tempest_··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Ah yes the the party end of day cute beer (I think?)

Some German compound nouns are funny.

> 90% of what HR does is keep the company from getting sued

Which people would be wise to remember. HR is there to protect the company, not you or your co-workers. Sometimes these two things align but not always.

tempest_··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
Often you pay to have that posting. For a smaller company they def know that posting is still up. Likely they are just getting poor applications (or need to improve their posting because the right people are not seeing it)

In the age of LLMs every one is "tailoring" their resume to every posting.

tempest_··on Grok 4.7
The hook sends the text to another agent/context with a request to validate and return a good or bad + reason response. Every request is a fresh context.

https://code.claude.com/docs/en/hooks-guide#agent-based-hook...

tempest_··on Grok 4.7
Your best bet is to use hooks and inject it after every file edit / response by first running the content through haiku and asking if it is asd 100 ste.

It burns more tokens but is the only way to get tolerable text.

tempest_··on Rate limits on GitLab.com are changing
I assume this is because of LLM scraping.
tempest_··on Alternatives to MinIO for single-node local S3
Define scale.

When I tried minio 5 years ago it choked pretty quick on storing billions of objects

tempest_··on JetKVM Mini
I use a monitor for this.

Just hit a button the bottom and it swaps to the other input and I keep the keyboard / mouse plugged into the monitor and it goes where the input goes.

tempest_··on Carney's Bid to Make Canada an 'Associate Member' of the EU
If he is successful that would provide a road map for other nations to turn away from US hegemony and make deeper connections with Europe instead. Probably makes it easier that Canada is western and a commonwealth country. Carney definitely has the experience and connections in Europe to have a good chance at success.
tempest_··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
You might get your 100 dollars but google will ban you / stop doing any business with you the minute you start that so you better be sure you don't need your account or google services going forward.
tempest_··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Why would they?

Every one else is raising prices at so they will too.

tempest_··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
I fucking hate it.

It encodes context it needs into doc comments and regular comments that make them in insufferable to read and so verbose because the comments contain info on other parts of the code base (that might have changed since that comment was written) but were useful to the model for its implementation. I have so far found no way to stop claude from doing this. It will sometimes do it with hand holding but the moment a task takes a slightly large amount of context its back to the word barf.

tempest_··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
Windows is not really a growing user base in a lot of places it is in decline.

Most "internet users" are mobile. The ones using windows are doing it from work laptops that are locked down and use edge (chrome).

If windows was a growing market MS would not be so far down the extraction path they have gone with the OS.

tempest_··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
Being beholden to Google who might decide that the risk of antitrust is lower than the price they are paying for that search box is a pretty precarious place to be in.
tempest_··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
They are in a tough place.

They dont have the advantage of owning the OS (android/chrome and iOS / Safari) nor the advantage of advertising on the google home page like chrome.

The "customers" they are courting are security/privacy zealots who constantly want them "just work on the browser" but never seem to have an answer on how to pay for that.

I am hoping the advent of LLMs allows more entrants into the space at a faster speed. Time will tell. Maybe as FF dies ladybird will take over.

tempest_··on No AI Fridays
Difference between taking your own notes and skimming someone else's.

I have found in the last year I "get more done" but I learn less. Whats even worse is if I burn though my token quota I am less likely(and less able) to "switch to manual". LLMs make an ocean of decisions and assumptions very quickly and if you don't slow it down very intentionally (and lose the promise of the AI providers are pitching) you will quickly not have a good idea of how systems work.

tempest_··on IBM Unveils Next Generation Dual-Architecture Processor for IBM Z and LinuxONE
Sure, but there are very very few new consumer banks.

Most of the existing ones already have mainframes because they were early adopters.

tempest_··on IBM Unveils Next Generation Dual-Architecture Processor for IBM Z and LinuxONE
At this point no one is buying into mainframes are they?

So they are just selling to the existing pool of users for which the price just has to come in under the cost/risk of rewriting all their ancient stuff.

tempest_··on GitHub Outage Tracker: Is GitHub Cooked?
Our GitlabCE instance has been sitting in the racks for nearly two years with almost 100% uptime running on 10 year old xeons that have long since paid for themselves.

Of course it is not free of all management but for our use case it is working.

There are hiccups with the CI runners from time time but nothing major and we have another machine in another rack that serves as a backup which can be brought up ~< 20 minutes.

I know companies have long since tossed their expertise for hosting their own stuff in favour of SaaS but at some point its hard to beat the up time of a single machine.

tempest_··on I gave Qwen 3.8 27B a reverse-engineering job and it finished in 30 minutes
Which is exactly why we saw 1000s of ' "I" rewrote <mature software> in rust' posts last year when agentic coding really took off.

Agents (even ones powered by small models) do reasonably well when provided an oracle to work against.

tempest_··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
You mainly get this because honestly I was already happy with the existing product. The main focus of this post is not something I was really looking for and is a nice addition but I would still be using the existing product regardless.

Basically I just want search that I can actually filter are returns relevant useful results.. This adds an extra facet that I might filter on from time to time but the main ones, which are time and exact strings, are the reason I use the product.

tempest_··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
They are just trying to close the loophole from the scrapers.

They are selling content to google et al for their LLMs and they don't want to give it away for free.

tempest_··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
No, but I am not in the US
tempest_··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
Maybe for you.

tempest_··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
I've been enjoying Kagi for the last couple years.

Even as LLMs slurp up most of the internet and replace search I think Kagi is still useful.

Reddit has recently blocked access to old reddit without an account and the ability to filter out stuff like that is useful.

tempest_··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
Nah fuck the companies and their horse shit.

99% percent of them intentionally turn the "decline" choice into a 5 - 10 step game of dark patterns even though the EU policy says it should be equally easy to decline. They know its bullshit but they also know the chance that someone will drag them through court is low.

tempest_··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
Best we can do is a full screen model or annoying toast telling users we dont use cookies and click 4 to 7 check boxes to agree.
tempest_··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Yes, and I prefer that term because no one but claude ever talks to me using the word seam every other paragraph.

I have instructions which is confidently ignores to never use seam and instead say interface.

tempest_··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
I have gotten to the point that when it throws a wall of text at me I demand a diagram heavy primer from "first principles". This helps a bit but is a token burner for sure since CC seems to (and literally) be paid by the word.
tempest_··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
"seam" is apparently... according to Claude itself a term from 'Working Effectively with Legacy Code' by Michael Feathers which I have not read. All it took was for one sub agent to use this term and it stated using it everywhere all the time. I have not read the book and prefer other terminology but it only takes 1 sub-agent or 1 usage in the context before it poisons everything else.
