I am curious as to what NASA did for the families of Grissom, White and Chaffee after their deaths. Since it wasn’t an actual flight did the ‘normal’ insurance pay out?

Way back in the day, late 1980’s, I had access to a tank of helium. I would purchase packs of large ‘party’ balloons, inflate them, tie several of them together and then attach a strip of aluminum foil several feet long. I would then launch the balloons and watch the foil glisten in the sunlight as it ascended.

It was all fun and games until I launched one group that was slightly too heavy and it wrapped around a power line. I had some explaining to do.

I always wondered if the Air Force base that was relatively nearby could get a primary return on the foil.

theflyingelvis··on FAA seeks public input on drone operations
I never stated that UAV’s are not a ‘risk’.

Edited: “It was never…” to “I never…” Didn’t realize that @looping__lui was referring to a different comment. And, I’m not trolling e_e.

theflyingelvis··on FAA seeks public input on drone operations
It’s the very inability of the hot air balloons to maneuver that makes them unsafe. There are countless balloon accidents where the craft are dragged along the ground, blown into power lines and other obstructions because the pilots have no real control of the flight path (other than limited control of altitude).

So, again, it’s my opinion that balloons are the real danger, not UAV’s.

theflyingelvis··on FAA seeks public input on drone operations
It’s interesting that a large number of the comments are formulaic in nature and state how dangerous the drones could be to the operation of hot air balloons.

As a fixed wing pilot for almost 30 years it seems to me that the real danger is with hot air balloons and their inability to safely maneuver and control their direction within the airspace and not the operation of ‘drones’ or UAV’s.

I realize that my opinion is probably not going to be popular but it’s just my opinion.

theflyingelvis··on Ask HN: Do you celebrate failures at work?
That’s fine and I agree. But, why ‘celebrate’ the things that fail? I don’t get it.
theflyingelvis··on Ask HN: Do you celebrate failures at work?
Why would anyone celebrate failure? Celebrating failure simply doesn’t make sense.

Learning from failure makes complete sense, but not celebrating it.

theflyingelvis··on Steering wheel falls off a new Tesla Y while driving on a highway
The Model Y owner stated that they were billed for the repair.

Two weeks ago I took my new Model 3 to Tesla and was also billed for a warranty repair. They removed the charge but only after I complained.

My opinion of Tesla has really declined since the purchase of my first Tesla in 2019. Probably will never buy another.
