collective would like to admit and there's a lot more we could be doing now to get ready.
therealx··on Amazon owns more than $2B worth of IPv4 addresses
Pretty sure youd have better luck purchasing a perpetual license to one from a top tier owner.
