thepumpkin1979··on Mindfulness may have been over-hyped
We hired him in a talent website, when I say he disappeared is because he was just unavailable to continue doing the voice over for us, he was not available for booking anymore. I suspect this company reached out to him, booked him heavily or something so he was not available for us.
thepumpkin1979··on Mindfulness may have been over-hyped
I can tell it’s a billion dollar business, I launched a Meditation app two months ago, we had good retention and users were loving the app. Then the guy we hired to do the voice over disappeared with no explanation so we couldn’t fulfill our promise of “daily meditation” because the voice was not the same. 15 days later I understood why: We received a Cease and Desist from one of the companies behind the top meditation and mindfulness apps in the AppStore. They certainly don’t want anybody to enter that niche.

thepumpkin1979··on Everest: A lightweight REST API client written in JavaFX
I can't believe JavaFX is still alive, it's been years since Silverlight and Flash died.
thepumpkin1979··on Rancher 2.0 GA
I've been using it with Cattle for more than a year now, I've saved thousands of dollars in PaaS bills thanks for my little Rancher cluster. I just setup a new Rancher 2.0 cluster controlplane and dashboard in Scaleway Paris with a Worker in Digital Ocean NY. I'm starting to migrate all my apps from the 1.6 to the new cluster. I haven't tried the new CI/CD thing, but it looked great in the training sessions.
thepumpkin1979··on DigitalOcean Introduces Kubernetes Product
Rancher 2.0 was just announced today, 100% Kubernetes-based https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16976934
thepumpkin1979··on Ask HN: How do you work with AWS?
I use the console to manage S3 buckets and credentials in IAM. EC2 instances are provisioned via Rancher.
thepumpkin1979··on AMD and Intel Had a Baby and It's a Beast
I can’t finish reading the article, it asks me to install an app.

thepumpkin1979··on CockroachDB is more scalable than Amazon Aurora for OLTP
I can not install Aurora in my servers
thepumpkin1979··on CockroachDB is more scalable than Amazon Aurora for OLTP
I could cost more but if CRDB is able to do it without vendor lock-in I don't think it's just SEO/Content marketing fluff, the blog post invites you to try it yourself anyway so I'd do that first and then call them bs.
thepumpkin1979··on CockroachDB is more scalable than Amazon Aurora for OLTP
I'd love to try Cockroachdb for a reasonably sized service but it's active-record adapter[0] doesn't work yet. I'm watching the repo to see what progress is made towards supporting Rails 5.

thepumpkin1979··on Why there are so many online mattress-in-a-box companies
Thank you, that was such a good read. So Casper won, does it make you hate them? I tend to dislike the winner when I read stories like this.
thepumpkin1979··on iOS 11.3 is available today
I read that they're shifting from launching everything together in one single event where some products might not be entirely ready to launch their updates when they are actually ready. is this part of that new schedule?
thepumpkin1979··on Show HN: A curated directory of engagement, retention resources and tools
Nice, check Designing for Empathy and Retention by DoorDash, it could be a good addition.

thepumpkin1979··on Run JavaScript on Cloudflare with Workers
Congrats, this is really great. Question, since it’s not based on Node.js there is no way to leverage on a regular package manager, how can I create reusable code between edge workers? How can I make an open source snippet without copy and paste?
thepumpkin1979··on Comparing AWS Lambda performance of Node.js, Python, Java, C# and Go
Ok, now being serious, they need to include a real example here. Whenever I run a Lambda function is to process something and make a call to at least one external service. I was a .NET developer for a long time and I seriously doubt .NET Core has been improved to the point where blocking http calls are handled better than in Go runtime. I may believe .NET Core may have some performance advantages in some CPU bound scenarios, but nothing more. Until then, this benchmark proves nothing.
thepumpkin1979··on V8 JavaScript Engine Release v6.5
Safari iPhone 7 here, it seems to be caused by Firefox Focus content blockers. I disabled it and it works fine now.
thepumpkin1979··on V8 JavaScript Engine Release v6.5
Off-topic: this page is really hard to read in a mobile browser, it freezes and when you try to zoom out it redirects to another post, I can't figure out what's wrong with it.

Edit: Seems to work ok with content blockers disabled.

thepumpkin1979··on [dead]
This is good news, I've been looking for alternatives to EC2 and was unable to switch to Scaleway or Vultr due lack of regions in the Americas.
thepumpkin1979··on How Tier 2 cloud vendors banded together to cope with Spectre and Meltdown

thepumpkin1979··on Ask HN: What did you work on in 2017?
hey, thanks for the feedback, I guess linking to my product can be considered as soft-launching it(both my company website and invoicing app at the same time). I fixed the typo, the contact form is on the works. You can reach me out by email: im at bithavoc dot io
thepumpkin1979··on Ask HN: What did you work on in 2017?
1) Got engaged :) 2) I built my own invoicing web app(breakdeck.com). 3) Developed an Electron app aimed at developer's productivity that I actually use 4) I published my first native Electron/Node.js module https://github.com/bithavoc/node-desktop-idle 5) Read 4/7 books I intended to read throughout the year. 6) Visited a new country

5 USD for 512mb of RAM, isn't that a bit excessive?
thepumpkin1979··on Rancher 2.0 container management platform
I've been been using Rancher for 6 months now and it has been a very smooth experience. They're incredibly careful with upgrades and their Release instructions are just a breeze to follow. I'm actually happy with Cattle but I understand Kubernetes won and we just have to accept it.
thepumpkin1979··on Venezuelan Opposition Leaders Detained at Gunpoint in Raids
