themerone··on Halide developer on Leica's new iOS camera app
This is about the developer of the Halide IOS App, not the Halide language for image processing.
themerone··on [dead]
A 10% royalty payment is buried in the license. There is no mention of this on the website or github page.
themerone··on Google might keep your Pixel during a repair if you're caught using non-OEM part
This sounds like a clear violation of the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act, which would make it illegal in the us.
themerone··on Libadwaita: Splitting GTK and Design Language
Are we in a state where GTK4 is the GNOME toolkit and non GNOME apps will be permanently stuck on GTK3?
themerone··on Ask HN: How did RedHat Linux get it's first users?
If you want to follow RedHats path to success, you are going to need to build a time machine. It's foolish to think that whatever RedHat was doing 30 years ago is relevant today.
themerone··on CADmium: A local-first CAD program built for the browser
You just told the developer of a non-open source project to take your GPL code. That is a recipe for a copyright dispute.
themerone··on One day, a computer will fit on a desk (1974) [video]
The prediction wasn't for a desktop computer, it was for a home desktop terminal.
themerone··on Making a 3D modeler in C in a week
The crisp text is unimpressive. The typeface has no curves and there is no smoothing. That text will be crisp and blocky at any resolution.
themerone··on 500 Byte Images: The Haiku Vector Icon Format (2016)
When the format was developed nobody was rendering icon's at 128x128. PC Icons were 16x16 or 32x32. Mac's might have supported bigger icons, but it was still a long time long time before screen resolutions necessitated 64x64 icons.
themerone··on Run0, a systemd based alternative to sudo, announced
How is Wayland more complex than X?
themerone··on You can't just assume UTF-8
The BOM only tells you that your are not dealing with ASCII. You could encounter anything after it.
themerone··on Ask HN: How secure is desktop Linux? Is it stuck in the nineties?
It's not the point of open source, but it is an argument in favor. It's also been pretty thoroughly debunked. Vulnerabilities rates are comparable between open source and proprietary software.

Very little open source code is carefully audited, and the availability of source code also benefits bad actors.

I'm a huge proponent of open source, but security just isn't a strong argument.

themerone··on Why I hate your Single Page App (2016)
1. I wasn't replying to OP. 2. Angular has full support for server side rendering which eliminates all of the authors complaints. 3. When I started developing SPAs there were no frameworks, and it was significantly more work.
themerone··on Why I hate your Single Page App (2016)
Angular is the most productive platform I've worked with. I'm finishing projects in half the time it took before adopting angular. I highly recommend pairing Angular with Akita or Elf for state management.
themerone··on How engineers at Digital Equipment Corp. saved Ethernet
There's a surprising number of people who think you could magically expand the IPv4 address space in a backwards compatible manner.
themerone··on Jpegli: A new JPEG coding library
It's not just about the compression ratio. JPEG XL improvements in generational loss are reason enough that it should be the default format for the web.
themerone··on The customer has nuclear weapons
It's common in big companies too. My employer has to use a 3rd party supplier for Google Maps, because Google sure as hell isn't going to jump through the hoops necessary to become our supplier.
themerone··on Is Overleaf (online LaTeX editor) making $40M+ ARR and a unicorn?
I doubt there will ever be enough Latex users for Overleaf to become a billion dollar company.

I believe that chasing billions, is a big reason why a lot of niche tech startups die, but Overleaf has the potential to be a very successful small to medium size business.

themerone··on A Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet from Hell Slowed Williams' F1 Cars for Years
Excel is a drug, and a lot of junkies have no interest in quitting. I actually work on software that has been used to manage the development of race cars. A couple sister departments use excel for everything my app does and are too set in the ways to consider anything else.
themerone··on Mazda’s rotary engine in the age of the electric car
Aside from your suggestion violating the laws of physics, that's actually not how the Volt worked.

The original concept for the volt was that the engine would only generated electricity, but in production models, the engine was connected to the drivetrain.

themerone··on Monogon: A Linux userland in pure Go
How does this compare to gVisor?
themerone··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
Why would a driver think a ship's horn was signaling them?
themerone··on Ask HN: LLM + LVM = AGI ?
Not even remotely close.

For example, ask an AI to summarize the differences between a book and it's movie adaptation.

An AGI can answer this question, but current systems can only regurgitate answers from it's training data. If no humans write about it, it won't provide an answer or will hallucinate a wrong answer.

themerone··on Ask HN: Excel as a back end? Well now you can
I recently sat in on a demo of a complete accounting and invoicing system implemented entirely in excel.

Such things should not exist and be nuked from orbit.

Excel should not be used to create anything but spreadsheets and charts.

themerone··on DBeaver – open-source database client
I have a PowerGrep license. It's UI is so cluttered that I almost always find ways to make due with less capable alternatives.
themerone··on Scientists find genetic signature of Down syndrome in ancient bones
Reminds me of flood of positive comments on a video someone in my area posted of their dog "playing" with a deer. The deer was trying to kill the dog.
themerone··on Musk steps in after California bakery jolted by cancelled Tesla order
Yet another example of Tesla's immaturity as a company.

At the automaker I work with, somebody would be fired over this. Things like this only happen if someone breaks purchasing protocols.

themerone··on ASML dethrones Applied Materials, becomes largest fab tool maker
I expect that if their costumers had to choose between ASML keeping machines around for software testing or shipping every machine the can build, they would want the hardware.
themerone··on Ask HN: Why don't we use two mice at once?
I expect that most people would struggle to interact with two sections of the screen at once.
themerone··on It was almost impossible to make the blue LED [video]
Have you tried a sleep mask? I had to try a bunch before I found one (Manta Mask) that was comfortable and stayed on.
