thazework··on Open Book Touch: open-source e-reader
>There are no physical buttons on the front

Not a selling point. You shouldn't be aloowed to call it an e-reader if it doesn't have physical turn page buttons..

thazework··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
GEO blocking is not the same as blocking based on nationality. I'd like(?) to think someone in this decision chain realized "restricting to US nationals" meant effectively restricting it to all and chose this route knowing Antrophic would need to just pull the model (so engaging in censorship without calling it that, possibly less susceptible to court challenges).

thazework··on Who Wins and Who Loses in Prediction Markets? Evidence from Polymarket
no fuck that. We should definitely complain about AI written content, and we should ban anyone who wants to keep people ignorant of time wasting bs comments.

As a side note, the AI popularized usage of the word 'clean' to denote proper is physically revolting to me.

thazework··on Listening to Mozart's sonata K. 448 enhances verbal working memory performance
I left out what may be the most important word from title - 'passively'. No talking, no phones. I wonder if listening to any other musical piece while doing nothing would not confer similar benefits.
thazework··on Hydra: Vehicles on the island – 'After the works they abandon them here'
Hydra is fairly unique in that bikes, not just motorized vehicles, are prohibited on the island.

thazework··on The Sight and Sound “Greatest Films of All Time“ poll
Big Lebowski a glaring omission.

Rohmer deserves more than one film, Green Ray is not even his best.

thazework··on John le Carré's 'The Spy Who Came in from the Cold' is the ultimate spy novel
It's not a spy novel by any stretch but if you enjoyed TSWCIFTC you'll like For whom the bell tolls. The character portrayals are similarly ambiguous (among many other reasons to read that book)
thazework··on Israeli parliament passes law to limit judicial power
Illiberal democracy is a chimera. Hungary and Poland get to play make believe while safely ensconced in the European Union which they feign to detest. Elsewhere the equation is: no separation of powers = authoritarian regime of some kind // robust separation of powers = modern democracy. Even in ancient Athens there was gradual understanding that assembly decisions require constitutional review, hence the introduction of the γραφή παρανόμων
thazework··on Israeli parliament passes law to limit judicial power
You substituted the executive with the legislative which is telling, whether you did so in good faith or not. The reality is that Israeli parliament is weak and nearly wholly controlled by the government. Harari's point is that there is no force to counterbalance the executive other than the courts. If there was the court could possibly be weakened with democracy remaining somewhat intact. But of course the goal is not to restore checks and balances but unlimited executive power.

Yes secular Israelis could very well be toast if trends continue. What exactly do you think will be the fate of the messianic elements in that scenerio? On that note, happy tisha beav.

thazework··on Israeli parliament passes law to limit judicial power
As the current government is making abundantly clear, 67 borders are irrelevant. There are roughly the same number of Jewish and Arab people within the territory Israel controls.

thazework··on The Perfect Laptop
Recently took my 12 inch MacBook on a multi day hiking trip (it survived!). Anything heavier would have been a nightmare.
thazework··on Forget Spotify for news – let's fix the real problem (2017)
No need for bundling really. I subscribe to a major American news source for $2/month. Their algorithm figured out that's what i'm willing to pay and got it right. I assume that for most big publishers this could work (possibly through some process of price discovery and segmentation to capture those willing to pay more).

I also subscribe to a patreon for $3/momth - for small publishers this obviously works too (again alongside higher tier plan options).

The problem is the middle sized publishers, they likely need higher revenue per subscriber to survive.

thazework··on Quality of new vehicles in US declining on more tech use: study

thazework··on Own-goal football (2022)
Unless there is a scenerio where one team really doesn't want the other to get even a point?

Speaking of NHL and weird rules iirc there's an emergency goalie that can be pulled out of the crowd to fill in for either team.

thazework··on Own-goal football (2022)
As others have said it would not be offside under current rules, but to answer your question the only realistic way to defend against an own goal would be time wasting, faking injury, geberally keeping the ball away from the 16 yard box.

thazework··on How to Find a Missing Person with Dementia
Wandering is also a concern for children with autism, often very young children. They are often non verbal and drawn to water (0) which compounds the danger. Tracking solutions like AngelSense which is designed for children with special needs (with sensory sensitivity in mind so they don't strip it off) might also work well for people with dementia or Alzheimer's.

thazework··on America’s skepticism toward the first automobiles (1930)
I get what you're implying, and while you may not be wrong, this also depends on when you start the clock on the invention...the 'whitepaper' for the car first came out in 1495. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonardo%27s_self-propelled_ca...

thazework··on Preface to the Critique of Political Economy
'It is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, but their social existence that determines their consciousness.'
