- I forgot who first said this.
In the past I've had goals, I "try to make it work" as you say. How do you not worry about the thing that you are trying to make it work?

Thank you for writing about your perspective. I've heard similar suggestions before, but never really focused/internalized it.
There is no such thing as not worshipping.
Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And an outstanding reason for choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship – be it J.C. Or Allah, be it Yahweh or the Wiccan mothergoddess or the Four Noble Truths or some infrangible set of ethical principles –
is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive.
If you worship money and things – if they are where you tap real meaning in life – then you will never have enough. Never feel you have enough. It's the truth. Worship your own body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly, and when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally plant you. On one level we all know this stuff already – it's been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, bromides, epigrams, parables: the skeleton of every great story. Worship your intellect, being seen as smart – you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. And so on.

In some (but not all) circumstances, I've been told to "f!ck off" and "suck a c!ck" becaue they want money, presumably for drugs/alcohol/etc.
Again this is my experience. Your mileage may vary.
I assume you are from a tech background? Break networking down to baby steps. I was always told to go "three deep" on a question.
Ex.
Me: Hey, how are you? What projects are you working on now? Person: Hey, I'm alright. I'm working on this widget Me: Cool. Why did you chose to work on this widget? Person: Because I want to learn more about squelch Me: I don't know much about squelch; what have you learned? ...
This helps avoid shallow talk, and establishes that you are a functional person who is interested in them. (Most). People love to talk about themselves.
Now that you've established yourself, you can start talking about what you want, whether it be you're looking for clients, looking for a second opinion on xyz, etc.

Community college, especially in larger cities, definitely is underrated.
edit: redundent wording.
Anecdotally, I've noticed some of this as well. When I took a leave-of-absence from my degree, some college students flat-out ignored me when I mentioned it. I find it ironic that institutions who are supposed to broaden peoples' minds still gravitate towards their own tribes/cliques.

Would they get in trouble for calling the place a Drug Store even though they do not sell prescription medicine?
