theF00l··on How Singapore's government-run dating service works
Yes, for most countries. But people are quite young when they go to uni and change a lot between 18-25.
theF00l··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
So it can be inhumane then, by your definition?
theF00l··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
You are both conflating technical correctness with morality
theF00l··on Being ambitious and being a dad
I have nothing constructive to say but wanted to wish you good luck
theF00l··on Being ambitious and being a dad
Surprised to hear that an O'Reilly book will net you less than a month of work for a SWE in the US and some parts of Europe.

But I guess the reward is not the money but the expertise and signal.

theF00l··on The continuing "Q collar" scandal
That is fair, especially on this occasion. On the other hand I have found some of his material very helpful, particularly around sleep and helping me maintain my circadian rhythm.
theF00l··on Hello, me. It's been a while
I too try to practice stillness, through silence and meditation. I agree that it is challenging. In stillness, uncomfortable feelings will come up, before they can leave.

Imo, better than the alternative of avoidance. Yet somehow, it is marketed as relaxing. The relaxing part comes after one deals with the unrelaxing part.

theF00l··on Confessions of a Long-Distance Sailor
Just go. Maybe you'll meet her in the journey.
theF00l··on Depression has tripled in the last 15 years. Arthur Brooks about the cause
I think the previous generation of Hollywood films was not so egregious on this. There were a lot of normal looking famous actors: Bill Murray, Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro etc. Often playing good guys.

Now most actors in popular media are good looking to an uncanny level. Antagonist are beautiful too (in GoT as well).

It's not surprising if this negatively affects the psyche of the everyday person.

theF00l··on Software development with AI is starting to feel like cooking steak
At least in my experience, the 'software' people are VPs/management who push and push with short term thinking.
theF00l··on Humans missed 1 in 3 threats approving AI agent commands across 40k game runs
Sad state of affairs. At $day_job speed of delivery expectations are up due to LMMs. I presume that's a general sentiment. So more and more engineers around the world are pressing an enter key for yes over and over, mind and spirit only half there.
theF00l··on Disrupting supply chain attacks on NPM and GitHub Actions
The job can require you to
theF00l··on Jelly UI: Soft-body physics for native HTML form controls
I find clicking on these form controls very satisfying :)
theF00l··on Show HN: Picknplace.js, an alternative to drag-and-drop
Awesome! How do you think this compares to the pattern in iOS (and I think Android) where you hold an app icon and the rest start jiggling and then you can tap a folder to move it there (or also drag it).

They feel quite similar but am no UX expert.

theF00l··on iPhone Pocket
As a tech guy who found an interest in design and ancillary fields recently, I am curious to know more. I assume leather, merino wool, cashmere do provide extra value. But other than that I have no knowledge. Eg why would 500 pants be better?
theF00l··on Talent
Imo our reward system was originally used how parent comment describes, and it has been hacked by external stakeholders :)
theF00l··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
I find that very interesting and also thought of using Anki for that but decided it wouldn't be useful for me now.

Could you give me an example and how it helped you? Thank you :)

theF00l··on AI-Designed Antivenoms: New Proteins to Block Deadly Snake Toxins
That is interesting and I think it's a popular opinion. I think in line with the Epic of Gilgamesh or the Old Testament.

But allow me present another opinion.

Snakes don't do things they don't have to do. They don't kill for no reason (cf humans, cats). They do what they have to do, without much emotion or fanfare. They shed their skin and don't carry extra weight. In other cultures, a snake is a symbol of wisdom, rebirth and healing (eg the rod of Asclepius).

Outside the symbolic arguments, I think snake venom does have some research use (eg blood thinners) and some would argue snakes are mechanically cool.

Just another perspecive ofc, and I respect yours.

In the end, snakes want to survive in a competitive world.

theF00l··on Isaac Asimov describes how AI will liberate humans and their creativity (1992)
Copyright law protects the expression of ideas, not the ideas themselves. Favourite case law that reinforces this case was between David Bowie and the Gallagher brothers.

I would argue patents are closer to protecting ideas, and those are alive and well.

I do agree copyright law is terribly outdated but I also feel the pain of the creatives.

theF00l··on The blissful Zen of a good side project
I wonder if it's always a zero day. I think that things and ways of thinking create momentum. The more you netflix and chill, the likelier you are to netflix and chill.
theF00l··on Efficient German Language Learning: Is Anki the Answer?
In my journey (B2, C1 on a good day), using Anki on public transport was of great help for grammar, eg irregular past tense forms, verbs with prepositions, fixed phrases. Releasing these Anki decks is a future project because making them was a pain.

But for learning to actually use the language: books, documentaries, and ideally immersion.

theF00l··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
Some of us may still feel we had everything we needed before the iPhone!
theF00l··on 1935: Britain's First Milk Bar Opens
It would be nice to have a modern version of this imo. We are more aware as a society of the many disadvantages of alcohol. Granted, alcohol free alternatives exist but they may create a social dissonance with the rest of the patrons.

Plus alcohol is (perhaps understandably) taxed so heavily.

theF00l··on 1935: Britain's First Milk Bar Opens
Zelda: Majora's Mask! This is probably localization independent since it had cows inside iirc.

But in what other games?

theF00l··on The upstream cause of the youth mental health crisis is the loss of community
And on the employee side: "family", "tribe"
theF00l··on Rust went from a side project to the most-loved language (2023)
One thing that draw me to Rust was the ecosystem and community. I think the team has made a great effort to create good learning resources and people are happy to help.

Admittedly they are not very focused on absolute beginners but that is understandable and makes finding decent resources easier.

theF00l··on Is Java Still Relevant Nowadays?
I had never doubted whether Java is still relevant, until I saw an article trying to convince me Java is still relevant.
theF00l··on Switzerland Makes Open Source Software Mandatory for Public Sector
My experience was struggling a lot to integrate without German when I lived in Zurich. Then I learnt German and struggled with Swiss German.

Great standard of life but can be isolating for some people. Unless you are happy sticking to the expat bubble, nothing wrong with that.

theF00l··on A Philosophy Professor's Final Class (2023)
I completely understand your point but would like to point out that quite a few philosophers were peculiar characters that did spent a lot of time outside the library too. Sometimes debating (eg Athenians), sometimes political activities (eg Sartre), some spending time on theology too (Kierkegaard, Aquinas).

I think for many philosophy was a way to understand life and the world around them.

theF00l··on A Philosophy Professor's Final Class (2023)
Michael Sugrue was exceptional and I am grateful to have watched his lectures.

His lecture on Marcus Aurelius has the most views on YT. I also recommend his lectures on Nietzsche and Sartre/Heidegger.
