temp8964··on Infants' sense of pain is recognized, finally (1987)
Huge downvoting and flagging game is observed. What a stupid website this is.
temp8964··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
> Signs include a breakdown or suppression of a free press, simplification of the political spectrum, identification of and processing of enemies of the state, weakening of the rules and protections of government and so on. A shift from the idea of equality of all (protection of minorities) towards the will of the majority.

The Chinese Communist Party has all the stuff you listed here.

temp8964··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
LoL. This is not a definition.
temp8964··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
What’s your reasonable definition of far-right?
temp8964··on Stanford’s war on social life
Soulless is the essence of postmodernism. I have no doubt if the admin can remove the traditional buildings, they will replace them with all cubical buildings. Yelling for diversity and at the same time replacing everything with grey color rectangles and squares is their cultural revolution.
temp8964··on FTC acts against private equity firm’s acquisition of veterinary clinics
Totally agree, capturing the market should get government approval first. All the chain businesses should be banned, of course the ones you agree with can remain open.
temp8964··on FTC acts against private equity firm’s acquisition of veterinary clinics
Come on! Navie understanding of the market/society is a virtue. Profit is always bad for public good. The market is just failing everywhere. Captial investment is ruining everything. Downvotes prove you are wrong.
temp8964··on Ask HN: Is it the “worst” time to buy a house?
There isn’t much bubble in the housing market. The supply simply can’t keep up with the demand. This is not the best time to buy, but not the worst either.
temp8964··on 10x (engineer, context) pairs
Did I say don’t interpret 10x in a superficial silly way? A runner can be 10x better than another runner, but 10x better is not 10x faster.
temp8964··on 10x (engineer, context) pairs
Of course 10 can’t be interpreted in a superficial silly way, otherwise many postdocs can be considered as 10x Einstein.
temp8964··on 10x (engineer, context) pairs
There’s 10x in almost every profession, why is engineering different?

If you take physicists with Ph.D. plus 3 years of post-doc as the baseline, of course top physicists are 10x the baseline. And don't interpret the 10x in a superficial silly way which makes post-docs stronger than Einstein.

This goes the same in sports, arts, academics, etc. As long as the field has enough depth for growth, the top players can easily be 10x compare to the majority.

temp8964··on We got Linux on the iPhone, iPad and other idevices
I don't know anything about these. But would opening up iPhone make it easier for authoritarian governments like China to install backdoors on your iPhone?
temp8964··on Dropbox deletes Rick and Morty creators account for secret TOS violation
Of course, in these cases the company shouldn’t delete the stolen accounts either. They should lock the account , not delete.
temp8964··on Dropbox deletes Rick and Morty creators account for secret TOS violation
No. It's not just to write the code. To fake a six-month legitimate use, the spammer also needs to run the code for six months, it takes lots of resource to do so.

To avoid detection, you can't just make API calls for six months. You have to run the official client on the machine for six months, and then the official client can collect more data on your usage pattern. Imagine the cost to run hundreds / thousands those accounts.

temp8964··on Dropbox deletes Rick and Morty creators account for secret TOS violation
How many spammers invest months / years to upload and modify content to fake legitimate user accounts?
temp8964··on Dropbox deletes Rick and Morty creators account for secret TOS violation
Synology has its own sync apps. You can also use NAS to host NextCloud, which has sync apps too.
temp8964··on Dropbox deletes Rick and Morty creators account for secret TOS violation
I doubt you can communicate to their customer service bots.
temp8964··on Dropbox deletes Rick and Morty creators account for secret TOS violation
But do they have to delete the flagged account directly?

Also, can't they distinguish a spam account from a legit account based on the account history? I can't see why this is a difficult problem to solve.

temp8964··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
I understand you have a strong believe that public good is not for profit, but this simplistic view is patently wrong. Public good and profit are not two things contradictory to each other. It is just very common in the market that businesses serve both profit goal and public good. It is 90% about how the world improves in a market dominant system. There is something fundamentally wrong in your worldview of the society and the market. But hay, I don't think I can change your mind.
temp8964··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
I am not sure how you can generalize from prisons to schools. Because private prisons are bad, so private schools are bad?
temp8964··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
There’s simply no private schools in poor districts to serve poor families. I am not sure how do you run the comparison.
temp8964··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
Private school tuitions are much lower than public school funding.
temp8964··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
If you give a business $15,900 per student ($1.59million per 100 students), they can run much better than most public schools, especially than those public schools in crappy school districts.
temp8964··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
Of course businesses and government programs are different.

If a business is not doing well, it will be defeated and shut down. If a government program is not doing well, it usually asks for more money.

temp8964··on Walking the World: Seoul
Yes. You may have a few things in walking distance, but I don't believe you can have most things (schools, grocery, public library, gyms, bike ground, soccer ground, tennis court, etc.) in walking distance, you will need other transportations other than legs.
temp8964··on Walking the World: Seoul
There is almost no parking / loading problem for grocery in U.S. suburban. Grocery stores have huge parking lots.
temp8964··on Walking the World: Seoul
When I grew up, we didn't have food market close, except for breakfast. Grocerying was constant pain when the weather was not perfect, like too hot, too cold, or raining, snowing etc.
temp8964··on Walking the World: Seoul
This actually I do agree, USA food are almost tasteless on everything.
temp8964··on Walking the World: Seoul
As someone grew up in similar environment, I don't miss this at all.

I would rather buy grocery once a week with a huge load put in the trunk and drive back home, instead of buy a little bit every next day and walk home carrying the bags. I don't want to carry a gallon milk or a Watermolen, or push/drag a cart on the street.

I think people who envy this kind of environment just don't know how inconvenient it is for a working family with a few kids. But it is kind of OK if you live with grandpa / grandmom, who will do grocery almost everyday, or if you don't do grocery just eat in restaurants or buy food online.

temp8964··on Executive narcissism affects knowledge transfer among business units
Even it is true, the practical usage of this finding is limited.

First, I don't think you can measure candidates' "narcissism".

Second, if a narcissist executive gets hired, it might because he/she has other advantages over other less-narcissist candidates.
