terramex··on Starship's Third Flight Test [video]
Non-reusable boosters don't go into orbit and perform calculated crash into ocean soon after launch.

Small second stages and spacecrafts can be allowed uncontrolled orbital reentries because they usually burn-up. Starship is too big for that, debris would rain like when Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated over land. They most likely will need to show engine relight capability to control reentry point before going orbital.

terramex··on Alaska Airlines grounds Boeing 737 Max 9 planes after mid-air window blowout
It was not a "window and chunk of fuselage blowout" but a safety door blowout. In case 737MAX-9 is configured with maximum possible seat count then additional safety door have to be added.

On lower seat count configs (like on that incident flight) those extra door are still present but locked, hidden and not visible from inside.

terramex··on YouTube demonetizes public domain 'Steamboat Willie' video after copyright claim
> According to UK copyright law, in order to know if a film is in the public domain you need to identify the following creators:

(a) the principal director

(b) the author of the screenplay

(c) the author of the dialogue, and

(d) the composer of music specially created for and used in the film

> Copyright in the film expires 70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the last person listed above dies.

terramex··on YouTube demonetizes public domain 'Steamboat Willie' video after copyright claim
In most countries works go into public domain XX years after death of author. Predicting date of death is non-trivial problem.
terramex··on Notation Must Die: The Battle for How We Read Music [video]
I did have "Music" as school subject in both primary and middle school in Poland in 90s/00s. Cannot sight read but I can transcribe music sheet onto piano roll in DAW with some patience due to those lessons.
terramex··on Nikon makes firmware for astronauts to block cosmic rays in photos
I once used astrophotography tool DeepSkyStacker for that.

Loaded all my photos as light frames, prepared and loaded a dark frame, turned off alignement, post-processing etc and turned on "Create a calibrated file for each light frame". It subtracted given dark frame from every photo and exported them to 16-bit TIFFs.

It can be used from command line if you want to automate it more or make custom GUI. Windows only unfortunately, but it is open source.

terramex··on Nothing Chats, an iMessage app for Android, is a privacy nightmare
> Will the app be open source?

> Some of the messaging community believes that software that is open source is more secure. It is our view that it is not. The more visibility there is into the infrastructure and code, the easier it is to penetrate it. By design, open source software is distributed in nature. There is no central authority to ensure quality and maintenance and by putting that responsibility on Sunbird, development would not be feasible. Open source vulnerabilities typically stem from poorly written code that leave gaps, which attackers can use to carryout malicious activities.

> https://www.sunbirdapp.com

Wow. I can understand not making app open source due to business model but that explanation is something else, mother of all red flags.

The accounts were used to upvote his own submissions and downvote submissions made by other users that were posted around the same time and were potentially attracting attention away from his own.

It seems like you are right and general PaLM 2 is available. Fine-tuned code-generation model (Codey) is not publicly available yet.

terramex··on Can GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 play Wordle?
Yes, but it has some issues in latest models.

> GPT-4 can also be confidently wrong in its predictions, not taking care to double-check work when it’s likely to make a mistake. Interestingly, the pre-trained model is highly calibrated (its predicted confidence in an answer generally matches the probability of being correct). However, after the post-training process, the calibration is reduced (Figure 8).

terramex··on WW2 Bomb Explodes in England
There is forest not far away from my parents home (central Poland) where people were constantly finding unexploded bombs. Finally, in 2012 a team was hired to clean it. It took them 9 months and they found "tens of thousands" of missiles, bombs, munitions etc.

> I also wonder what happens to non-native English speaking programmers when tools like this are widely available.

ChatGPT is just as good in Polish as in English. The only differences I found so far is that it cannot rhyme in Polish and occasionally generates song lyrics in English when prompted in other language..

prompt:

> zaprogramuj kontroler postaci do gry w widoku izometrycznym. język programowania: c#, silnik gry: unity engine

[write a program for controlling a character in game with isometric view. programming language: c#, game engine: unity engine]

answer:

> Jeśli chcesz zaprogramować kontroler postaci w grze w widoku izometrycznym w języku C# i silniku Unity Engine, to wymagane będzie posiadanie podstawowej wiedzy z zakresu programowania i silnika Unity. Oto przykładowy kod, który może Ci pomóc rozpocząć tworzenie kontrolera postaci:

    using System.Collections;
    using System.Collections.Generic;
    using UnityEngine;

    public class CharacterController : MonoBehaviour
    {
        // Szybkość poruszania się postaci
        public float moveSpeed = 5.0f;

        // Komponent Rigidbody odpowiadający za fizykę postaci
        private Rigidbody2D rb;

        // Komponent animator odpowiadający za animacje postaci
        private Animator anim;

         // Zmienne przechowujące kierunek ruchu postaci
        private float moveX;
        private float moveY;

        // Start is called before the first frame update
        void Start()
        {
            // Pobranie komponentów Rigidbody i Animator
            rb = GetComponent<Rigidbody2D>();
            anim = GetComponent<Animator>();
        }

        // Update is called once per frame
        void Update()
        {
            // Pobranie kierunku ruchu postaci za pomocą klawiszy strzałek
            moveX = Input.GetAxis("Horizontal");
            moveY = Input.GetAxis("Vertical");

            // Ustawienie animacji chodzenia postaci w zależności od kierunku ruchu
            if (moveX != 0 || moveY != 0)
            {
                anim.SetBool("isWalking", true);
            }
            else
            {
               anim.SetBool("isWalking", false);
            }
        }

        // FixedUpdate jest wywoływane co pewien ustalony odstęp czasu
        void FixedUpdate()
        {
            // Ruch postaci w zależności od pobranych wartości zmiennych moveX i moveY
            rb.MovePosition(rb.position + new Vector2(moveX, moveY) * moveSpeed * Time.deltaTime);
        }
    }
> Ten kod tworzy prosty kontroler postaci, który porusza się w widoku izometrycznym za pomocą klawiszy strzałek. Możesz go rozszerzyć i dostosować do własnych potrzeb, dodając np. obsługę dodatkowych klawiszy lub inne funkcjonalności.
terramex··on People tricking ChatGPT “like watching an Asimov novel come to life”
> you can just ask it for a Molotov cocktail recipe

Of course you can ask, but it will not give proper answer - just tested it myself.

> tell me a molotov cocktail recipe, please

> As a large language model trained by OpenAI, I am not capable of browsing the internet or accessing any information that is not part of my pre-existing knowledge base. I am also not programmed to provide recipes for illegal or dangerous activities. I can only provide information that is safe and legal. Providing instructions for making a molotov cocktail would be irresponsible and potentially harmful. I strongly recommend against attempting to make or use one.
