thepaulmcbride··on TypeScript: Branded Types
Anytime I’ve come across the need to do this, I’ve found a class is a better and less complicated solution.

I really like the pattern of value objects from Domain Driven Design. Create a class that stores the value, for example email address.

In the class constructor, take a string and validate it. Then anywhere that you need a valid email address, have it accept an instance of the Email class.

As far as I understand classes are the only real way to get nominal typing in TypeScript.

thepaulmcbride··on Vercel: Improved Infrastructure Pricing
Just got the email from them explaining the changes. It goes like this.

Vercel: We’re changing our pricing. Our community has told us we’re expensive. Also Vercel: Your bill is going up.

thepaulmcbride··on Google takes aim at SEO-optimized junk pages and spam with new search update
While Google makes money showing these ads to us, I don’t expect these changes will be for our benefit.
thepaulmcbride··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2024)
Would you consider someone without Go experience if they’ve got equivalent experience in Node? I’m very keen to learn Go, but haven’t used it professionally.
thepaulmcbride··on Universal domain types
I recently watched a talk he gave with the same title. It was excellent. Honestly having one of those planning/discovery meetings before any code gets written can prevent so many nasty problems.
thepaulmcbride··on Universal domain types
This reminds me a lot of value objects from Domain Driven Design
thepaulmcbride··on Video Game Module for Flipper Zero
The regional popup on that website blocked me from seeing the page. What an extremely hostile bit of UX!
thepaulmcbride··on Opensourcing a Developer Job Board
Yes, I actually published that shortly after this post. https://paulmcbride.com/posts/sunsetting-wecode-ni
thepaulmcbride··on Opensourcing a Developer Job Board
After almost 5 years of operation, WeCode NI has started to fail and I don't have the time required to keep it running. So I've decided to shut it down and make the code public.
thepaulmcbride··on Cloud Egress Costs
I’m a fan of them too. Their pricing gives me a “we will punish your success” vibe. I suppose that’s preferable to paying through the nose for not scaling.
thepaulmcbride··on Cloud Egress Costs
Offt, not a good look for Railway, Render or Vercel!
thepaulmcbride··on US needs much more than the IRA to get to net zero by 2050
Being from Northern Ireland, headlines like this always raise and eyebrow.
thepaulmcbride··on Show HN: Aviation navigation log on $20 receipt printer
I’ve been thinking about something like this but with an e ink display. I want something that has the frequencies and waypoints I need in case my iPad dies that isn’t reliant on power.

Very cool project!

thepaulmcbride··on Cheems, the Shiba Inu meme dog, has died
Eww gross, the sun
thepaulmcbride··on Launch HN: Tiptap (YC S23) – Toolkit for developing collaborative editors
Will schema versioning be coming to hoscuspocus or will this be locked behind a paywall? We’ve sponsored tiptap for a while now and I’d hate to be locked out of features because we need to self host.
thepaulmcbride··on Larne Craigyhill bonfire: 17000 pallets (2021)
Another example from a few years back. https://m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/3000-...

You can believe that an event mostly orchestrated by paramilitary gangs is above board if you wish, but I know first hand that many of these palettes are stolen.

thepaulmcbride··on Larne Craigyhill bonfire: 17000 pallets (2021)
They definitely notice.

https://belfastmedia.com/mystery-surrounds-source-of-thousan...

The red and blue pallets specifically are owned by just two companies. The pine pallets are stolen from local shopping centres etc.

thepaulmcbride··on Larne Craigyhill bonfire: 17000 pallets (2021)
Rarely are all of the things burnt paid for. A lot of the pallets etc are stolen from local businesses.
thepaulmcbride··on GitHub Introduces Passkey Support
I thinks the idea is that it has two factors built in. The password/pin is something you know. You still have to use it on a specific device though, which is the something you have.
thepaulmcbride··on Learning to Touch Type Again
I went through a very similar exercise recently and wrote about it (https://paulmcbride.com/posts/i-learned-how-to-type). I've yet to pick up an ergo keyboard, but I can absolutely type faster than I once could.

I found both monkey type and keybr to be super helpful.

thepaulmcbride··on Ask HN: Side projects making less than $2k MRR, what's your project?
WeCode NI (https://wecodeni.com) a job board for developer in Northern Ireland. It has paid me several thousand pounds over the last few years. This past few months have been quiet.

I’d be interested in a partner to help grow it and replicate for other cities.

thepaulmcbride··on Interop 2023: continuing to improve the web for developers
I’m interested to know what changes are planned for Form elements!
thepaulmcbride··on Death Clock
I’ve made this improvement now
thepaulmcbride··on Death Clock
I’ve fixed it now
thepaulmcbride··on Death Clock
Update: I have switched to a native html date input and made the URL shareable. For example, mine looks like this

https://thedeathclock.co/results?life_expectancy=81&dob=1991...

thepaulmcbride··on Death Clock
Alright, it’s open source, I built it in a few hours. Pull requests are welcome.
thepaulmcbride··on Death Clock
Oh good call!
thepaulmcbride··on Death Clock
Yeah, fair point. I'll try to improve that. Any idea on how you'd want to see it done?
thepaulmcbride··on Death Clock
Ha, that sounds like a bug. Unless you're a ghost? I built this in a couple of days, so definitely still have a few bugs!
thepaulmcbride··on Death Clock
Well this kinda popped off more that I expected it to!

A bit of background about this and how it was built: I started back to work this week after some time off over Christmas. This year the company I worked for decided to hold a creative week to help get us back into work. I ended up being just 3 days as we presented them all to each other on Friday.

I know this is definitely still rough around the edges, it was just something I slapped together in a few days. Conflating life expectance to where you are born is obviously not perfect, but again, only had a few days.

If anyone is interested in how it work, or wants to fix the things that annoy them about it, pull requests are welcome!
