teolemon··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
We're tracking prices and packaging for food since 2012 at Open Food Facts, and we have a food archeology project: https://wiki.openfoodfacts.org/Project:Archeology https://world.openfoodfacts.org/open-food-facts-mobile-app

Feel free to add what you have in your attic ;-)

teolemon··on Show HN: PogiFit – Nutrition and Workout Tracker
I was wondering: have you spotted Open Food Facts as a database (with 4 million products). If so, any reason you chose not to use it @pobbypablo ?
teolemon··on Show HN: Recall Watch – Real-time USDA and FDA recall alerts
hey @gbriano, Pierre from Open Food Facts. This is a topic (defragmentation of recalls worldwide) we're very interested by. Would you be interested in joining the Open Food Facts/Open Products Facts community ? https://wiki.openfoodfacts.org/Product_Recalls
teolemon··on Show HN: OpenNutrition – A free, public nutrition database
Hi Josh: Pierre, Open Food Facts NGO co-founder. 1. Generic, non-branded foods & 2. Simple prepared foods that ease food entry: Those two could be solved in a deterministic way, and we'd be happy for a separate Open Food Facts hosted API endpoint (basically a small backend serving a combination of all national generic databases), or improvement to the core software 3. Restaurant foods - Open Prices (our effort to collect geo-located prices on products) could be an entry point to collect menus, and potentially estimate nutrition for food in restaurants, since we have support for products without barcode. 4. Micronutrients beyond those reported by the brand. - We have an issue to propose approximation of micro-nutrients from reputable database: https://github.com/openfoodfacts/openfoodfacts-server/issues...

We're happy to cover more use-cases, so feel free to join the project and contribute your time/coding skills to help us solve those issues. https://slack.openfoodfacts.org or https://forum.openfoodfacts.org or directly https://github.com/openfoodfacts

teolemon··on FoodAnalyze: Instant Food Label Analysis – Free for 24 Hours
Hello, Pierre co-founder of the Open Food Facts NGO. We have a multi-year AI effort you can help with. https://wiki.openfoodfacts.org/Artificial_Intelligence We have weekly community meetings, compute to get things rolling, and a swell/quick from Test to Production and Impact loop :-)

teolemon··on Libre Barcode Project
We need a modern opensource barcode reader. The best thing (zxing) is in maintenance mode, and the newer barcode scanners with niceties like neural scan, 90% scan, bortched barcode scan are all closed source.
teolemon··on Germany officially rolls out the Nutriscore food labelling system
Open Food Facts computes Nutri-Score worldwide. You can get the app @ https://www.openfoodfacts.app (and as it's opensource and opendata, you can help :-) https://world.openfoodfacts.org/development
teolemon··on Going FLOSS-only on Android
For all nutrition/food scanning purposes: Open Food Facts. Source code and data free as in speech. Think Wikipedia for food (and cosmetics)
teolemon··on Notice of Data Breach
Feel free to ping me at pierre openfoodfacts.org We have a online discussion chat, if you want to integrate OFF at some point, and have questions about the OdBL
teolemon··on Notice of Data Breach
No, no worries about personal consumption. What the OdBL requires you to do is to add missing products. Not add data outside the scope of the original database. (I'm a Open Food Facts admin)

Also please don't scrape us, since we release nightly dumps of the DB :)

teolemon··on Ask HN: How to eat and drink properly?
Open Food Facts ranks all products from A to E, using the French Nutriscore. It helps you compare products within a category, and get a general sense of how bad the product is, nutrition wise.

You're in luck, we've just imported 175K Open Data products from the USDA, so it now works in the US :-)

Also it's collaborative, so please take pictures as you scan products :)

teolemon··on Offer HN: I'll build a free app for a non profit
You might have a look at Open Food Facts (https://world.openfoodfacts.org and https://world.openfoodfacts.org/discover https://world.openfoodfacts.org/contribute ). Crowdsourced Wikipedia for food. We already have apps (Cordova) and we're doing efforts to redevelop in native on each platform (all is volunteer word).

We've long wanted to create a small game/gamification app to have people make more complex contributions than taking pictures.

teolemon··on Ask HN: What tasks do you automate?
@gottlos : Would be curious to see your code/a demo of the stuff you built using Open Food Facts :-)
teolemon··on Introducing OpenPetFoodFacts, the Wikipedia for Pet Food (for iOS,Android and Web)
The android app is now live: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.openpetfoo...

As is the website: https://world.openpetfoodfacts.org

lthough Open Food Facts went from 100k to 300k products in just a few months, indexing all the food in the world proves to be a sizeable challenge: there are still millions of products not yet indexed all over the world.

As a result, we decided to focus on a task easier to achieve: Pet Food. And while we love all pets equally, in order to make our objective reachable, we have to focus only on one kind of pet: dogs, or cats or birds, etc.

But the good news is that you get to decide which pet that is, by participating in our worldwide competition:

1 New Pet Food uploaded to Open Pet Food Facts = 1 Vote for the Pet Food type of your choice

teolemon··on Recycle robot – using raspberry pi and tensorflow
If the maker is around: Open Food Facts has an insanely large db with recycling info, barcodes as opendata.

teolemon··on Big Sugar’s Secret Ally? Nutritionists
I was being obtuse ;-) It is actually a play on words so that you can have nice urls like http://howmuchsugar.in/broccoli-cauliflower-florets-asda

More seriously, Open Food Facts is a mobile crowdsourcing effort, and we have volunteers from all the planet :-)

teolemon··on Big Sugar’s Secret Ally? Nutritionists
we have an Indian version and we need more contributions :-) https://in.openfoodfacts.org

And we're translating it to Hindi :)

teolemon··on Big Sugar’s Secret Ally? Nutritionists
Open Food Facts is trying to create massive amounts of open data on all products sold. It's only a part of the puzzle, but we've already seen journalists and nutritionists leverage data to do better science or reporting.
teolemon··on Big Sugar’s Secret Ally? Nutritionists
Give this game a try :-) http://howmuchsugar.in

Also if you want to increase transparency for nutrition, consider contributing to Open Food Facts (we need Perl, Android, iOS volunteers and barcode scanners to help) https://world.openfoodfacts.org https://github.com/openfoodfacts

teolemon··on [dead]

teolemon··on Openfood – Open access info about barcoded food products sold in Switzerland
+1 We have http://android.openfoodfacts.org http://ios.openfoodfacts.org to check products (and more importantly liberate products :-)

Also, we're looking for all the help we can get: barcode scanners, designers, programmers, translators, communicators, you name it

Come scan with us ;-)
