tellarin··on Path Guide: A New Approach to Indoor Navigation
This is strange. There should be no restrictions for Germany. We'll check that.
tellarin··on What made Xerox PARC special? Who else today is like them?
The Shenzhen model is really nothing anywhere close to Xerox PARC. If any place gets close, I'd say it's Microsoft Research.

But even that has changed a lot in the last few years.

Disclaimer: I work there.

tellarin··on Who will remember you in 100 years?
In all seriousness,

Who cares? I don't.

It's like discussing life after death. I'm fine with just this one.

tellarin··on New Zealand Court Rules Kim Dotcom Can Be Extradited to U.S
I agree that the US prison system has many human rights issues, but Kim's extradition was approved due to the fraud and racketeering charges, not due to the copyright infringement accusations.

No idea how it works if he's extradited and the US tries to prosecute him for the copyright infringement cases though.

tellarin··on What does it take to be a good programmer?
I call that distinction the difference between an elegant and a clever solution. Clever being what you mention.

If the programmer can't tell the difference when implementing, then go for a simpler version, as you suggest.

- Elegant: Nice, clean, well thought out.

- Clever: Hackish, terse, too hard to understand for whatever benefit it brings.

tellarin··on Ask HN: Did knowing or learning a not-so-famous natural language benefit you?
No no no. Finish is a machine gun language. And a broken one at that. Everything sounds like ratatata ta ta. PS: Too long working for Nokia, I guess. ;)
tellarin··on Ask HN: Did knowing or learning a not-so-famous natural language benefit you?
Not quite true. If I recall correctly, each country picks a language and Ireland didn't choose English.
tellarin··on Astronauts enter China's space station [video]
Research (especially pure research) and innovation are many times initially incompatible with rational economic behaviour.
tellarin··on Now it’s exploding Samsung washing machines
If this happens to washing machines, I guess it either was a pretty good idea for them to sell their Techwin subsidiary a couple years ago, or they miss working in that field. :)
tellarin··on With the iPhone 7, Apple Changed the Camera Industry Forever
Dual-lens is not even new on phones too.

And of course others valued having a computer on their pocket, Nokia was one of the first smartphone manufacturers after all. Not to say they didn't both screwed up and underestimated the iPhone.

The whole article reads very fanboy-ish.

tellarin··on Show HN: Carbide – A New Programming Environment
I recognise the feeling.

I have to say that there are also some nice memories from that time mixed in too. At least in my case. :)

BTW, there were also Carbide.j and Carbide.ui

tellarin··on Show HN: Carbide – A New Programming Environment
There was. Basically dead for a while.

That Carbide was exactly what I thought of when I read the tile. Many mixed memories from my kind-of-later Nokia days. ;)

Kudos to the team behind the current one though. Looks great so far!

PS: Not only .c++, but also .j and a theme editor, Carbide.ui

tellarin··on Smallest hard disk to date writes information atom by atom
That's hard, but not a disk. ;)
tellarin··on EU Referendum Results
I'm on my phone now, so I can't find a link. But yes, some politicians in Scotland have already said they'd have another referendum to leave the UK if it leaves the EU.

I wonder what will happen in Northern Ireland. My understanding is that it will be split in half in terms of voting leave/remain.

tellarin··on Sweden asks to meet Julian Assange inside Ecuador embassy
Finally! Hope this finally moves ahead. The guys has been stuck there in 'house arrest' for years.
tellarin··on Clash of Clans Creator Supercell Sold to Chinese Tencent for 6,4B Euro
US$ 6.4B, not Euro.
tellarin··on China's Tencent buys a majority stake in Finnish Supercell
I've just read elsewhere that they paid US$ 8.6B for it. http://www.wsj.com/articles/tencent-agrees-to-acquire-clash-...

I'm quite curious now to see how this moves forward. China is a very different market from the "West".

tellarin··on End to Democratic Primary:Anonymous Super-Delegates Declare Winner Through Media
If this is indeed the case, I really hope it backfires. That would be very interesting to see.
tellarin··on How Dirty Is Your Air?
Unfortunately all the ones I've seen give wildly inaccurate readings.

Living in China I've measured particle count way too many times with different sensors. :)

tellarin··on World's longest and deepest rail tunnel to open in Switzerland
"... longest and deepest rail tunnel ..." and "... delivered on time and within budget ..."

Only in Switzerland, I guess. :)

I wish there were better write ups of how the planning for this came together and what differs from other somewhat similar huge projects.

tellarin··on China’s scary lesson to the world: Censoring the Internet works
Nitpicking, but Mandarin Chinese is one of the official languages in Singapore (with English, Tamil, and Malay).

Also, there is an immense Chinese diaspora throughout the world (especially in neighbouring countries), of which many became multilingual and have access to other media and can still communicate back.

tellarin··on UC Davis chancellor apologizes for Internet scrubbing controversy
Too little, too late.
tellarin··on UC Davis Wondered If $175,000 Would Make the Internet Go Away. Conclusion: No
Or, as I heard earlier today...

Trying to dupe the Internet: 175k

Watching it backfire: priceless.

:)

tellarin··on UC Davis Wondered If $175,000 Would Make the Internet Go Away. Conclusion: No
I guess they never heard of the Streissand effect, huh?
tellarin··on What My PhD Was Like
I'm at MSR in China and I have to say that, even though there are a few researchers without PhDs here, they are not that many.

And having a PhD and a body of work does help a lot in the interview cycles.

tellarin··on Microsoft Acquires Xamarin
Interesting, as no Nokia patents were bought by Microsoft.

MS licensed their patents, but the current profitable Nokia kept them and has a unit dedicated to research and IP.

One can argue that the licensing was cheap, but cross-licensing agreements between companies is very common.

tellarin··on Xiaoice, a chatbot that may be the largest Turing test in history
There is also a Korean version, but I forgot its name.
tellarin··on Beijing smog ‘red alert’ issued
Greenpeace actually said that "The Chinese government’s 'war on pollution' has led to a significant improvement in air quality" [1]. Which is actually true. Believe it or not.

tellarin··on Beijing smog ‘red alert’ issued
130 - 170 AQI is kind of typical. With <50 levels sprinkled throughout the year.

A couple dozen days a year it gets really bad, worse than this current streak.

tellarin··on Beijing smog ‘red alert’ issued
First of all, welcome to the Jing!

Not sure what Leipzig was like in 86, but if you don't find it objectionable here this week, man, you have iron lungs and a high tolerance for smoke-smelling dusty stuff. :)

On a serious note, the news cycle is over hyping it. But there are some pretty bad days. And this week isn't even close to the worst it has been in Beijing a couple years ago.

PS: 4th year here.
