temp667··on SEC Director of Enforcement resigns after a few days on the job
If they would increase penalities and enforcement around failures to deliver we'd know they actually cared about a functioning market.

Too many attorney's, not enough CPA's / Economists or investors in their staff.

temp667··on CEOs are hugely expensive – why not automate them?
Please don't make up stuff on HN - if you don't have something accurate to share or if it wouldn't support your point please still avoid making things up.

Walmart's profit margin is generally 2-3% and is generally $10 - $20B per year. [1]

And if Walmart were making $100B, the comp for their CEO be far from a major expense to the corp.

temp667··on Telegram: Payments 2.0, Scheduled Voice Chats, New Web Versions
I thought they were focused on convenience etc vs the E2E security model (which makes onboarding devices harder etc). Have they put out a roadmap to E2E everything? That would be somewhat major but surprising given they seem to be doing well with current approach (ease of use / features).
temp667··on CEOs are hugely expensive – why not automate them?
And you have only one CEO - so their comp is expensive, but not hugely expensive relative to total org costs.

Apple has Tim Cook. In terms of investors evaluation of his ability to generate profits - let's say apple is going to do $400B in sales, and you think Tim's approach over time will yield a 3% improved margin. Is he then worth $12B/year? CEO's have enormous influence on a companies direction.

Investors will automate MANY MANY things before they automotive the CEO's job.

Let's be a bit serious. What would make Walmart investors more nervous:

1) Being asked to pay all workers $35/hr, or

2) paying the CEO an extra $1M/year?

1.6M employees * 40K+ pay increase = $64 Billion per YEAR. Let's get a grip on what

temp667··on Apple’s AirDrop leaks users’ PII, and there’s not much they can do about it
What a bogus headline.

If you don't want to try to sync with others publically, don't airdrop in a place where you think someone is waiting to steal your information.

Reality though - your email and phone number is probably already out there.

I'm waiting for the headline - thieves who grab the phone you stick out in front of you while you walk / sit / eat / drink / ride bus / ride train - may get PII. They really can - and likely lots more than whatever apple is leaking.

No excuse for apple's idiocy, just some perspective perhaps. You can easily avoid this - I can't remember last time I used share pane in public.

temp667··on IPv6 Fragmentation Loss
They are not braindead. ICMP used to be a bit broken and folks got sick of ping floods, sweeps, redirect attacks and tunneling hacks etc. Some pretty major places block ICMP as a result to keep their network reasoning and security analysis simpler.
temp667··on IPv6 Fragmentation Loss
Some people don't want to deal with ping floods, sweeps, ICMP tunneling issued and the whole ICMP redirect attacks?
temp667··on Minio Changes License to AGPL
Correct - you would need to open source your entire app (or at least a strong arguement can be made that you must do so).

"The primary risk presented by AGPL is that any product or service that depends on AGPL-licensed code, or includes anything copied or derived from AGPL-licensed code, may be subject to the virality of the AGPL license. "

Almost all larger places have very strict bans on evening touching AGPL -

https://opensource.google/docs/using/agpl-policy/

The contributors can of course license commercially, so this has made it a popular sort of "shared source" type license - you can look at the code, but can't use it in your own projects unless they are open source too or pay for the commercial license.

temp667··on Biden eyeing tax rate as high as 43.4% in next economic package
Many people have to pay tax on their income before they use it too. Why should the person sitting on a fat investment portfolio not have to?

Can I borrow against these unrealized gains you say make no sense to tax and still spend the money, but perhaps never pay taxes on the gains ever??

If instead of taking income I take a carried interest in my portfolio can I defer taxes - maybe forever?

By the way, all these are the loopholes that are CURRENTLY being used by the well off to avoid paying taxes.

Seriously - why do you think portfolio lines of credit are so popular?

temp667··on Biden eyeing tax rate as high as 43.4% in next economic package
I can speak to this - a long time coming.

A HUGE amount of complexity in tax code, tax preparation, and tax audit is the characterization of earnings.

Pop quiz, if you are going to be bringing in $100M, do you want to pay 40% tax or 15% tax? Long term capital gains = 15%. So a lot of hoop jumping to turn things into capital gains, then long term capital gains. What a pain.

Just for simplicyt I wish they would say, for everyone making more than $150K/year (300K married) investment income is taxed as any other type of income.

Cut overall rates if needed if you want it revenue neutral.

The next step is to tax unrealized gains. I know, lots of hand wringing, but if you can defer gains until death (not too hard) you can come out golden in terms of family wealth (lots of like kind property exchanges etc).

temp667··on Tracking the WhatsApp habits of random smartphones
Um, my wife and I use the same code for all our devices - if your partner is developing this level of paranoia aren't there easier approaches to this question? Or maybe setup a separate whatsapp account to use for cheating if you are big into that so folks can't track you while you cheat?
temp667··on Ubuntu 21.04
I know the Fedora Council has really come out against Stallman and has announced a number of steps Fedora will be taking against Stallman and FSF. This was in connection with an RMS open letter. You can read the open letter here:

"Richard M. Stallman, frequently known as RMS, has been a dangerous force in the free software community for a long time. He has shown himself to be misogynist, ableist, and transphobic, among other serious accusations of impropriety." - https://rms-open-letter.github.io/

Because of his history of abuse (per Fedora) Fedora will not attend any FSF events, will not attend any event Stallman attends and will not attend any events by any Organization Stallman is connected with.

Has ubuntu taken a similar stance? I couldn't find a similar Ubuntu open letter on this.

temp667··on Tracking the WhatsApp habits of random smartphones
" understand pretty much everything of a person, or a group."

How does this work - does it leak status or location, messages, contact lists etc? We have a number of folks who are absolutely freaking out over how folks are being killed because of this - can someone walk us through how it leaks all this info?

A quick note that I make my entire calendar public in terms of available times so that folks can schedule their time with me.

temp667··on Tracking the WhatsApp habits of random smartphones
I can't help but wondering how many lives WhatsApp has helped.

And it is definitely NOT an SMS client. The entire reason it has become so popular is that it does not use SMS. Before WhatsApp - the govt in these countries - supposedly looking out for the common good - allowed telecom carriers (usually giant oligarchs) to charge OBSENE per msg rates.

temp667··on SmartFarm device to harvest air moisture for self-sustaining urban farming
They do have uses is marketing. Vodka has a moisture harvested vodka "made with fog". It goes for 125 per bottle and is usually sold out as far as I can see.

That's a $100 premium which values the "fog" water at roughly $500 / gallon. So if you have a market willing to pay $500 / gallon extra for water harvested from the air this business might work. Not sure how many of those there are.

temp667··on TSMC sees chip shortage lasting into 2022
China def is stockpiling more chips I think. The Huawei situation really brought home to china how the US or others could basically try and cut them off and they are doing a lot of things to reduce that potentially impact (all out on chip mfg, chip orders etc) so having stock may be of benefit to them in that environment.
temp667··on Linus Torvalds says GPL v3 violates everything that GPLv2 stood for (2014)
Thank goodness the FSF basically failed.

Linus - FSF is "filled with crazy bigoted people"

Then the guy keeps on going on how "we" can get Linus to stop. Who is this "We" attacking linus?

temp667··on Update on beta testing payments in Signal
That's not how this works at all.

These single member LLC's are considered disregarded entities in most cases. Many nonprofits use LLC's to own property, do app development etc for liability reasons. That doesn't obviate their need to act in a manner consistent with their parent entities objectives and public purpose.

temp667··on Update on beta testing payments in Signal
The Signal Foundation is a nonprofit.

It would be an enormous conflict of interest if Moxie had a financial stake in MobileCoin, and then drove signal to adopt this random crap coin.

These guys keep on claiming just to be technical advisors with no financial interest or benefit from mobilecoin. BS.

Let's get some auditors into Moxies / Signal Foundation stuff, figure out how this decision was made, if signal foundation received fair value for pushing their users this way etc etc.

I got voted down before for saying this, but will keep on saying it. You can't use a charity and then leverage that charitys assets to enrich yourself outside of the charity.

What's interesting is despite all the claims of "trust" and "security" vs using google etc these guys turn out to be what appears to be scammers.

I've uninstalled signal - you should too.

temp667··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
That's not been the messaging.

Note that other vaccine's that prevent infection also reduce your risk of spreading the disease (measles etc).

So the fact that COVID spreads (not just in rare cases, but enough we all have to remain masked AND socially distant even if vaccinated) is a CRAZY big difference here.

The messaging has been clear - even if vaccinated you MUST wear masks and socially distance - which shows how different this is then other viruses. Given that, it's understandable that people are a bit more meh on the vaccines - because you can still spread it to others either way.

I do wonder about the experts messaging at times. Initially I thought airbone virus, began wearing my leftover N95's from wildfire season. Then they said those don't stop this airborne virus and to take them off. Then they said put them back on. and on it goes.

temp667··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
This is absolute and total BS. 2% death rate? Who comes up with this total garbage?

You have 100M infected in US as the estimate. A 2% death rate is 2M deaths from COVID alone. I've not seen anything like that as credible death rates - it's at least half if not a quarter of this rate - more like 0.5% or less. Do the same thing in countries with 70% infected rates - if fatality was really 2%+ death counts would be insane.

You really start to understand how people start to doubt the crap COVID "experts" put out when basic math shows it is garbage.

temp667··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
We have been told we have to wear masks and socially distance with or without vaccine, so you can ABSOLUTELY still spread it even if fully vaccinated. Please follow the health guidelines and do not spread disinformation.
temp667··on Nvidia Unveils Grace: A High-Performance Arm CPU for Use in Big AI Systems
The CPU cores are probably not that interesting, it's going to be the GPU and interlink stuff (pretty impressive if true) that's going to drive this?
temp667··on Nvidia Unveils Grace: A High-Performance Arm CPU for Use in Big AI Systems
I know we are going to hear from the Apple haters soon or those that don't like what apple is doing (modular upgradeable systems going away) BUT it seems like Apple is moving in a similar direction as nvidia.

Apple is also I think going to soldered on / close in RAM. Nvidia looks to be doing this two CPU / GPU / Ram all close together and it doesn't look like any upgrade options. Some thinking was that Apple was continuing to increase durability / reliability etc with their RAM move.

Does anyone know requirements for the LPDDR5X type of ram mentioned here. Does this require soldering things (you obviously get lots more control if you spec chips yourself and solder on)?

temp667··on Microsoft buys Nuance for nearly $20B
I'm an apple buyer. Siri is terrible. Google assistant is pretty impressive. I would switch BUT - google's integration / support for things like work calendars is so terrible, and their response to consumer / user input so bad (ie, ignored despite #1 request for years and years) that I'm like most Apple users.

Apple (and Amazon) get many things right, and actually seem to pay a tiny bit of attention to user needs. So it's really not worth playing with the google stuff because you end up in these weird nonsensical hells - everything is amazing, and then they just drop the ball in a key corner.

For example, my google work calendar is EASY to integrate with Alexa along with my personal calendar. Fantastic, what's my schedule today works great. Google - falls flat on its' face for this, despite being a paying customer of their Gsuite. Their approach is just full of excuses here, and ignores that this desired interaction works well on their COMPETITORS devices but not theirs.

Just one (of many) examples. They have some sort of eventually consistent backend more often for stuff so you also get weird states that you can't delete things, changes take longer to "flow through" etc.

temp667··on Donation page "not compliant with Google Play Policies"
No, that would be outside of TOS because it is messaging which would lead to a non Google Play billing payment flow.

"may not lead users to a payment method other than Google Play's billing system. This prohibition includes, but is not limited to, leading users to other payment methods via: .... [lots edited out] links, messaging, advertisements or other calls to action".

The TOS specifically notes that things like tax deductible donations, payments for gambling, and physical services such as cruises and airfare ARE permitted to link outside of google play because google does not want to deal with those through Play in most cases. I think you are actually banned from using Google for those. So the key is a tax deductible donation - and a payment, even voluntary, to an individual in the US at least is not a tax deductible donation in almost all cases.

My sense is google is merchant of record, and can't control the delivery of those other types of services (cruises, airfare, wire transfers, gambling etc) and the related liabilities the way it can with digital stuff and apps - so Lyft would be allowed to bill directly and if a lyft driver assaults you and sues, google was not seller or payment handler.

temp667··on Donation page "not compliant with Google Play Policies"
The person is complaining about google's policies.

Google's policies follow this accepted language. You are allowed to have donate now buttons to accept donations on or even off platform if you are a charity.

If you want to make up your own words, and then be outraged that google and others don't agree with you - fine. We are living in alternative facts / outrage world these days. But if someone calls you out on this - and points out that plenty of scammers also try to thread this needle in lots of ways, maybe worth a minute of real life reflection.

temp667··on Donation page "not compliant with Google Play Policies"
Cool - I will start deducting the tips and gifts I give my friend and family on my taxes!! Can you provide your name and address so I can cite your views when the IRS comes knocking?

So we are 100% clear, donations are things given to charities. Gifts and tips are generally given to individuals. In a lot of contexts, including with google, there is a major difference, and folks pretending to be charities to use the donation exceptions are basically scammers (in google's eyes). Not sure I disagree either.

temp667··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
You see this in a lot of industries that are unionized, if you move across the country or have a life change and are in a unionized environment you can be screwed by a) losing seniority and b) comp can drop.

Had a friend who was a pilot. Personal situation - moved, wanted to live in base rather than deadhead yadda yadda - you start off at ground zero at the new airline - literally next to guys with no time on type (and you could have thousands of hours on type - which is years of work).

temp667··on Spotify continues to remove Joe Rogan episodes
What is Spectrum ERG? Most corps do follow guidance from legal / HR etc to a degree - it's weird if that was being ignored.
