thdrdt··on Fast Inverse Square Root
Sometimes you can even get away by dropping the square completely:

  if (x2-x1) - (y2-y1) < (x4-x3) - (y4-y3) then ...
I once used this in a path tracer to speed things up a little. The results where less accurate but sometimes this can be used as trade-off.
thdrdt··on Is it better to plant trees or let forests regrow naturally?
Planting trees can help to regrow a forest naturally.

For example planted trees can provide shade for seedlings.

This is what I like about the Groasis projects. They create special planters so they can plant trees in deserts. Most of the time they choose very hard trees but with the intention to make it possible for other trees to grow.

thdrdt··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
For me it was a free email account when you had to be invited for gmail.

Then I got an Android phone and used the account for it. Then I used the calendar app which used the same account.

So it vendor lock-in all the way.

But I already migrated my email to a VPS and will migrate my calendar and contacts as well.

But this is not something everybody knows how to do.

thdrdt··on Rendering photo-realistic glass in the browser
Erich Loftig has been working on a path tracer for ThreeJs for some time: https://github.com/erichlof/THREE.js-PathTracing-Renderer

The glass examples also look very promising.

thdrdt··on Jailbreaking Used Teslas
This is the reason Rich Rebuilds stopped rebuilding Teslas. It is as if you don't own the car.
thdrdt··on 2020's fastest-rising tech jobs? Programming language PHP leads the way
There are multiple reasons, but one I like most is how easy it is to deploy.

And because you don't need build tools you can deploy it as easily years later.

Also while developing you can just hit F5 or rerun a PHP script in your console compared to waiting for a build.

thdrdt··on Governments Worldwide Consider Ditching Daylight Saving Time
You already can get rid of time zones by only using UTC.

But is is not very practical.

The time zone communicates the part of the day in any place around the world.

thdrdt··on Governments Worldwide Consider Ditching Daylight Saving Time
With so many analog clocks this is not going to be a realistic option.

That's why UTC is fine. It is based on the sun time.

thdrdt··on Leveraging a 3D printer “defect” to create a new quasi-textile
Gcode for this type of 3d printer is very easy to understand and generate.

Some years ago I did some experiments with 3d printing in 3d (printing wire frames in 3d).

But it takes time to get the feed rates and print speeds right.

Edit: an example of wireframe printing: http://www.creativeapplications.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/...

thdrdt··on Multi-screening may mess with your memory
Nothing new here. Context switching will drain your brain.
thdrdt··on $30 DIY Kilowatt Wind Turbine (2017)
I believe you are right. As far as I know VATs are a solution for areas with turbulent wind only. To generate at least some wind power.
thdrdt··on PHP 8: Before and After
But your IDE could understand your code for years with:

  /* @return MyObject */
Returning an array with unknown items has always been bad practice imho.
thdrdt··on You can no longer reinstall CS 2 or 3 even if you have the original disks
This is the reason why I never buy an eBook with Adobe Digital Editions anymore.

They should call it rent instead of purchase.

thdrdt··on The physiological effects of slow breathing in the healthy human
Yesterday I watched Pierre Capel explain the Wim Hof method.

He explains that you can change the pH levels in your body with breathing techniques. And this alters how your nerves are working.

Very interesting: https://youtu.be/hJ7zbsRM0-c

thdrdt··on Seismometer noise includes storms, 'footquakes' from soccer matches (2011)
In 1994 Rage Against the Machine was performing at Pinkpop (Netherlands) and the audience caused an earthquake of a magnitude 1 on the Richter scale.

That is a lot of energy, but still at the bottom of the Richter scale. According to Wikipedia: "Microearthquakes, not felt, or felt rarely. Recorded by seismographs.", occurring several million times per year.

Seismographs are just very sensitive.

thdrdt··on Raymarching with Fennel and LÖVE
I am a little confused by this article. Since real 3d objects are used why not use ray tracing (ray surface intersection)?

As far as I know raymarching shines for scenes without real 3d objects. Rays are marched because a function determines if something should be rendered at some point along the way.

But still a useful article with a lot of good info.

thdrdt··on I miss Microsoft Encarta (2019)
I miss the state of development from that time.

I was developing multimedia CD content with software like Director and Authorware[1]. We had a project and when it was released the project was clearly done. Today projects don't finish because continuous integration is a never ending story.

[1] I also miss this kinds of visual programming sometimes. Authorware was very underrated imho.

thdrdt··on Moxie Marlinspike has a plan to reclaim our privacy
In Dutch we have a saying: The best helmsmen stand on the shore. (Those who watch always know better than those who do.)

I also think there is some envy in it. Some people wish they had the same success and only can criticize in envy.

Fact is right now Signal is the only safe option for a messenger that hides your messages and other meta data.

thdrdt··on Moana Motunui Renderer on GPU
All Blender movies can be downloaded for this reason: https://cloud.blender.org/open-projects

Last month they discovered a bug in Blender that was the cause of very slow hair rendering. The fix dropped render times for some scenes from 4 minutes to 40 seconds.

So it can indeed be useful to check if things can be improved for old movies.

But I am not sure realtime is an option right now. Most movies also use post processing per frame wich also takes some time.

thdrdt··on We deleted the production database by accident
When a server runs out of memory a lot of strange things can happen.

It can even fail while in the middle of a transaction commit.

So transactions won't fix this.

thdrdt··on Microsoft just force restarted my Windows PC again to install more unwanted apps
Last week my thermostat had an update. After a reboot it showed an ad on the homescreen replacing a tile I put there.

What is going on in this world that some people think this is ok?

I will never update the device again and disconnect it from the internet. So the people who thought it was a good idea gained absolutely nothing.

It is also the reason I keep using Linux.

thdrdt··on Hacked billboards make Teslas see phantom objects causing them to swerve or stop
Some places in the Netherlands tested those. Imho they don't work as advertised. On a picture they might look 3d but when you driving towards them your brain knows the perspective doesn't change and doesn't trick you into thinking it is 3d.

The effect is more like: What is this for strange art!?

thdrdt··on Indoor Mapping Data Format
:) this is great (I kind of hate shopping).

But on a more serious note: I work a lot with this kind of software but the biggest problem is reliable map data.

It doesn't matter how fast your matrix is generated and how good your fleet/order optimization is, when a truck is routed in the wrong direction of a one way street because the map data was not correct, you might as well draw a route on a map yourself.

thdrdt··on Ask HN: Why are there no open source 2d printers?
"In the 3D printing world, there are plenty of open source choices, ..."

The 3D printers you are talking about are very simple. Those are Fused Deposition Modeling and StereoLithography printers.

But there are also 3D printers that work like 2D printers. For example Selective Laser Sintering and PolyJet printers. Just like 2D printers they are very hard to make. Those type of printers are also not available as open source choice.

thdrdt··on What Color Is This? Part 2
Exacty what I was thinking. Some years ago I also tried this and had great results by just resizing the image first to something like 100x100 pixels.
thdrdt··on HomePod Mini
Ehm $25/y to play your own music!?

I don't get it.

thdrdt··on Police killings more likely in agencies that get military gear, data shows
Jocko Willing was asked about the issues with the police (in the US).

His response was very insightful. He observed that most problems boiled down to lack of training.

For an untrained cop an arrest can be very stressful. This then can result in using way too much force.

I believe he also mentions this in the Joe Rogan podcast: https://youtu.be/iUhdc1GAddk

thdrdt··on A 20-year-old CRT monitor can be better than a 4K LCD (2019)
The only thing I miss are the resolutions. 15 years ago I had a Sony Trinitron running at *XGA. Today most monitors are still HD. And even most 4k monitors are in fact sharper HD displays.
thdrdt··on Car Paint Colors Have Gotten More Boring over the Years
People became too focused on money.

Focus on money almost makes everything less fun.

It used to be that people just bought a yellow car because they like it.

But when you do that today some people will say 'but what about the resell value?'. This will make you question your decision.

People are becoming less and less authentic. This sucks.

Just buy a car you like. Having a good time is more important than resell value.

thdrdt··on Viral effects are not network effects
The viral effect can be the first step to a network effect.
